WESTERN WEATHER SUMMARY Barometric pressure continues high over the far western United States with highest pressure centered over the Great Basin Region. Fair weather prevails along the Pacific Coast. A large complex low pressure system covers the Gulf of Alaska. NATIONAL WEATHER SUMMARY Raw wintry weather continues to plague the area from the Great Lakes to New England. Snow is piling up a foot or more over northern Maine where heavy snow warnings remain in effect tonight.

At 7 p.m. E.S.T. Houlton, Maine, measured 17 inches of snow on the ground 5 Inches of which had fallen during the previous six hours. Caribou reported 6 inches of new snow making a total of 15 inches, and Millinocket received 3 inches in six hours with a 14 inch blanket on the ground. Snow has diminshed over the gale battered northern Great Lakes and further improvement is expected, but an exception to this has been Hougton in Upper Michigan where two inches of additional snow fell during the with 20 inches on the ground at 7 p.m.

E.S.T. Bitter cold has become entrenched over much of the Midwest in the wake of the storm. Subzero cold is expected to grip the Dakotas Minnesota and Northeast Montana. The only substantial rains tonight are falling in Maine just to the South of the snow belt. Portland has been soaked by more than an inch and a quarter (1.35) since this morning.

A few showers are also occurring along the South Atlantic coast and in western Washington. Skies are mostly clear from the southwestern desert region to the Ohio Valley and Southern Appalachians. Only the Florida Peninsula remains in warm tropical air tonight. Maximum temperatures around the nation this afternoon ranged from 7 at Glasgow Montana to 84 at Clewiston Florida. Foster, 69, former 1st Division commander of the California National Guard Reserve was found dead Saturday in a field near his Palos Verdes Estates home after apparently taking his own life. Police said Foster, of 952 Via Rincon Lane, apparently shot himself in the head with a pistol after writing a note describing financial difficulties. Foster was a veteran of both world wars.
