OBITUARIES ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2008 C4 On the web New Mexico news at ABQjournal.com Francis Hail Van Buskirk Karen Gottstein Bataan Survivor One of Last in N.M. Columnist Met the Challenge held at 10:30 a da my. at SF at iursrt- Unitarian Church, 3701 Carlisle NE. Born in San Francisco, Gottstein grew up in GOTTSTEIN: the city's Wrote under Haight-Ash- bury district pen name Karen Stone and attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, said her brother, Adam Gottstein. "Karen was among the first 'ecologists' and, frustrated with the lack of courses being offered, she developed her own environmental studies program," he wrote to the Journal.

"As a longstanding member of the Sierra Club, this was just the beginning of a life of social justice causes that she took up and moved forward." Gottstein became an avid backpacker, taking many trips to the Sierra-Nevada range and enjoyed the outings the Journal in one of her first columns, pointing out that she could not get her wheelchair through the revolving door at the main lobby." She pointed out that an adjoining door was of no use either, because a person in a wheelchair couldn't hold it open to enter, Harmon said. "Within days, the publisher had an automatic door opener installed for his feisty columnist and everyone else arriving by chair," Harmon said. "Karen had a will to live that was much stronger than her frail body," Harmon said. "She passionately wanted to live her life to the fullest and in spite of great obstacles, she did." Gottstein's columns were eventually converted into chapter form. Her book "Awakening to Disability: Nothing About Us Without Us" (Volcano Press), was published by her mother, Ruth.

Karen Gottstein is survived by her mother, Ruth, and her two brothers, Dan and Adam. camps. "I really can't think of a Bataan veteran that didn't buckle down and do what for three years we said we wanted to do settle down, get married, raise a family and educate our kids," Van Buskirk said in a 1985 interview with The New Mexican. After his return to New Mexico after the war, Van Buskirk married and had five children. He worked in construction until retiring in 1984.

Van Buskirk was born April 1, 1921, on a ranch near Texico on the Texas-New Mexico state line. He graduated in 1939 from Santa Fe High School. He was 19 when he joined the predecessor of the New Mexico National Guard and was sent to the Philippines with the 200th Coast Artillery. Van Buskirk once said that he was assigned to cook at some of the four squalid prison camps where he was held, but there wasn't enough food. "I was feeding 1,300 skeletons a day," he said.

The piece had a great following among readers, said former Journal Trends editor Tom Harmon, who edited the work.

Various estimates put the number of New Mexico survivors of Bataan at a few dozen. Some 70,000 American and Filipino troops who surrendered on the Bataan Peninsula in the Philippines in April 1942 were forced to march 65 miles without food or water to Japanese prison camps. Those who collapsed along the way were shot or bayoneted. About 1,800 captives were from New Mexico; fewer than 900 survived the march or years in prison Spanish Fruit Avenue Baptist Church at 812 Fruit Avenue NW at 2:00 p.m. on February 14, 2008.
