Chapter 1: The Cast of A Dark Path Walked

Chapter Text

  1. Juliana: The Main Protagonist of the Alternate Universe and student of Naranja Academy. She is chosen for the joint Kitakami trip by lottery and her trip will become an adventure that will forge a new friendship and cause a fellow student to make dire choices.
  1. Kieran: A First year student of Blueberry Academy and Carmine's younger brother. He is shy and quiet, but over his time he grows confident and learns to be brave. However, this growth comes at the price of being strained from his sister. He is learning how to make masks from his Grandpa
  1. Carmine: A third year student of Blueberry Academy and Kieran's Older brother. She is less than welcoming to Juliana and is brash and stubborn. Soon, the stubbornness turns to pride and she begins to make wrong decisions and even befriends three Loyal Pokémon.
  1. Lacey: A second year student of Blueberry Academy and a member of the BB League Elite Four, who specializes in Fairy types. She takes Kieran in as her trainee after Carmine's dark change and swears to help him see some sense to his sister. She is Driftveil City Gym Leader Clay's daughter.
  1. Crispin: A First year student of Blueberry Academy and a member of the BB League Elite Four who specializes in Fire Types. While he is a good cook, he is a bit of an airhead, which is why he is unaware of Carmine's Dark Path and Kieran's worries. He is classmates with Kieran.
  1. Drayton: A second year student of Blueberry Academy and BB League Champion-turned-BB League Elite Four, who specializes in Dragon Types. He may be intelligent, but he is lazy and laid-back, which is why he had to repeat a year three times. He has a brotherly bond with Kieran and Carmine, which is why he is dedicated to helping talk some sense into Carmine... sort of. He is Opelucid City Gym Leader Drayton's grandson.
  1. Amarys: A student of Blueberry Academy (we don't know what year) and a Member of the BB League Elite Four who specializes in Steel Types. She is best friends with Carmine and knows Kieran due to being friends with his sister. Amarys is most affected by Carmine's change, but she hides it with her stoic expressions.
  1. Florian: A young man with a Terapagos. He befriends Carmine when she is at her lowest and follows her dark path of revenge on Juliana. He is a strong obstacle for Juliana. Kieran and the BB League Elite Four.
  1. Gladys (Original Character): A first year student of Blueberry Academy from Galar. She used to be a BB League Elite Four, but lost her position. She is a Grass expert. She comes from Turffield so she can train to be strong and be a dependent Gym Trainer for Milo. She is classmates and good friends with Kieran while she barely interacted with Carmine. She is also classmates with Crispin.
  1. Ogerpon: A Grass type Legendary Pokémon who can use four masks. In Mossui Town's eyes, a menacing ogre that spread fear towards the village, in Kieran's eyes, a brave creature that valiantly took down three Pokémon. In reality, Ogerpon is a lonely Pokémon who is hiding in isolation after the incident that killed her friend and ostracized her from the village.
  1. The Loyal Three: A trio consisting of Okidogi, Munkidori and Fezandipiti. In the eyes of the villagers, these three are heroes who sacrificed themselves to repel a fearsome ogre, but in reality, they are greedy Pokémon who stole Ogerpon's masks and they paid the price. After their defeat upon resurrection, Carmine caught her and they became friends with her for her insanity.
  1. Terapagos: The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero and a Pokémon under the ownership of Florian. He, alongside Florian, met Carmine and they decide to help her walk her path of darkness.
  1. Pecharunt: A mysterious Pokémon mysteriously found in Peachy's. Pecharunt was originally the child of an elderly couple, Pecharunt ended up stranded in Kitakami when it and the Loyal Three stole Ogerpon's masks and ended up losing to Ogerpon. Years later, when it was time for Carmine to leave, Pecharunt sensed Carmine's anger and flew to her house. It decided to be her Pokémon in exchange for strenght. Now, alongside Sinistcha, Carmine sees Pecharunt and the Loyal Three as her only friends, isolating herself from even her own brother.

Chapter Text

It has been three months ever since Juliana moved from Galar to Paldea. She barely made herself at home in Cabo Poco when she decided to enroll in Naranja Academy. Not only that, Director Clavell made a visit to her house to tell her that her enrollment has been accepted. Along the journey to her new school, she met her neighbor and classmate, Nemona, who loves to battle and the two became rivals when Juliana picked Fuecoco and Nemona chose Quaxly. The newly-moved girl then met a mysterious creature called Koraidon/Miraidon after she fell off Poco Path and survived thanks to her Rotom Phone being used as a parachute, they escaped a pack of Houndour and Houndoom and met their Houndoom leader, who proved to be way too strong to Juliana and Fuecoco and Koraidon/Miraidon rescued her.

On her way to the Poco Lighthouse, she and Nemona met a young man named Arven, who is not only also a student of the same Academy she enrolled, he is also the son of the esteemed Professor Sada. After a beautiful view from the Lighthouse and an extremely long trip through Los Platos and South Province due to her not having a Cyclizar, Juliana finally arrives in Mesagoza. Before she could enter Naranja Academy, she saved a girl with an Eevee bag named Penny from some trouble making students who call themselves Team Star and she also received a Tera Orb from Nemona during the confrontation.

Upon entering the esteemed Naranja Academy, not only could she see how big and marvelous the place is, she also met Jacq, her homeroom teacher and the creator of the Paldean Pokédex, got some requests to defeat the eight gym leaders and Pokémon League from Nemona, find Five mysterious herbs called Herba Mystica from Arven and put an end to Team Star’s trouble making behavior from a mysterious entity called Cassiopeia for her Treasure Hunt.

Juliana also learned that Koraidon can help her by being a ride Pokémon like Cyclizar and that made it easier for her to travel. During her Treasure Hunt, not only did she grow stronger, she also helped Nemona complete her goal of finding the perfect rival for her which turned out to be Juliana herself, used the Herba Mystica to not only restore Koraidons ability to travel better like climbing, gliding and swimming, but also cure Arven’s partner Mabostiff, who got badly injured during an expedition in Area Zero, and proved to Team Star and their leader, Cassopeia, aka Penny, that there is no need to be afraid in going back to school and that hurting others is not the right thing to do. Juliana also learned of Team Star’s tragic backstory of them being bullied by other students and retaliating against them.

After that ordeal is done, Juliana was about to rest back at Naranja Academy when she got a call from Arven to meet him at Zero Gate at the Great Crater of Paldea, which is forbidden entry due to how dangerous it is since the Quaking Earth Titan was a Great Tusk that escaped from the even dangerous Area Zero. She met him, Nemona and Penny at the entrance and they got the elevator to the lift to Area Zero working thanks to Penny’s hacking skills.

It took them a bit longer to enter since Koraidon did not want to go there due to some trauma, but the four students helped out. As soon as they entered, Koraidon returned to its Pokéball because of fear, which led the four of them to find Professor Sada, who is trapped in the Zero Lab, by foot. Along the way, they unlocked all four locks in the research stations blocking the entrance to Zero Lab, fighting a Glimmora outside the first station, which Nemona recognizes as a Pokémon Geeta, La Primera, owns, a Scream Tail, which Penny confused for a Jigglypuff, and another Great Tusk. At the same time, the behavior of Professor Sada is acting stranger and stranger.

Upon reaching the Zero Lab, they confront another Koraidon that sent Juliana’s Koraidon away after a turf war and an army of ancient looking Pokémon similar to Misdreavus and Amoongus. Nemona, Penny and Arven stayed behind to hold the reinforcements while Juliana entered the Zero Lab.

As she explores the Zero Lab, she sees Professor Sada, but it is an AI made to look and act like Professor Sada because the real Professor Sada passed away protecting Juliana’s Koraidon from the aggressive Koraidon. The AI takes Juliana to the time machine and begs for her to stop the original Professor’s wishes to continue the Time Machine. As she tries to fulfill the AI’s wish, it challenges her to a battle with a team of ancient looking Pokémon. When Nemona, Arven and Penny arrive to help Juliana, the AI activates the Time Machine’s Paradise Protection Protocol to lock all Pokémon except those on the ownership of Professor.

Just when all hope is lost when the AI sends out the aggressive Koraidon, Juliana uses the Koraidon she has been taking care of. Her kindness and devotion helped Koraidon regain its true strength and with everyone’s cheers, Koraidon defeated its aggressive counterpart.

Victory was bittersweet. Paldea was saved, but Arven learned the truth of his mother from an AI who was replicating her appearance and behavior. And not only that, AI Sada decided to use the time machine to go to the ancient past to discover her dream and freedom.

It has been three months ever since the start of the Treasure Hunt. Juliana had a long schedule, doing the Gym Inspections in Geeta’s stead, participating in the Academy Ace tournament founded by Nemona, completing her Pokédex and helping Professor Jacq on his research with Tera Raids.

Her Rotom Phone Rang when she had caught a mysterious ancient Suicune called Walking Wake.

“Hello?” She answered the call.

“Hello, Juliana, my girl!” Professor Jacq said with his useful cheerful tone.

“Hello, Professor Jacq.” The brown haired girl smiled. “Did you need something for your research?”

“Actually, I called you for something else.” Professor Jacq answered. “Remember when you signed up for a lottery for an upcoming school trip?”

“Yes. I did.” Juliana nodded, playing with her braid. “What happened?”

“We just got the results in just a day and you are one of four students to be chosen for the trip!” The Professor said with a happier tone.

“Really?!” Juliana beamed in joy. “I’m chosen! I’m so happy!”

“No need to worry about asking permission.” Jacq said. “Your mother gave us the good to go. Why don’t you meet me and a special someone at the Academy’s Entrance?”

“I will.” Juliana smiled. “See you there.”

As she hung up the call, she couldn’t help herself when she jumped in joy. It was the first time she had a trip ever since moving out from Galar. She ran towards Skeledirge, Koraidon and the rest of her Pokémon.

“Koraidon, Skeledirge, Tinkaton, Kilowatrel, Arboliva, Armarouge, Annihalape!” She cheered. “We are chosen for the trip! We’re going to make so many friends! People and Pokémon alike!”

Her Pokémon made a variety of noises in celebration, the loudest being Skeledirge and Koraidon.

“Let’s go back to Naranja Academy! Professor Jacq is waiting for us!” She said as she recalled her Pokémon except for Koraidon.

After she made some preparations, Juliana entered Naranja Academy, where at the entrance hall, a woman with dark blond hair was waiting for her. The woman turned around as Juliana approached her.

“Ah. Hello, you must be Juliana, right?” The woman greeted the girl. “One of four students in Naranja Academy chosen by lottery?”

“Yes, ma’am.” Juliana nodded. “I am Juliana.”

“Nice to meet you, sweet Juliana.” The woman smiled. “Allow me to introduce myself. I am Briar, and I will be your guide for our field trip to Kitakami. I am also a teacher at Blueberry Academy, which is located in Unova.”

“Blueberry Academy, such a cool name!” Juliana got more excited to hear of Blueberry Academy.

“I’m happy to hear that you love the small details I gave to our school.” Briar said with joy in her voice. “I am also here for another reason… Have you heard of Area Zero?”

“Yes.” Juliana nodded. “I went there as part of my Treasure Hunt.”

“I see.” Briar hummed. “Apparently, I am here to request access to Area Zero after hearing of a mysterious Pokémon called Terapagos. I even got the original note about Terapagos from Heath, the founder of the Scarlet Book, who is my ancestor. Anyway, let us change the topic back to the field trip. Did you make some preparations for our trip to Kitakami?”

“Of course, ma’am.” Juliana nodded.

Jacq and three other students, a small boy wearing a red cap, a taller boy and a girl, arrive.

“Apologies for my lateness, Miss Briar.” Jacq said. “I was making some updates on the Pokédex app since Kitakami will have different Pokémon.”

“My, you are very well-prepared, Mister Jacq.” Briar mused.

“Juliana, would you allow me to update the Pokédex App on your Rotom Phone?” Jacq turned to Juliana.

“Of course, Professor Jacq!” Juliana agreed.

After Jacq upgraded Juliana’s Pokédex to add the Kitakami Pokédex, Briar, Juliana and the other three students headed off for a long plane flight and bus ride to Kitakami Road in the Kitakami region. As they took a rest at the bus stop, the red cap student started feeling motion sick and Briar requested Juliana to find some help at the nearby town’s community center. Juliana agreed out of kindness and selflessness, and headed off to the nearby Mossui Town.

Juliana was intrigued by the variety of Pokémon not seen in Paldea, Yanma, Poochyena, Volbeat, Johtoian Wooper, Corphish and Sewaddle. She stopped herself from being distracted as she arrived at Mossui Town and saw a pair of siblings, an older sister and a younger brother, talking to each other in front of the community center.

Are those two kids residents of Mossui Town? ” Juliana thought to herself. “ Maybe they can help tend to Josue .”

The younger brother saw Juliana and turned to his sister.

“Sis! Look!” He said. “There’s another one!”

The Older sister smiled to herself and ran off towards Juliana with her younger brother following her and hiding behind her back.

“Hello.” The Older sister greeted Juliana by waving. “I see that you do not belong here in Kitakami. Who might you be?”

“Hello.” Juliana smiled, unaware that the kindness the older sister has is a facade. “I’m Juliana. I study at Naranja Academy in Paldea and I need your help.”

The younger brother leaned sideways a bit from behind his sister and looked at Juliana in awe.

“No way…” He muttered. “So cool…”

“Hush, Kieran.” The older sister turned to her younger brother, Kieran, before facing Juliana. “Anyway, Juliana, my name is Carmine and I am afraid I cannot let you pass to Mossui Town. Not unless you battle me.”

“Hold on.” Juliana raised her hands. “I actually need help.”

“She’s right, Sis.” Kieran said. “We can’t just battle strangers out of nowhere.”

“Kiki… I said-” Carmine growled before she was interrupted by Juliana.

“One of my classmates fell ill after a long flight and bus ride and I need to find someone who can help me out by tending to him.” Juliana said.

“N-no way!” Kieran shook his head. “Th-this is a very serious matter! I’ll go get the caretaker so he can help!”

As Kieran runs off to get some help, Carmine turns to him.

“Kiki, what are you-?!” Carmine tried to call out to her brother, but he was far off, so she turned to Juliana. “Well, it seems that you managed to speak some sense to my younger brother, but unfortunately, you will not fool me.”

“This isn’t a joke!” Juliana tried to calm Carmine down.

“I don’t care what you say. We are going to battle.” Carmine growled as she took a Pokéball and sent out Poochyena.

Juliana sighed as she had no choice as she sent out Annihalape.

It didn’t take some effort for Juliana since she just used Annihalape to defeat Carmine’s Poochyena, Vulpix and Poltchageist.

“I cannot believe it!” Carmine growled as she grabbed the strands on her hair. “There is no way you should have been able to beat me!” She takes a deep breath and calms down. “Alright… I guess you pass… barely. I’ll let you into town. But only if you become one of my grunts and do every little thing I-”

Just as Carmine was about to make Juliana into her “grunt”, Kieran and an old man come out of the community center.

“Oi!” The man called out to Carmine. “What are you doing, causing a ruckus out here?!”

“Tch… here comes trouble.” Carmine hissed before running off.

“Sis! Wait up!” Kieran called out to her to no avail. He let out a sigh. “I am so sorry… Sis can be… stubborn.”

“It’s ok.” Juliana smiled. “I dealt with worse.”

“I see that you are a student of Naranja Academy” The old man turned to Juliana and smiled. “I will be the caretaker for your trip. I apologize for Carmine’s behavior. She has been rowdy as of last week. Also, I got word from Kieran that you need help on a classmate of yours who fell ill. Is that correct?”

“Y-yes, sir.” Kieran nodded.

“Very Well.” The Caretaker said. “I will help out.”

“Thank you.” Juliana said. “They’re still at the bus stop.”

“Thank you, young lady.” The Caretaker smiled. “You are such a kind girl.”

The Caretaker left to tend to the sick student.

“Th-thank you for the w-warning.” Kieran said, playing with his hair. “And… I’m sorry for Sis’ behavior…”

“Don’t worry about it.” Juliana smiled. “You made the right choice to tell someone. Oh, she did challenge me to a battle and I defeated her.”

“Wowzers!” Kieran gasped. “You actually beat my sis?! No people could defeat Sis when they arrived at Kitakami.”

“You have a lot of knowledge on this, Kieran.” Juliana shook her head.

“I actually live here.” Kieran smiles shily. “And… I look forward to studying with you for this Field Trip.”

Kieran ran back home as Briar, the caretaker and the students arrived, the red cap the student feeling better. After that, everyone had a feast at the community center and had a goodnight sleep.

What an interesting Field Trip we’re gonna have. ” Juliana thought to herself. “ Kieran’s such a nice kid… but Carmine… I feel like I might have trouble trying to get to know her if she has some issues with me trying to enter Mossui…

The Paldean girl went to bed, trying to get a good night's sleep for the next day.

Notes:

Some notes I need to give

1. The art sent here is made by me and there were some attempts on trying to replicate the designs of both Carmine and Kieran.

2. I gave Nemona Quaxly instead of Sprigatito for two reasons, it would help Nemona train Juliana to become stronger and the idea that the rival gets a starter that's weaker than yours is a bit flawed.

Chapter 3: Chapter 2: The First Signboard

Summary:

The first day of the School fieldtrip to Kitakami begins. Juliana and Kieran pair up to find the three signboards.

Chapter Text

The next morning came and every participant was standing near the entrance of the Community Center. Carmine was pretending to smile as she looked at Juliana and her classmates while Kieran was trying not to be shy.

“Good morning, everyone!” Briar said in a cheerful tone. “Did you all sleep well last night?”

“Of course!” The red cap Naranja Academy student smiled.

“That was a wonderful feast!” The Female Naranja Academy student chirped.

“Wonderful!” Briar clapped her hands. “You all must be very excited to work with our two lovely Blueberry Academy students on this Field Trip!” The teacher turned to Carmine and Kieran. “Why don’t you introduce yourselves, children?”

“Hello!” Carmine is pretending to be enthusiastic. “My name is Carmine! It is a pleasure to meet you outsi- I mean… Lovely visitors from Paldea! I look forward to working with you!”

“H-hello…” Kieran waved shily. “I-I’m Kieran…”

“Carmine and Kieran actually grew up here in Kitakami!” The caretaker said. “If you have any questions about Kitakami, you can always ask them. And you two better be of help, is it a deal?”

“Aye-aye!” Carmine said with well-hidden sarcasm.

“Yes, sir.” Kieran nodded.

“Now that that’s settled.” The caretaker continued. “Why don’t we tell you what the assignment of this school field trip is? You will be working in pairs. Each pair will find signboards scattered through Kitakami and take a photo. There are three signboards found in Loyalty Plaza, Kitakami Hall and the Paradise Barrens. Each signboard tells of an urban legend. Before we begin, let me give you all a gift that will improve photo-taking with your Rotom Phones.”

The caretaker gave each Paldean student a Roto Stick and taught them a “rad” pose, the rad part had Briar giving the caretaker a look of disapproval.

“Thank you, sir.” Juliana smiled.

“Yeah! Thank you!” The other three Paldean students followed suit.

“Such wonderful children.” Briar smiled. “Well, then. Why don’t you find your pairs?”

Juliana had an idea of who she wanted to pair up with and went straight to Kieran’s spot.

“Hi, Kieran.” She smiled.

“H-hello…” Kieran was still nervous. “I’m sorry if I never got your name yesterday.”

“Oh yeah.” Juliana realized. “You never did get to know my name. It’s Juliana. Anyway, I just wanted to ask if you wanted to pair up with me for the assignment.”

“You… w-want to p-pair up with m-me?!” Kieran blushed as he heard Juliana’s question. “W-well…”

“Kiki would not shut up about you.” Carmine stepped in the conversation. “And that is surprising since he is usually quiet. By the way, he wanted to ask if you wanted to battle him since you did ask him to help you out with your little situation yesterday.”

“Sis! Don’t say that out loud!” Kieran turned to his sister. “Why are you telling her, dummy?!”

“Watch who you call dummy, young man!” Carmine hissed at her younger brother.

“First, don’t you think you should calm down on how you talk to Kieran?” Juliana said. “And second, of course I can battle you.”

“Y-you want to b-battle me?!” Kieran stuttered. “I-I’m so h-happy!”

“Alright, everyone!” Carmine called out. “M-make some space! A battle is about to begin!”

Everyone cleared up some space so Juliana and Kieran could begin their battle. Sentret was easy to defeat, but his Yanma was very difficult for Juliana since it had knocked out her Arboliva, Annihalape and Armarouge, the latter was defeated by a Critical Hit Bug Buzz. Juliana sent out Kilowatrel and used her Tera Orb to Terastalize her Kilowatrel to a Flying Type.

“What the?!” Carmine gasped.

“Wowzers!” Kieran said. “Is this… the method of Terastalization?! So cool!”

“I know.” Juliana said. “I got this Tera Orb after I helped out a friend. Now let’s finish this, Kilowatrel!”

With just a single Air Slash, Kilowatrel took down the remainder of Yanma’s HP. Kieran recalled his friend and smiled at the Pokéball.

“Wowzers… you’re such a strong battler.” He played with his hair. “There is no way I can beat you.”

“What are you talking about?” Juliana said, recalling Kilowatrel. “Your Yanma defeated half of my party, it even took down one of my Fire Types. You’re a good battler, Kieran.”

“R-really? Th-thank you so much!” Kieran’s eyes beamed in joy when he heard Juliana’s praise.

After they both healed their Pokémon and Juliana, recharged their Tera Orb, the students all made their pairs… Juliana with Kieran, Carmine with the tall Paldean student, who Juliana calls Emanuel, and the red cap student, who Juliana calls Josue, with the female student, who Juliana calls Paloma.

Each pair went to a different side of Mossui Town to talk.

“So…” Juliana played with her braid. “Where do we go first?”

“I-I suggest we find them in order and go to Loyalty Plaza.” Kieran hummed. “That way, you can learn of the legend better. You can g-go ahead… I’ll catch u-up.”

“There’s no need to stay behind.” Juliana smiled. “We can both go together slowly. It can help me with catching some Pokémon in Kitakami.”

“A-are you sure?” Kieran shook his head. “I m-may be a burden.”

“You won’t be a burden.” Juliana smiled. “I promise.”

The two walked up slowly to Loyalty Plaza, with Juliana catching a Sentret, a Sewaddle, a Poochyena, a Bellsprout, an Ekans and an Applin, since Kieran told her of a new form of Applin. They arrived at Loyalty Plaza.

“There it is. The first signboard.” Kieran saw the signboard.

The two went to the signboard and since this was Juliana’s first time in Kitakami, she decided to read the signboard.

“Let’s see…” She looked at the signboard. “It says… ‘Long, long ago, there was a fearsome ogre in the land of Kitakami. The ogre made its home in the mountain behind the village, frightening all who ventured there. One day, the ogre came down from the mountain in a terrible rage, causing great fear in the village. By some stroke of luck, Okidogi, Munkidori, and Fezandipiti all happened to be there as well. The three Pokémon laid down their lives to fend off the ogre and send it back to the mountain. In admiration, the people of the village bestowed upon this brave trio the title "the Loyal Three." Their remains were given a proper burial, and statues of the three were erected above the site’ Well… this is…”

“That is the legend of an ogre and the Loyal Three.” Kieran said. “Don’t you think that the Ogre is a cool Pokémon?”

“It is a really cool concept.” Juliana said.

“Really?!” Kieran’s eyes beamed in joy. “The ogre defeated three Pokémon at once! It was very strong.” He then shook his head. “But… no one would like a scary looking ogre.”

“You like the ogre?” Juliana asked.

“Yeah…” Kieran nodded. “You know… when I was small, I would always travel to the ogre’s home to find and meet the ogre, but I found nothing… the only scary part was the amount of earfuls the adult gave me.” He realized something. “Oh, right! We should take a picture for our assignment.”

They took a picture with Juliana’s Rotom Phone since Kieran doesn’t own a Rotom Pokémon.

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (2)

“That was a great picture.” Juliana said. “You seem too nervous to go on this trip, Kieran.”

“Honestly, I didn’t want to go on this field trip…” Kieran sighed. “But I am glad I did… I get to go around my hometown and talk to you, Juliana… By the way… all this walking made me a bit hungry… we can settle for a picnic… would you like a sandwich-?”

He was interrupted when Koraidon popped out of its Pokéball, scaring him.

“Gyah!” He nearly screamed. “What is that thing?! Some kind of… kaiju or s-something?!”

“A Kaiju?” Juliana shook her head. “This is my Ride Pokémon, Koraidon.”

“Koraidon?” Kieran tilted his head. “And you ride on it? And it comes out of its Pokéball when it hears the word sandwich?”

“Yes.” Juliana nodded. “I did give it a sandwich made by my mom because it was weak…”

“Wowzers… you’re really special, Juliana.” Kieran muttered to himself.

“What was that?” Juliana heard the muttering.

“I-I-It’s n-n-nothing!” Kieran nearly panicked. “D-do you still want to do a p-picnic?!”

“Of course!” Juliana said. “I am hungry too. We can make some curry to go along with the sandwiches.”

“You make curry?!” Kieran beamed in joy.

“Of course!” Juliana nodded. “It is a specialty in Galar, where I used to live!”

They had a picnic where they fed themselves and their Pokémon curry and sandwiches. As they were packing their stuff for the picnic and the curry, Juliana realized something.

“Where to next?” She asked.

“We head off to Kitakami Hall, that’s where the second signboard is.” Kieran answered.

“Before we go there, can you tell me where the item for the new Applin form is?” Juliana asked. “I am very curious.”

“Of course!” Kieran smiled. “Let’s go!”

“Do you want to try riding Koraidon?” Juliana asked.

“I can try…” Kieran nodded.

Juliana sent out Koraidon and hopped on after helping Kieran and they headed off to continue their journey.

Chapter 4: Chapter 3: The Second Signboard

Summary:

Juliana and Kieran do a syrupy evolution, go to another signboard and walk to a dreaded den.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Before going to the second signboard at Kitakami Hall, Juliana decided to have Koraidon do a detour to find a specific apple for Applin.

“The apple needed for the new form of Applin isn’t in the apple orchards.” Kieran said.

“Where are they?” Juliana asked.

“They are past the Mossfell Confluence near Reveler’s Road.” The black and purple haired boy answered. “There is a little shed that sells Syrupy Apples for 500 Pokédollars.”

“That’s more expensive than a potion.” Juliana gasped.

“I know…” Kieran shook his head. “I had used some of my allowance money to buy it so I could evolve my Applin.”

“You had an Applin?” Juliana asked.

“Yes.” Kieran nodded. “He is one of my first partners alongside Furret, Yanma and Poliwhirl.”

“I see.” Juliana added.

They arrived at the shed where the Syrupy Apples were sold. Juliana shortly hopped off to give 500 Pokédollars to the money jar and grabbed a Syrupy apple.

“I am curious.” She asked. “What will it look like? There are two forms of Applin called Flapple and Appletun. And they both have the same Gigantamax Form.”

“Wowzers, really?” Kieran said in awe. “A-anyway… here’s my buddy Dipplin.”

Kieran sent out his partner Dipplin. It was two syrpents teaming up to control a big candy apple with one being the head and the other being the tail.

“Wow!” Juliana’s eye beamed in awe. “It’s so cool! I have never seen this before! No one in Paldea has this!”

“Dipplin is very unique to Kitakami.” Kieran smiled. “S-simialr to my Sis’ Poltchageist.”

“I see.” Juliana then sent out the Applin she caught on the way to Loyalty Plaza. “Here, Applin. An Apple you will like.”

Applin touched the Syrupy Apple and started glowing blue. Its form changed to a candy apple and two syrpents controlling it. Applin had evolved to a Dipplin.

It worked! ” Juliana thought to herself as she watched in joy.

Her Rotom Phone rang and she picked it up.

“Dipplin’s data has been added to the Pokédex.” The Rotom Phone’s Pokédex app activated. “Dipplin. The Candy Apple Pokémon. Dipplin is two creatures in one Pokémon. Its evolution is triggered by a special apple that grows in one place.”

“W-wowzers!” Kieran was surprised by the technology of the Rotom Phone. “Your Rotom Phone is a flying Pokédex?!”

“Yes.” Juliana said. “I got the Pokédex app from my neighbor and classmate Nemona. It was created by my homeroom teacher, Professor Jacq.”

“No way.” Kieran was still shocked. “I still write notes about Pokémon in my notebook.” He realizes something. “Gyah! We must have derailed from the assignment! We should be at Kitakami Hall finding the second signboard! Let’s go!”

Juliana recalled Dipplin and hopped back on Koraidon, with Kieran sitting right behind her. The Winged King made its way to Kitakami Hall and made its stop infront of the signboard. Kieran and Juliana hopped off before the latter recalled Koraidon.

“That’s the second signboard.” Kieran said. “Let’s read it.”

“Alright.” Juliana nodded. “It says… ‘The ogre possessed four mysterious, glimmering masks. It is said that depending on the mask the ogre donned, the powers of its cudgel would change. When wearing the teal mask, it could bring life back into withered greenery around it. When wearing the crimson mask, it could turn a candle's flame into a raging inferno. When wearing the blue mask, it could stop the very flow of a river. When wearing the ashen gray mask, it could easily break the hardest stone in two. Before the Loyal Three fell, they wrested away three of the ogre's masks, greatly weakening it.’ Four Masks…”

“It is said that the ogre would spread fear by changing its mask.” Kieran said. “But it is so cool that the Ogre was switching between four masks! Oh… but it was caught off guard by the Loyal Three…”

“It’s ok to like something others don’t.” Juliana smiled. “I’m the only one in my class who likes curry while the others prefer sandwiches.”

“I see.” Kieran mused. “Oh. Right. Picture. Time to take a picture.”

The two then took a picture with Juliana’s Rotom Phone.

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (3)

“Hey, before we go…” Kieran scratched his head. “Do you… maybe… want to go with me… somewhere?”

“Where do you want to go?” Juliana asked.

“A place where no one dares to go…” Kieran answered. “The Dreaded Den… the Ogre’s home.”

“The Dreaded Den?” Juliana said.

“Yeah…” Kieran nodded. “I’m sorry… I… I know you don’t want to-”

“What do you mean?” Juliana shook her head. “Of course I want to go!”

“R-really?!” Kieran’s eyes beamed. “What are you waiting for?! Let’s go!”

The two ran towards the Dreaded Den, with Juliana following Kieran. Kieran had suggested looking for the ogre inside of its den, but they had no luck. When they had gone outside, the sun was setting.

“Oh wow.” Juliana said. “It’s getting dark already? I guess we need to go to bed for the next day.”

“W-wait… t-there’s something I want to say…” Kieran stuttered.

“What’s wrong?” Juliana turned to him.

“Well… tonight is the first day of the Festival of Masks…” The black and purple haired boy continued. “And I wanted to ask… if you wanted to go there with me…”

“You want me to go to the Festival of Masks with you?” Juliana said. “Of course I do! This is my first time experiencing one of these!”

“R-Really?” Kieran’s eyes beamed in joy. “I-I’m s-so happy! We can get you ready for the Festival at my house! Now… if we built a map for shortcuts…”

Juliana’s Rotom Phone turned on and opened the map application. It was showing the map of the Kitakami region.

“Wowzers!” Kieran gasped. “Your Rotom Phone works as a map too?!”

“Yeah.” Juliana said. “It’s easier than drawing a map.”

“I-I see.” Kieran said as he went to try to use the Rotom Phone. “Ok… I believe my house is right… here.” He pinpointed the location of his house with just one tap on the screen. “Wowzers… Rotom Phones can be anything… cameras, Pokédexes, maps… I wish I had one.”

“I can get you one when I have spare time.” Juliana smiled.

“R-Really?” Kieran smiled. “Thank you. I always wanted a Rotom Phone. Maybe I can get one for my next birthday. Now come on. Let’s get you ready for the Festival of Masks.”

The two ran off Oni Mountain, following the path to Mossui Town as they made their way to Kieran’s house.

Notes:

I did not include the second battle against Kieran because I honestly forgot that there was a second battle against Kieran when you first enter the Dreaded Den.

Chapter Text

Juliana and Kieran arrived at the latter’s home, where his grandparents were waiting.

“Grandpa! Grandma!” Kieran called out. “I’m home!”

“Welcome home, Kieran.” Kieran’s grandfather smiled. “And I see you brought along a friend. Who is this girl?”

“F-Friend…” Kieran said shily. “That’s one way to put our fellow student. Oh, this Juliana. She is a student from Paldea.”

“Hello, sir. Ma’am.” Juliana bowed. “Nice to meet you.”

“What a kind young girl.” Kieran’s grandmother smiled. “My name is Hideko and this is my husband Yukito.”

“Did you both need something?” Yukito asked.

“Well…” Kieran tapped his two index fingers together. “Tonight is the first day of this year’s Festival of Mask and I was asking if you have something to help Juliana get ready.”

“Why, of course!” Hideko nodded. “We have a spare jinbei just in case someone wants to participate in the festivities. Come with me, sweetheart.”

A few minutes later, Hideko helped Juliana dress up in a green Kitakami-styled Jinbei and did a little ponytail for her. Kieran had also changed to his white jinbei.

“There you go.” Hideko said. “Now you are ready to participate in the Festival of Masks.”

“Oh, grandpa!” Carmine got outside her house, wearing her blue jinbei. “Have you seen our masks, we need them for the-” She then notices Juliana next to her brother. “Hey! Why is she here?!”

“Relax, Sis.” Kieran said. “I invited her to join us at the Festival and she agreed.”

“You? Inviting someone?” Carmine tried not to laugh. “Now that is something new that I’ve heard today.”

“Why are you so mean to Juliana, Sis?” Kieran glared at his sister. “She has been nothing but kind to us.”

“Enough, you two.” Yukito looked at his grandchildren. “You are embarrassing us in front of our guest.”

“S-sorry, Gramps…” Kieran said while Carmine huffed.

“Now to answer your question, Carmine.” Yukito faced his granddaughter. “The masks are at the mask shed. You may also find a mask for Juliana too.”

“The Mask Shed, hugh…” Carmine mused. “Well… first come, first served, is what they say!” Carmine ran off to the mask shed.

“Sis! Hold on!” Kieran chased after his sister.

“I am so sorry about Carmine and Kieran.” Yukito sighed as he faced Juliana. “They can be… at each other’s throat sometimes. Especially Carmine due to-”

“It’s ok.” Juliana smiled. “Kieran’s a sweet kid, I’m happy you raised him”

“You’re way too sweet.” Hideko smiled back. “I am glad you became friends with Kieran. Maybe you should go grab a mask at the Mask Shed. Kieran and Carmine are already there.”

Juliana went to the shed, where Carmine made a mess while looking for a mask for Juliana. Carmine was wearing a Munkidori mask while Kieran was wearing an ogre mask.

“Where is it?!” Carmine hissed.

“Um… sis?” Kieran tugged his sister’s junbei shirt.

“Oh. You’re here.” Carmine saw Juliana. “Were you here to find a mask? Unfortunately for you, the masks Kiki and I have are the only ones in there.”

“Sorry, Juliana…” Kieran sighed. “You can have my mask if you want. I’ll buy another one for myself.”

“Kiki, are you nuts?!” Carmine hissed. “That’s your beloved Ogre Mask! You can’t give it away!” She took a deep breath. “Very well… if you want a mask, you better battle me!”

“Sis! That’s not necessary!” Kieran growled at his sister. “And you don’t need to battle Juliana everytime for no reason!”

“It’s okay, you two…” Juliana tried to calm the siblings down. “I don’t need a mask. I’ll be ok.”

“Battle me regardless.” Carmine said.

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (4)

“I’m so sorry, Juliana…” Kieran sighed. “Sis loves to battle…”

“It’s ok.” Juliana said. “During our trips, I did some training with the Kitakami Pokémon I caught.”

Juliana saw that Carmine had not only evolved her Poochyena to a Mightyena and her Poltchageist into an Unremarkable Sinistcha, but also caught a Morpeko and Swadloon. However, even though she defeated Carmine again, there was no mask to give Juliana, something she didn’t mind.

After that totally unnecessary battle, Carmine, Kieran and Juliana went to Kitakami Hall, where the Festival of Masks takes place.

“Behold! The Festival of Masks!” Carmine showed Juliana around. “This festival is to celebrate the honor of the Loyal Three who took down the ogre.”

“We do Festivals of Masks every year.” Kieran said. “It… helps tourists enjoy Kitakami.”

“I know one way to help make memories.” Carmine had an idea. “Hey, may I borrow your Roto-Stick?”

“Sure.” Juliana gave Carmine her Roto-Stick.

Carmine took a selfie of her, Juliana and Kieran together at the Festival of Masks with Juliana’s Roto-Stick, Kieran bought some candy apples for him and Juliana and Juliana explored the Festival of Masks until something caught her eyes. It was a traditional Kitakami Game called Ogre Oustin’.

“So you’re interested in Ogre Oustin’?” Carmine said. “Do you think you can beat my record of 6,390 points?”

“Sis, stop challenging people!” Kieran hissed. “It’s getting old!”

“It’s ok, Kieran.” Juliana said. “I can do one game of Ogre Oustin’. It looks like fun.”

“You can do it, Juliana!” Kieran cheered for the Paldean Girl.

This is going to be interesting. ” Carmine thought to herself. “ There is no way that this outsider can beat my record? I got it at last year’s Festival of Masks .”

Juliana struggled at first since Koraidon was hungry, but she made a score of 6,510 points, beating Carmine’s record by 110 points. Carmine was upset and challenged Kieran to beat her, however, when he refused, the siblings started another argument. Juliana saw a strange kid walking around and slowly went to it.

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (5)

“Hello, little one.” She spoke to it nicely. “I love your mask. Are you enjoying the Festival?”

After a few minutes of silence, the kid ran off to the stairs of Oni Mountain. Juliana chased after it.

“Hold on! I don’t want to hurt you!” Juliana tried to call out.

The kid finished climbing up the stairs, but it dropped its mask, revealing that it was not a kid, but a Pokémon. Juliana grabbed the mask and tried to give it back.

“You dropped your mask.” Juliana said.

The kid instead ran off back to Oni Mountain. Juliana looked back at the mask.

“This kid… it wasn’t a kid…” She said to herself. “But… it was the ogre?! I need to tell you someone… someone I trust.”

She looked around for someone to tell about what happened. She saw Kieran mumbling to himself in anger.

“Umbelievable…” He muttered. “Sis is so annoying…”

“Um… Kieran?” Juliana went to him. “Are you ok?”

“Oh, hi, Juliana…” Kieran sighed. “I’m sorry you had to witness Sis’s… pride.”

“It’s ok.” Juliana smiled. “Can we talk somewhere private?”

“Um… sure?” Kieran was confused.

The two of them headed off to the stairs that lead to Oni Mountain.

“What do you want to say?” Kieran asked.

“I’m sorry if this upsets you…” Juliana said. “But… I saw the ogre… It had run off and along the way, it dropped this…” She shows the mask the Ogre was wearing. “I tried to give it back, but I must have unintentionally scared it… do you… want to come with me to try to give the mask back?”

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (6)

Instead of anger, Juliana saw joy in Kieran’s eyes. She had asked him to go with her to give the mask back to the ogre… he felt like he was dreaming.

“Of course!” Kieran almost screamed as he grabbed her hand. “Come on! Let’s go!”

The two of them then ran off to the Dreaded Den. Kieran had gotten a lot of stamina since he had gone there plenty of time, Juliana, on the other hand, was trying to regain her energy since running around on sandals can be a bit painful on your feet.

They looked around for the ogre.

“Hello?” Kieran called out. “Little Ogre?”

“It’s me…” Juliana also called out. “The girl from the festival… I want to give your mask back to you…”

Nothing happened. Kieran sighed, defeated.

“Aw man…” He whimpered. “I was hoping we could actually do it… Perhaps we should ask Gramps to see if-”

HOW DARE YOU !!!!” Carmine’s voice rang out as she stomped to Kieran and Juliana in anger. “ WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING, YOUNG MAN?! RUNNING OUTSIDE OF KITAKAMI HALL IN YOUR JINBEI?! ONCE I TELL GRANDPA, YOU ARE GOING TO BE SO GROUNDED!!! ” She then turned to Juliana. “ AS FOR YOU, MISSY!!! DON’T THINK YOU CAN GET AWAY WITH SNEAKING OUT WITH MY LITTLE BROTHER!! SUCH RECKLESS BEHAVIOR FOR AN OUTSIDER!!!!

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (7)

“S-Sis! H-Hold on!” Kieran tried to calm down his sister, who is as enraged as a Primape overusing Rage Fist just to evolve. “I-I should be the one held responsi-”

DO NOT TALK BACK AT A TIME LIKE THIS!!! ” Carmine almost shouted as she harshly grabbed their wrists. “ COME ON!! WE ARE GOING BACK TO THE FESTIVAL!! AND YOU ARE NOT GONNA LEAVE THE AREA UNLESS ONE OF YOU IS SLEEPY!!

“Ow… that’s too tight, Sis…” Kieran sounded like he was about to cry.

The three of them returned to Kitakami Hall, with no one aware of what happened since they were enjoying the Festival of Masks. Carmine ran off to grab some ramen from the stalls so she could calm down.

“I am so so so so so sorry about what happened…” Kieran bowed nonstop. “Sis isn’t usually like this…”

“It’s ok…” Juliana was still smiling despite the fact that she was scolded. “This is the first time I got scolded for something.” She let out a yawn. “All this fun and adventure made me sleepy…”

“Do you want me to take you back to the community center?” Kieran asked.

“Of course.” Juliana said.

They took a slow walk to avoid Carmine’s glare.

“About the mask…” Kieran said. “We should take it to Gramps, just in case… He may know of its origins.”

“Alright.” Juliana said. “I’ll be at your house tomorrow morning.”

“Thanks, Juliana.” Kieran smiled.

The two returned to Mossui Town and Kieran dropped Juliana off to the Community Center. Just as Kieran was about to say good night, Juliana hugged him. He was surprised at first, but he later hugged back. It was the first time in a while since someone besides his family hugged him. As much as he wanted to stay in Juliana’s embrace, he still had to make sure she got to bed. She smiled as she went inside the Community Center, where Briar greeted them with a smile.

Kieran yawned as well and went back home, so he could get a good night sleep.

Notes:

This is my first time drawing masks in a while and I have not seen the reference of their jinbei, so I hope my art isn't as bad.

Chapter Text

The next morning came and Juliana woke up extremely early, despite the long night at the Festival of Masks. She picked up the ogre’s mask and put it in her bag. She swapped clothes from her Festival Junbei to her Naranja Academy Summer Uniform and rushed to Kieran’s house, where Kieran and Yukito were waiting outside.

“Ah. Hello, Juliana.” Yukito smiled. “It’s such a pleasure to see you.”

“Good morning, Sir Yukito. Kieran.” Juliana smiled back.

“There is no need for formalities.” Yukito chuckled. “You can just call me Yukito.”

“H-Hey, Grandpa…” Kieran started speaking. “C-can we a-ask a favor for you?”

“Gooooooood morning, Mossui Town!” Carmine interrupted the conversation as she walked out of the house. “Time for Carmine to shine!” She then turns to Kieran. “Say, Kiki, could you move over for a bit? I wish to speak to Grandpa.”

“No fair, sis!” Kieran pouted. “I was here first! And Juliana also wants to talk to Grandpa! You can be such a jerk sometimes, you know that?!”

“What did you just call me, young man?!” Carmine hissed, her black and scarlet hair flaring up like fire. “You should watch how you talk to your older sister!”

“You should have watched your tone as you embarrassed me in front of everyone at the Festival of Masks as you tried to persuade me to Ogre Oustin’!” Kieran continued, unusually angry at his sister.

“Enough, both of you!” Yukito yelled at his children. He first turns to Carmine. “Carmine, the way you spoke to your brother wasn’t kind.”

“I was being kind!” Carmine growled. “It’s not like I hit him or anything.”

Yukito then turned to Kieran.

“And Kieran, you shouldn’t be calling your sister mean names.” He added.

“Sorry, Grandpa…” Kieran sighed. “I was so angry…”

“It is ok to be angry, Kieran.” Juliana said, patting him on the shoulder.

“Carmine, why don’t you wait near the house while I talk to your brother?” Yukito patted Carmine on her shoulder.

“What?!” Carmine hissed. “Fine. You can go waste Grandpa’s time, Kiki… outsider.”

With a hmph, Carmine walked off, muttering how her morning was already ruined.

“I am so sorry, Juliana…” Kieran sighed. “I never get angry, but Sis has been pulling so many buttons lately.”

“It’s ok. Kieran.” Juliana smiled.

“Before we were interrupted, what did you need to tell me, Kieran?” Yukito asked.

“Do you still have the thing, Juliana?” Kieran whispered to Juliana’s ear.

Juliana nodded and took out the mask. Yukito looked at the mask in disbelief.

“Is this… the Teal Mask?” He gasped. “Where did you find it?”

“I was exploring around the Festival and I saw the Ogre wearing it…” Juliana tried to explain. “I tried to start a conversation, but it ran off, dropping the mask in the process… the first person I told was Kieran.”

Much to Kieran’s relief, she left out the part where they ran off to the Dreaden Den to give the mask back.

“To think that the ogre would still grace us with its presence.” Yukito muttered to himself, but he did not notice he said that phrase outloud.

“Still?” Kieran was confused. “What are you talking about, Grandpa? Doesn’t it say that the ogre terrorized the town?”

Yukito hesitated before turning around. He knew Kieran loves the ogre and he knew that Juliana wasn’t from Kitakami. He took a deep breath.

“I suppose it is time I tell you the truth, Kieran…” He said. “The actual story about the ogre… is the other way around.”

“The other way around?” Kieran was even more confused. “What do you mean?”

“You should hear this too, Juliana.” Yukito turned to Juliana. “You met the ogre… or… Ogerpon as it is rightfully named. Let me tell you the true story as it was passed down from generation to generation… a story passed down from mouth to mouth. I learned it from my father.” He closed his eyes. “This is a story of truths. A story that must never be told to the rest of the villagers. You must never speak of it to the others.”

“Alright.” Juliana nodded, her voice sounding unusually serious.

“I understand, Grandpa…” Kieran nodded.

Yukito then opened its eyes and told the story of Ogerpon.

Long long ago, there was a man who was travelling with his partner Pokémon, Ogerpon. They arrived to Kitakami from a far off region, so the villagers were afraid of their different appearance. They were saddened, yet they were still happy because they had each other. They made their home in the mountains. One person held pity for the duo, the village mask maker. The mask maker carved four masks with mysterious crystals and gave them to the duo so they could fit in with the villagers at the festival... but the masks caught the attention of three greedy Pokémon, Okidogi, Munkidori and Fezandipiti. The three greedy Pokémon went to the duo's home to steal the mask, but the man arrived and attempted to stop the robberies, being able to protect only one mask. Ogerpon returned home only to see a struggle and the Teal Mask. Enraged, Ogerpon donned the mask and set off on a quest for revenge and to find its fallen partner. It defeated the Loyal Three in battle. The villagers who saw the whole event were terrified. They believed the three Pokémon protected the villagers from the fearsome ogre. The three Fallen Pokémon were dubbed the Loyal Three and buried in a monument called Loyalty Plaza while Ogerpon returned home... alone and sad…

After the story ended, Juliana was left in stunned silence… to think that Ogerpon would end up ostracized and labeled as a monster while her enemies were praised as heroes who lost their lives. It reminded her of what happened to Penny and Team Star. Team Star and Penny were bullied by other students and Team Star initiated Operation Star so they could fight back their bullies, only for them to run away and drop out of Naranja Academy. In the end. Penny took the blame and had to return to Galar.

She turned to Kieran, who was trembling in anger.

“No way…” He said in a soft voice. He thought that Ogerpon was a brave warrior who defeated the Loyal Three in a three on one battle. He then raised his voice. “OGERPON DID NOT DESERVE ANY OF THIS!! AND THE LOYAL THREE!! THOSE JERKS ARE THE WORST!!! ” He turned around to leave. “ I HAVE TO TELL THE REST OF THE VILLAGERS!! THEY NEED TO KNOW!!!

“Hold, Kieran!!” Yukito stopped his grandson from stepping foot outside their front yard. “I have told you to keep it to yourself!”

“B-but grandpa!” Kieran tried to say something.

“The people believe their own side of the story.” The grandfather continued. “How would they feel if they were told that their story was all a lie?”

“They’d… feel upset…” Kieran answered.

“Exactly.” Yukito nodded. “When all of this happened, the mask maker, our ancestor, tried to explain the truth of the story, but no one took him seriously and he was labeled a heretic.”

“I really want to help Ogerpon…” Kieran whimpered as he went back to his grandfather. “I can’t let them suffer like this… We have to do something now.”

“I wish we could do something, Kieran.” Yukito said. “In the end, the mask maker could protect his descendants, us, by keeping his mouth shut. However, he passed down the truth to his descendants from generation to generation. It was kept a family secret.”

“Does Sis know yet?” Kieran asked.

“No, she does not.” Yukito shook his head. “I have not spoken to her about it, why do you ask?”

“Sis can be a bit brash at times and… I’m afraid she might put us and Juliana in danger and spread the word.” Kieran answered.

“I do not want to keep Carmine in the dark.” Yukito shook his head. “But I will keep your word for now, and I will tell her when the time is right. For now, do not say a word to anybody.”

“Of course, Grandpa…” Kieran nodded. “I cannot believe that this happened to Ogerpon…”

“Now about the mask.” Yukito looked at the Teal Mask. “I noticed that the jewel on its forehead was chipped. I might be able to fix it, would you mind if I stayed with it?”

“We don’t mind, Grandpa!” Kieran smiled. “Ogerpon would be very happy if they saw that their mask is fixed!”

“Don’t worry, you two.” Yukito smiled back. “I’ll be sure to take good care of the mask.”

“Thank you, Grandpa!” Kieran chirped. “I promise that you won’t be let down!”

What the three of them did not know is that Carmine overheard the entire conversation. She was gritting her teeth in anger, her hands holding the front part of her hair. She was left out by her own grandfather and her brother… and not only that, the person who is not even from her home region learned the truth of a story she should have known before her. She took a deep breath and ran towards Peachy’s to calm down.

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (8)

A few minutes later, Juliana bought some Pokéballs at Peachy’s when Carmine walked up to her.

“Hello, Juliana.” Carmine, pretending to be friendly. “I hope you don’t mind me asking, but what were you, Grandpa and Kiki talking about?”

“Oh… we were talking about this and that…” Juliana smiled. “Nothing important.”

“Oh… I see….” Carmine’s smile dropped. “I heard you were going to the last signboard at Paradise Barrens. Maybe you will learn something very important.”

“Alright.” Juliana nodded. “Thank you, Carmine. I hope you find your signboard at Kitakami Hall.”

Juliana walked to where Kieran was waiting for her. Carmine looked down in anger.

“You…” She hissed. “You lied to me… you hid something from me…”

As the sun was setting, Juliana and Kieran arrived at the third signboard at the Paradise Barrens. Before Kieran could say anything, Juliana walked up to the signboard.

“The third signboard…” She said. “Let’s read. It says… ‘If you see a shadowy figure approaching you outside the village at twilight, be wary. Don a mask at once and hide your face. Do so and whether the shadow is man or monster, you will pass each other by as fellow mask wearers. If you should meet the shadow when you have no mask in hand, then pray it is only a man. If it is, you will live to see another day and you will remember to never forget your mask again. But if it is the ogre, you will meet your end as do all humans whose faces are seen by it. Once it sees your face, your soul will be forfeit. And you shall never return to the village.’ Hm…”

“Juliana?” Kieran said. “Are you ok?”

“Something is not right…” Juliana said. “The story of Ogerpon and the story at the signboards are all different… and not only that… I didn’t have a mask last night and I didn’t get my soul absorbed…”

“You’re right…” Kieran nodded.

“Come on… let’s take a picture… that way, we’re the first group to finish the assignment for the school field trip.” Juliana suggested.

They took the last picture, however, Juliana did not have the energy to pose while Kieran looked at Juliana worriedly.

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (9)

“H-hey, Juliana?” Kieran went to her. “Do you… want to battle?”

“Are you sure, Kieran?” Juliana looked worriedly at Kieran. “I’m afraid you might hate me if you lose.”

“O-of course I won’t hate you!” Kieran shook his head. “You’re my friend! And there is no way I would hate you at all!”

“Alright…” Juliana took out a Pokéball. “If you want a battle, I’ll give you a battle.”

Juliana struggled since there were no Pokémon who could defeat Kieran’s newly caught Gligar and Poliwhirl had evolved to a Poliwrath. Only Arboliva was left standing because of its Seed Sower ability activating Grassy Terrain.

“That was close.” Juliana said.

“You don’t sound like… your old self, Juliana…” Kieran said. “Are you ok?”

“Sorry for my behavior, Kieran…” Juliana sighed. “But I was reminded of a friend of mine. Her name is Penny.”

She stopped herself before she could say anything. Juliana was never hesitant to speak and she was always kind and devoted to her friends. Seeing her like this made Kieran even more worried. The first thing he did was to hug her. She hugged back, feeling relieved that she still had someone to rely on in Kitakami.

“There is nothing to worry about, Juliana. I am right here.” Kieran said.

“Thank you, Kieran.” Juliana whispered.

They broke the hug as the sky was getting darker.

“Wowzers.” Kieran looked at the sky. “It’s dark already? Come on. Let’s go back to Mossui Town.”

“Alright.” Juliana nodded.

The both of them walked back to Mossui Town, their assignment finally done.

Chapter 7: Chapter 6: Confrontation

Summary:

Things turn bad for Kieran, Juliana and Carmine as Juliana and Kieran go on a quest to fix Ogerpon's mask and Carmine starts down a toxic path.

Notes:

This was one of the hardest chapters to write since I imagined myself replaying the Teal Mask and how much my throat would hurt if I roleplayed 14 year old Kieran screaming at me.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Juliana woke up and went to Kieran’s house to check on the Teal Mask, but things could not have gone worse when she showed up.

“What are you and Juliana hiding, Kiki?!” Carmine yelled at her brother. “And what are you plotting with the outsider?!”

“I told you! There is NOTHING to talk about!” Kieran shouted back.

“Wakamono yo, watashi ni iikaesu yūki wa nai yo! (Don’t you dare talk back to me, young man!)” Carmine hissed.

“Why are you always trying to shut me up, sis!” Kieran raised his voice. “I am very tired of it! Haven’t you considered that?!”

“What is going on here?!” Juliana went to the siblings.

“Juliana!” Kieran saw the Paldean girl and relief went to his eyes.

“Stay out of this, outsider!” Carmine turned to Juliana. “This is between Kiki and me!”

“Could you please calm down, Carmine?” Juliana said in a calm tone. “There are people sleeping and my classmates are also present. You don’t want to put yourself in trouble.”

“There is no need to make things worse, sis.” Kieran calmed down. “Please.”

“Not if you tell me what you and that outsider are hiding from me, Kiki!!” Carmine hissed.

“Carmine, please…” Juliana tried to stop Carmine’s rampage.

“I told you to stay out of this!!” Carmine hissed at Juliana.

“Stop excluding Juliana out of our problem, Sis!” Kieran said. “You’re gonna-”

“I told you not to talk back to me!!” Carmine shouted.

“What is going on here?!” Yukito arrived and glared at his granddaughter.

“Grandpa!” Kieran gasped.

“I had just arrived and Carmine was interrogating Kieran.” Juliana answered.

“Carmine, what did we say about-?” Yukito was going to ask about his granddaughter’s rage when she turned around.

“You are all liars.” She gritted between her teeth. “Liars who only care about yourselves.”

“Carmine, what are you-?” Juliana tried to ask when Carmine walked away from home.

“Sis?!” Kieran ran to his sister. “Where are you going?! Come back!”

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (10)

As he tried to reach his hand out, she had disappeared from his sight. Perhaps she wanted to stay away from him… or maybe she was missing the last signboard. But she never turned around to face him.

Kieran broke down in tears. Yukito sighed as he couldn’t stop a fight between his grandchildren for the first time in life.

“I’m sorry, Juliana.” He said. “Perhaps we may need some time alone.”

“No.” Juliana shook her head and went to Kieran. “Kieran, look at me.”

Kieran looked at Juliana, the light in his yellow eyes were gone and tears couldn’t stop streaming down his eyes.

“It’s all my fault…” The black and purple haired boy sobbed. “If I didn’t come to Kitakami… if I didn’t meet you… if I didn’t take you to return the mask to the ogre… it’s all my fault-”

“Don’t say such things, Kieran!” Juliana grabbed his hand. “None of this is your fault. You were keeping a promise to your grandfather and you were trying to protect yourself and me. You know you’re not alone. I will always be by your side. Remember that.”

The light came back to Kieran’s eyes as he heard Juliana’s motivation speech. He then dried the tears inhis eyes.

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (11)

“Juliana… Thank you…” He sobbed. “I’m glad to have you as a friend. And as a partner for this field trip.”

“The feeling is mutual, Kieran.” Juliana gave a smile. “Now let’s-”

“If you are talking about the mask, there is one problem.” Yukito said.

“What is it, sir?” Juliana asked.

“Unfortunately, I am needing a material to replace the chipped jewel.” Yukito explained. “It is a crystal cluster from the crystal pool.”

“The crystal pool?” Juliana asked.

“It is a mysterious pool found in the Infernal Pass.” Kieran said. “One of the Six Wonders of Kitakami.”

“I see.” Juliana nodded.

“I wish you good luck.” Yukito said. “And Juliana… thank you for sticking by Kieran’s side.”

“Of course, sir.” Juliana smiled.

Meanwhile at Peachy’s, Carmine had returned from catching some Pokémon.

“This will not be the last of me.” She muttered to herself.

Suddenly, a Peach-shaped toy slumbering on Peachy’s opened its eyes. It woke from its slumber and approached Carmine.

“Huh?!” Carmine looked at the toy in anger. “Who are you?! Are you a lost kid?!”

The toy opened its case, revealing a creature. The creature smiled.

“You’re… a Pokémon?” Carmine gasped.

The Creature unleashed a toxic chain, but it didn’t harm Carmine. Instead, it pointed the chain at her house and then at Loyalty Plaza.

“You want me to do something at home and then go to Loyalty Plaza?” Carmine said. “Oh. I see. You want me to have the Teal Mask for something.”

The Pokémon nodded.

“Interesting. Perhaps this will teach Kiki and that outsider a lesson on not keeping secrets from me.” Carmine smiled darkly.

The Pokémon shot a piece of purple mochi at Carmine’s hands.

“Is this… Mochi?” She asked. “And she want me to eat it?”

“Cha-cha-run!” The Pokémon chirped.

Carmine ate the mochi. It tasted like normal mochi, but it would be sweeter. She felt nothing… except the after taste of the Mochi. The Pokémon fired a weaker mochi since it didn’t want to harm Carmine yet.

“I will do what you told me.” Carmine said. “And I will find your friends and capture that ogre. Just you wait. I will succeed… um… what’s your name?”

“Pecharunt!” The Pokémon, Pecharunt, chanted.

“Pecharunt, huh?” Carmine said. “I will remember that name.

Carmine ran off back home. She was ready to complete her mission.

Meanwhile, Kieran and Juliana arrived at the crystal pool.

“Wowzers!” Kieran’s eyes beamed in awe. “I’ve never seen something so beautiful! Let’s not get distracted, we need to find the Crystal Cluster so Gramps can fix it.”

They looked around for a crystal cluster perfect for the Teal Masks, but they had no luck.

“I think the last place we haven’t searched is underwater…” Juliana said. “We’ll have to swim down there.”

“About that…” Kieran said. “I can’t swim… Do you think Koraidon can help us out?”

“Well…” Juliana scratched her chin. “I don’t know if Koraidon can dive. I mean… it can swim-”

She was interrupted by the ground shaking almost similar to an earthquake, scaring Kieran. When the shaking ended, a Milotic sprang out of the water and attacked them. Kieran sent out his Dipplin while Juliana sent out Arboliva. Dipplin’s ability, Supersweet Syrup, helped the battle last shorter because Juliana’s Arboliva’s Energy Ball got the 30% defense drop.

After Milotic was defeated, it dropped a Crystal Cluster. Kieran picked up the Crystal Cluster.

“Wowzers.” Kieran chirped. “An actual Crystal Cluster. It’s so shiny.”

“Now we can use it to fix Ogerpon’s mask!” Juliana said. “Let’s get-”

“Hello, Juliana! Kieran!” Briar said as she arrived at the Crystal Pool.

“Miss Briar?” Kieran was confused. “What are you doing here? You don’t have Pokémon of your own.”

“Well, I came here to study the connection between the Crystal Pool and Terastal Energy.” The Blueberry Teacher asked. “Terastal Energy comes from mysterious crystals and is the source of the aura that comes to the Tera Orb. Perhaps the Crystal Pool could be connected to the Great Crater of Paldea and Terapagos. Or perhaps these Tera Crystals grew after a certain event in Paldea happened.”

“Uuuuuuuum…” Kieran and Juliana said in unison.

“Oh, apologies.” Briar gasped. “Must have been thinking out loud. By the way, I heard you’re the first pair who completed the assignment. Congratulations.”

“Thank you, Miss Briar.” Kieran smiled. “Is there anything you want us to do?”

“There is no need to worry, you two.” Briar giggled. “Feel free to explore Kitakami. Maybe play some Ogre Oustin so you can get rewards.”

“Alright.” Juliana said.

Briar then left as Juliana and Kieran sighed a breath of relief.

“That was close…” Kieran said. “By the way, Miss Briar is my Sis’ homeroom teacher.”

“I see.” Juliana said.

“Anyway, let’s go back to my house. We already got the Crystal Cluster. We can now fix Ogerpon’s mask.” Kieran jumped up and down in joy like he was a little kid since he was so happy.

The two of them returned to Kieran’s house. When they arrived, Yukito had a saddened expression.

“Kieran… Juliana… I’m sorry…” He said.

“Grandpa?” Kieran’s expression turned to worry. “What’s wrong…?”

“Carmine… she stole the Teal Mask.” Yukito shook his head.

“What?!” Juliana shouted.

“She took it to Loyalty Plaza…” That was all Yukito could say before he went back home.

“This is bad…” Kieran shook his head. “There is no way Sis would know of the story of Ogerpon and the Loyal Three… unless… did you tell her, Juliana?!”

“Of course not.” Juliana shook her head. “I kept my word.”

“Sorry…” Kieran sighed. “I kind of panicked. Anyway… Let’s go to Loyalty Plaza and try to talk some sense to my Sis!”

The two of them ran off to Loyalty Plaza. When they arrived, Carmine growled as she held to the Teal Mask.

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (12)

“You came… you liars…” She hissed.

“Sis, please…” Kieran shook his head. “You don’t have to do this… we were planning to tell you when the time was-”

“You didn’t tell me, anyway!” Carmine shouted. “You lied to my face and went on your way after completing the assignment!”

“Stop this, Carmine.” Juliana said. “You’re hurting yourself.”

“Liar! You’re a terrible liar!” Carmine screamed “You used your fake kindness to lure Kieran to a trap! You had him go to the Dreaded Den with you during the Festival of Masks!”

“How do you-?” Juliana was going to speak when Kieran interrupted her.

“Sis, please listen to yourself.” He started. “It was me who suggested we go to the Dreaded Den. And I should be responsible. Please, don’t blame Juliana for a decision I made…”

Silence occurred. Carmine growled and took out her Pokéball.

“Juliana. Battle me.” She hissed. “If you win, I will give you the mask. If I win, you leave Kitakami.”

“Sis, what-?” Kieran shook his head as Juliana took out her Kilowatrel’s Pokéball.

“I’ll battle you, Carmine.” Juliana said.

Carmine had swapped her Mightyena and Mienfoo with a White Striped Basculin and a Mienfoo while she evolved her Vulpix into Ninetales and upgraded her Morpeko and Sinistcha. But it was all for nothing. Carmine still lost to Juliana. She screamed in rage, went towards the Loyal Three Monument and punched it, her hand surrounded by a Malignant Toxic aura, a sign that the Mochi she ate is slowly taking effect. She rubbed her gloved hand as the Loyal Three Monument was made of stone. She turned to Juliana and gave her the Teal Mask.

“Here. I promised.” She said. “Go enjoy your mask. I’m going home.” She then walked away.

“Sis! Wait!” Kieran called out to his sister again, but the results were the same as last time. “I’ve never seen or heard her like this… could this be… ‘teenage angst’?”

“Why Teenage angst?” Juliana tilted her head in confusion.

“According to Grandma, when you reach a certain age, your behavior changes.” Kieran said. “Well, we got the Teal Mask and the Crystal Cluster… now we can-”

The area started to quake. Juliana and Kieran turn to see that the Loyal Three Monument is shaking badly. Then a purple explosion occurs, with the two kids covering their eyes. Once it was all over, the Monument became rubble and in its place were three Pokémon with the appearance of a dog, a monkey and a pheasant.

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (13)

“What is going on…?” Kieran asked with a scared expression.

“Grrrrfic!” The dog Pokémon growled.

“Mmkay!” The Monkey Pokémon mused.

“Yip-ip-ippy.” The pheasant Pokémon said.

The three Pokémon whispered to each other about something.

“What are they doing?” Juliana asked.

The three Pokémon yelled at the duo and ran off, or flew off in the Pheasant Pokémon’s case, headed off to Kitakami Hall.

“What was that?” Kieran shook his head in disbelief. “What is going on?!”

“No way…” Juliana shook her head in horror. “Those three… are they… the Loyal Three? Okidogi, Munkidori and Feazndipiti?”

“No way, really?!” Kieran’s horror grew. “Aw man, this is not gonna end well…” He then noticed something. “Wait… they’re headed to Kitakami Hall!!”

“Why would they-?” Juliana realized something. “Oh no. The other Three Masks!”

“Let’s go try to stop them!” Kieran shouted.

Then they ran off to Kitakami Hall to solve another Problem.

Chapter Text

Juliana and Kieran ran towards Kitakami Hall, where the caretaker and the other villagers were talking and laughing.

“Mister Caretaker!” Juliana called the caretaker.

“Ah, Juliana! Kieran!” The caretaker smiled. “You missed the grand event!”

“There is no time to stand idle!” Kieran said. “Where are the Jerky Three?!”

“Now, now, Kieran!” The caretaker patted Kieran’s head. “They are called the Loyal Three. Surely someone who loves the ogre would not understand. Anyway, our Heroic Loyal Three came to our presence and we gave them back the masks that rightfully belong to them.”

“You… gave them the masks?” Kieran’s worry turned to anger.

“And as our ancestors would do, we fed them our Kitakami Mochi.” The caretaker continued.

“And you fed them?!” Kieran erupted.

“And now they are headed to the Dreaded Den to finish off that no good ogre!” The caretaker continued.

“The Loyal Three are the best!” A woman laughed.

“That scary ogre will be gone for good.” A man chuckled.

Kieran grabbed Juliana and took her to the stairs that lead to Oni Mountain.

“The masks belong to Ogerpon, not them.” Kieran calmed down. “We need to stop them.”

“I agree.” Juliana nodded. “What’s the plan?”

“I’ll take the Teal Mask and the Crystal Cluster back to Grandpa so he can fix the former.” Kieran said. “You can go save Ogerpon from these jerks.”

“Alright.” Juliana nodded as she gave the Teal Mask and the Crystal Cluster to Kieran. “Let’s do this.”

Kieran made his way back home while Juliana ran towards the Dreaded Den.

Once Juliana arrived, the Loyal Three were cornering Ogerpon, who was maskless because she dropped the Teal Mask at the Festival of Mask. Ogerpon was chirping for help as the three Pokémon were about to attack her.

“Hey!” Juliana called out to the Loyal Three. “You won’t lay a finger on Ogerpon!”

The Loyal Three talked amongst themselves and Munkidori decided to face Juliana in battle. Juliana looked at the information she could gather from Munkidori in the Pokédex App on her Rotom Phone and saw that he was Poison-Psychic. She sent out Annihalape and had him use Shadow Punch due to Ghost being strong against Psychic.

Once Munkidori was defeated, Okidogi and Fezandipiti teamed up with him to corner Juliana.

What?! ” Juliana thought to herself. “ A three on one?! This is so unfair!

“Hey!” Kieran shouted as he and Carmine arrived. “Don’t you dare hurt Ogerpon! Or we’ll make you regret coming back to life!”

The Loyal Three talked amongst themselves again and ran off, with Carmine looking at them in silence.

“What the-?!” Kieran turned around. “Hey! Come back here! Where do you think you’re going?!”

“Kieran, thanks for the save.” Juliana smiled. “I thought I was a goner.”

“Th-that’s what friends are for, right?” Kieran smiled before facing Ogerpon. “S-so that’s the ogre?! No way! I feel like I must be dreaming!”

“Hey, you two…” Carmine walked up to Juliana and her brother. “I’m sorry for the way I acted… I wasn’t thinking straight and-”

“Sis, I’m the one who should apologize.” Kieran shook his head. “I had said so many bad things to you and it made me very upset.”

“Kiki…” Carmine smiled before turning to Ogerpon. “Hey, Kiki… this is your idol… maybe you can give the Mask Back since Grandpa fixed it.”

“Are you sure?” Kieran asked, which Carmine responded with a nod. “Alright.” He went towards Ogerpon. “Here, Ogerpon… it’s your mask… we fixed it just for you.”

Ogerpon shook in fear since Kieran was a Kitakami local. The boy was crushed, but he nodded.

“It’s ok… I understand.” He said. “You can take your time… and I will too.”

The fear in Ogerpon grew away slowly once Kieran said those words and slowly approached him. Kieran was confused, but before he could say anything, Ogerpon touched the Teal Mask. He slowly gave the Mask back and Ogerpon put it back on. Ogerpon chirped in joy as she ran around Kieran and Juliana.

“It seems she’s growing attached to both of you.” Carmine smiled sadly.

“I’m surprised she grew on me.” Kieran said. “But… it makes me happy.”

“Alright, we need to get the masks back from the Loyal Three.” Juliana said.

“You’re right.” Kieran said. “As the first quest of the Mask Retrieval Squad, we need to gather information from the people since they love the Loyal Three.”

“Mask Retrieval Squad?” Juliana tried not to laugh at the name.

“Sorry, I’m not good with names.” Kieran shook his head. “Anyway, The Mask Retrieval Squad was created recently to support Ogerpon and help her out. The only members are you, me, Ogerpon and Sis.”

“Me too…” Carmine shook her head. “Are you sure, Kiki?”

“Of course!” Kieran smiled. “Come on, Squad! Let’s do this!”

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (14)

As they made their way back to Mossui Town, Juliana noticed that Ogerpon was following her and Kieran around. She couldn’t help but smile and pat Ogerpon on the head. However, when they arrived at Mossui Town, Ogerpon stopped walking.

“Huh?” Juliana turned around. “What’s wrong?”

“It seems that Ogerpon is too afraid to go back to town…” Kieran said. “Considering what happened in the past, I don’t blame it.”

“Alright, Ogerpon.” Carmine smiled at Ogerpon. “Stay here until we come back from the town, ok?”

Ogerpon looked at Carmine in confusion.

“Is that… a no?” Carmine asked.

“Let me try.” Juliana went to Ogerpon. “Hello, Ogerpon, can you please wait here until we finish?”

“Pon! Ponio!” Ogerpon chirped.

“It looks like it understood that.” Kieran smiled.

“What was wrong with what I said?!” Carmine growled.

The three of them went to talk to the townsfolk for clues. Well… Juliana went around getting clues since Kieran was too shy to talk to anyone while Carmine was avoiding any of Juliana’s classmates. A few minutes later, they returned to where Ogerpon was standing.

“Did you get anything?” Kieran looked at Juliana and Carmine.

“I got the location of all three of them.” Juliana said. “Okidogi is in the Paradise Barrens, Munkidori is at the Wistful Fields and Fezandipiti is at the Infernal Pass, near the Chilling Waterhead. Their locations are marked on my Rotom Phone.”

“That’s wonderful!” Kieran smiled. “We got the information we need! Alright, Mask Retrieval Squad! Let’s go!”

“I’m not going.” Carmine turned around.

“Why not, Sis?” Kieran gasped. “You’re a very good asset to the team.”

“I… I have to go.” Carmine said. “I have things to do.”

She ran off towards Mossui Town. Kieran, Juliana and Ogerpon only watched as she was out of sight.

“Sis…” Kieran said.

“I wish she could help us.” Juliana shook her head. “But there is no time to waste. Let’s go get the masks back.”

“You’re right.” Kieran nodded.

Carmine watched from Peachy’s as Kieran, Juliana and Ogerpon ran towards the locations of the Loyal Three. She growled as her cover was blown when she went to Loyalty Plaza. Pecharunt went to her and sympathetically patted her on the shoulder with its chain.

“I know..” Carmine sighed. “If I could do anything, I would be a double agent.”

Pecharunt gave her an idea and whispered something to her ear.

“You want me to continue being the double agent?” Carmine gasped. Pecharunt responded with a nod. “And once this is all over, you want me to find your friends… I see. I will do what I can.”

Pecharunt flew away and Carmine took a deep breath as she did what she was originally going to do… tell everyone that the story between Ogerpon and the Loyal Three was completely wrong.

At the same time, Juliana and Kieran were fighting each member of the Loyal Three. Much to their surprise, the three of them transformed into titans and had gained a stat boost thanks to the Kitakami Mochi. Juliana got information about Okidogi and Fezandipiti from the Pokédex App and learned that Okidogi was Poison-Fighting and Fezandipiti was Poison-Fairy. The battles were not the hard part thanks to Ogerpon cheering for them. The hard part was that Fezandipiti made Juliana and Kieran chase him across the Chilling Waterbed. And in the end, they retrieved the remaining three masks for Ogerpon. Okidogi was holding the Cornerstone Mask, Munkidori was holding the Wellspring Mask and Fezandipiti was holding the Hearthflame Mask. Ogerpon also grew closer to Juliana and Kieran, the latter trying hard not to squeal.

Their celebration was interrupted when Carmine ran to them as they got the last mask.

“Juliana!” Carmine said. “Kiki! Come with me to Mossui Town! And bring Ogerpon with you.”

“Sis, what are you planning?” Kieran said with concern in his voice.

“No time to talk.” Carmine shook her head. “Come with me.”

Juliana and Kieran had no choice but to follow Carmine to Mossui Town with Ogerpon behind her. Ogerpon was scared but Carmine reassured her. As the four of them entered Mossui Town, fearing the worst, they were instead greeted by every villager apologizing to Ogerpon for putting her in the wrong. According to Yukito, Carmine was spreading the truth around town and he tried to calm her down. He was relieved that all the work Carmine did was well done.

Not only that, the caretaker said that Ogerpon is always welcome to Mossui Town anytime and that she doesn’t have to be afraid.

Kieran was more than happy that his sister did something so risky yet it worked while Carmine looked upset that she feels like she is failing something or someone.

It was time to take Ogerpon back home to the Dreaded Den.

“This is where we say goodbye, Ogerpon.” Kieran said. “But don’t worry. We will visit each other any time.”

Ogerpon looked around and went to Juliana instead.

“Ponio! Ponio!” Ogerpon chirped.

“It looks like… Ogerpon wants to be part of your party.” Kieran said.

“Wait…” Juliana shook her head. “But… isn’t it your dream to travel with Ogerpon?”

“I got to travel around Kitakami with Ogerpon, yes.” Kieran nodded. “But I trust that you are a better partner for Ogerpon than me.”

“Kieran… I-”

“Hold it.” Carmine interrupted. “Juliana. Battle me. Winner gets Ogerpon.”

“Carmine, are you serious?!” Juliana shook her head.

“Sis… please reconsider…” Kieran went to his sister. “Don’t you think you are being a bit brash? Consider my feelings on this matter… Consider Ogerpon’s feelings.”

Silence occurred as it started to rain.

“I want to battle.” Carmine growled.

“Very well…” Juliana sighed. “Let’s do this.”

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (15)

Carmine had evolved her Mienfoo and White Striped to a Mienshao and Male Basculegion and her Ninetales had been replaced with Chandelure, but she still remained with Morpeko and Sinistcha. She would never leave Sinistcha behind and Morpeko has a very useful ability.

In the end, Carmine still lost to Juliana and her Annihalape. The rain soaking them as Carmine’s hair was still flaring up during the battle. She muttered “I should have known…” before stepping aside as Kieran healed Juliana’s Pokémon so the latter could fight Ogerpon in the rain.

As the battle started, Ogerpon swapped her mask to the Hearthflame Mask and much to everyone’s surprise, Terastalized her Hearthflame Mask and Embody Aspect raised her attack.

“No way!” Kieran’s eyes beamed in joy. “Ogerpon Terastalized her mask! So cool!”

Juliana had to think of a strategy for every mask Ogerpon wore. She used a Newly Caught Milotic for the Hearthflame Mask, Arboliva for the Wellspring Mask, Walking Wake for the Cornerstone Mask and her first Pokémon Skeledirge for the Teal Mask.

After the Teal Mask shattered, Ogerpon had run out of energy.

“Ogerpon can’t fight anymore!” Kieran cheered. “Now’s your chance! Go catch her with a Pokéball!”

Juliana nodded and took out a Friend Ball. She threw the Friend Ball at Ogerpon and as she was sealed inside, the Friend Ball fell to the ground, twirled three times and clicked.

Juliana’s Rotom Phone rang and opened the Pokédex App.

“Ogerpon’s Data has been added to the Pokédex.” The Rotom Phone said. “Ogerpon. The Mask Pokémon. Teal Mask form. The Pokémon’s type changes based on the masks it wears. It confounds its enemy with nimble moves.”

Juliana then saw the other three masks. She knew that Ogerpon was lending them to her and picked them up.

“Congratulations.” Carmine said as she walked to Juliana, her attitude wasn’t so genuine.

“Thank you, Carmine.” Juliana smiled. “I’ll take good care of Ogerpon.”

Carmine turned around.

“You’ll never be like me.” She growled. “Never… ever…”

The black and scarlet haired girl then ran back home.

“Sis…” Kieran said. “I’ve never seen her like this until now.”

“I know…” Juliana said. “Well… Let’s go back.”

“Yeah…” Kieran nodded.

At night, Carmine was walking to Peachy’s at night. Pecharunt went to her.

“I’m sorry…” Carmine sighed. “I failed.”

Instead of Berating her, Pecharunt smiled at her and led her to the rubble of the Loyal Three monument. There, Okidogi, Munkidori and Fezandipiti were waiting for them.

“You three.” Carmine gasped. “The Loyal Three… so you came for me after all.”

“Grrrrific.” Okidogi barked.

“Mmmkay.” Munkidori mused.

“Yip-ip-ippy.” Fezandipiti nodded.

“Pecha-Pecha” Pecharunt said.

“Alright…” Carmine said. “I will do this. I will be part of your group.”

She held out four Pokéballs and got Okidogi, Munkidori, Fezandipiti and Pecharunt in them. The Four Pokéballs twirled three times and clicked.

She smiled darkly and returned home without being noticed, hiding away in her room.

The next morning, Juliana went to the Rubble of the Loyal Three Monument where Kieran was waiting for him. She almost couldn’t recognize Kieran because he wasn’t wearing his jacket which covered his blue shirt.

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (16)

“Kieran?” Juliana gasped.

“Hello, Juliana.” Kieran waved. “I know this is confusing, but I decided to… do a change of attire because you gave me so much confidence.”

“Why did you need me here?” Juliana asked.

“Two things…” Kieran said. “The first thing is that… after what happened, Sis decided to shut herself in her room and refused to get out… she didn’t even go to dinner, especially when Grandpa, Grandma and I called her many times… I feel like this is all my fault.”

“Kieran, don’t blame yourself.” Juliana shook her head. “We did all we could.”

“You’re right.” Kieran nodded. “Also… I want to battle… with you only using Ogerpon.”

“Just Ogerpon?” Juliana added. “Alright… This is my first time only using one Pokémon ever since I got Fuecoco, but alright.”

Juliana had equipped the Hearthflame mask on Ogerpon, despite the fact that Kieran evolved his Gligar to Gliscor, caught a Noctowl and powered up his Furret, Yanmega, Poliwrath and Dipplin.

Even though she did struggle thanks to Gliscor and Poliwrath, she still won. Kieran smiled as he recalled Dipplin.

“Wowzers.” Kieran said. “You really are a good battler, Juliana. You could be a good candidate for Blueberry Academy. There is… something I want to-”

He was interrupted by Briar calling Juliana’s Rotom Phone about her waiting for Juliana and Kieran at the entrance of the Community Center alongside Josue, Emanuel, Paloma, the Caretaker and Carmine, unaware that Carmine locked herself in her room.

The two of them headed off to the Community center, where everyone mentioned except Carmine is waiting for them.

“Good morning, everyone!” The Caretaker said with a cheerful tone. “Did you all enjoy your time in Kitakami?”

“Of course!” Josue said.

“It was so much fun!” Paloma cheered.

“I can’t wait to go back!” Emanuel said.

“I’m happy you enjoyed the assignment.” Briar said. “Unfortunately, I bring some sad news… Carmine, Kieran and I have to return to Blueberry Academy.”

“Really?” Paloma was saddened by the news.

“Apparently, we got some news regarding the Great Crater, but it will not be said.” Briar said. “Well, Kieran, do you have something to tell your classmates?”

“Yes, I have something to say.” Kieran stepped infront of Briar. “Unfortunately, my Sis couldn’t be here, so it’s just me. As you all know, Sis and I were born and raised here. Sis… hates outsiders.”

“Yikes.” The Paldean students shuddered.

“She believed that our home would become a tourist attraction, which is why she distanced herself from tourists.” Kieran continued. “But after studying alongside all of you for this Field Trip, I saw that you were actually kind and not as bad as Sis thought you would be. You really love to study and battle. I am happy to have met you all.” He turned to Juliana. “Especially you, Juliana.”

“I’m happy to have met you too, Kieran…” Juliana smiled.

“Oh!” Kieran remembered. “I have to go pack my things! And this isn’t goodbye! We will meet again! Remember to write me some letters!”

With that, Kieran smiled before running back home.

Kieran is such a sweet kid. ” Juliana thought to herself.

“Well, everyone… what do you have to say to the caretaker who watched over all of you this entire trip?” Briar smiled at the students.

“Thank you for everything!” Juliana, Paloma, Emanuel and Josue said.

Meanwhile, Carmine was clenching her hair furiously.

“I have to get stronger!” She repeated the phrase over and over.

She was then interrupted by a boy with the same hair and eye color as Juliana. A mysterious turtle Pokémon was with him.

“Who are you?!” She hissed.

“There is no need to be afraid.” The boy smiled. “I am here to help. My name is Florian, and this is my partner Terapagos. Join my side and I will give you and your Pokémon strength.”

Carmine smiled darkly, meaning she accepted the deal. She then tied her hair in a ponytail with a headband.

“Just you wait… Juliana.”

Chapter Text

CARMINE

Time has passed since that wretched outsider has ruined my life. She took Kiki away from me. She made that ogre the hero and the Loyal Three the villains. I don’t need her. I don’t need Kiki. We stopped talking ever since we returned to Blueberry Academy from Kitakami. No. I stopped talking to Kiki. He kept calling me, but I ignored him. He just wants to say that this outsider, Juliana, is a friend, but I know what she did.

I protected Kiki from harm, I always kept him safe, and I taught him all he knows, but in the end, he lied to me about the story Grandpa told him, he sided with that ogre and defeated the Loyal Three. He befriended that outsider. All because Grandfather told him to. Kiki… Grandfather… Grandmother… the citizens of Mossui… they were all babying that outsider… that wretched girl.

My head was starting to hurt. Was it something I ate? No. It must be my imagination. I went to my dorm to strategize… My journey for vengeance has begun.

I took some advice from this boy named Florian on how I can become stronger without using Pecharunt, Okidogi, Munkidori and Fezandipiti in battle. They were my bodyguards and they didn’t plan on showing how strong they are. I kept Morpeko and Sinistcha while I kept Mightyena, Ninetales, Swadloon, Mienshao and Basculegion in my room in Blueberry Academy. My Pokémon are the only friends I need. I don’t need any human friends except for Florian… and maybe Amarys.

I caught some new Pokémon. A Hatterene in Kitakami and A Kingdra, a Metagross and a Venasaur at the Terarium. I also took note on how each Elite Trial worked. Gladys, Crispin, Amarys and Lacey were no pushovers. They are strong, but not strong enough. That lazy bozo Drayton is my target. I need to make sure he learns his spot.

My first challenge was Crispin. His trial was very easy, it was to make a super spicy sandwich, as for his team, Kingdra dealt with all of them with ease, it even dispelled Talonflame's Sunny Day with Rain Dance. The only Pokémon Kingdra didn’t knock out was Exeggutor, which Venasaur took care of with its Poison Type moves.

Next off was Gladys. Poor Gladys, she knew she wasn’t ready, but I didn’t care. She came to study just so she can be a perfect little Gym Trainer for her Gym Leader in Galar, but the Terarium doesn’t have enough Grass Types, which is why she is stuck with a Spring Form Sawsbuck, a Vileplume, an Abomasnow, a Meganium, a Venomoth and poor Comfey as her Tera Pokémon. She is the only one I felt pity for since Terastalization is new to her and she is used to Dynamaxing Pokémon. Oh, and her trial was to herd each Deerling by season.

Third was Amarys. Her trial was the Flying Time Trials. I didn’t have any good fliers, so I was stuck with Metagross. I passed the trial on the first try, which is a first for Blueberry Academy. Sinistcha and Kingdra handled her Pokémon, especially her Empoleon and Metagross with ease.

Last, but not least, before I face Drayton, was Lacey. Just like how Gladys is the only Grass type representative to the Pokémon League, Lacey is the only Fairy type representative. But are you serious? A quiz as an Elite Trial? Lacey, you are embarrassing yourself. Not even your team was a match for my Metagross.

Finally, It was time. Time to face that lazy annoying toothpaste-haired bozo. But before I could begin, Kiki ran to me.

“Sis! I heard from Miss Briar that you defeated the BB League Elite Four and are now about to face Drayton for the title of BB League Champion! Congratulations! And good luck!”

His words felt genuine, but I didn’t say anything. I just smiled. I cannot bring myself to hurt Kiki. He is not to blame for what happened.

Drayton’s team was only dragon types… except for Sceptile. Was he inspired by the mega evolution? Nah. It can’t be. Anyway, unlike the Elite Four, he was giving it his all. My only counters to his dragons were Kingdra and Hatterene.

The battle was over. I won. I smiled to myself. I have become the BB League Champion.

“Congratulations, Carmine.” That bozo came to me. “I look forward to working alongside you as the representative of the League Club.”

“This was a good match.” I said. “Too bad about the outcome… Ex-Champion.”

I smiled even more as I erased that annoying smirk from that bozo’s face. Everyone looked at me as I became a monster. How delightful. No one should underestimate me.

“Alright, everyone!” I faced every student. “From today onwards, you will start training every day! No slacking!”

I walked off to my League Club room, so I could make some changes, when Gladys came to me.

“Hello, Carmine.” She said. “I would like to resign as a member of the Elite Four. I understand Crispin should be disqualified, but he deserves his spot while I don’t. I only came to my position due to my connections with Sir Milo.”

I sighed. Gladys was as honest as ever. As I said, there aren’t enough Grass types in the Terarium.

“Very well.” I said. “I accept your resignation. From today onwards, you will just be just an average member of the League Club. Do not let me down and continue your training.”

“Thank you, Carmine.” Gladys bowed. “I’ll do all I can.”

With that, she left. I scowled. I was planning to eliminate Lacey because she wasn’t taking her training very seriously, but according to the Club Rules, Crispin should be eliminated, but they both have been spared by Gladys’ resignation as an Elite Four Member.

I’ve isolated myself from everyone, including Kiki. I stopped talking to everyone. I only show myself to see if these students are doing their training or not. I would scold them at times if they weren’t training.

Pecharunt flew to me. It chirped, knowing I would be lonely. I embraced it.

“You won’t leave me alone, will you Pecharunt?” I whispered sweetly. “The same goes to Okidogi, Munkidori and Fezandipiti, right?”

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (18)

“Pecha-Pecharun!” Pecharunt chirped.

I smiled. I was relieved that my Pokémon were more Loyal than these fools.

KIERAN

Time has passed since I returned to Blueberry Academy from Kitakami. However, Sis stopped talking to me when we returned. I try to say literally anything, but she just ignores me. What did I do wrong? Why are you ignoring me, sis?

The situation got worse as I had nightmares and I never slept well for three nights in a row. Lacey and Gladys were the first to notice. I was classmates with Gladys, and Crispin, and Lacey took me in as her mentee for Pokémon related topics since Sis wasn’t talking to me. I’m glad they’re taking care of me

“Hey, Kieran?” Lacey went to me. “Are you ok? You don’t look so good.”

“Lacey… Gladys…” I couldn’t hold back my tears. “I’m so sorry! I’m such a burden to the both of you!”

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (19)

“Don’t say such a thing!” Lacey crossed her hands to an X. “We’re Club Members! We’re always here for you!”

“And as your classmate, I have the right to worry about you.” Gladys patted me on my left shoulder.

I dried the tears off my eyes as I heard Lacey and Gladys’ words of comfort.

“Lacey… Gladys… thank you.” I sobbed a little.

“I’m always happy to help.” Lacey smiled.

“I suggest you go traveling.” Gladys said. “Maybe this will ease your mind. I recommend going to my home region of Galar.”

I took Gladys’ advice and decided to go traveling. Before I went to pack my stuff, I took a small visit to Sis’ dorm.

“Hey, sis…” I said. “I’ll be traveling around regions. I’ll be leaving tomorrow.”

As usual, I got no response. She would give me a smile, but I still got no word from her. I miss hearing her voice.

For the first three days, I visited many regions with Miss Briar since she was still investigating the “Great Crater of Paldea” I have been hearing from her ever since Juliana and I ran into her at the Crystal Pool.

I forgot to mention. I still write letters to Juliana since I don’t own a Rotom Phone of my own. I sometimes felt like taking Sis’ Rotom Phone since she barely uses it anymore aside from looking at certain Pokémon’s moves.

As I came back, I heard that Sis was fighting her way through the League Club. It made me so happy that I decided to go to her to congratulate her.

“Sis! I heard from Miss Briar that you defeated the BB League Elite Four and are now about to face Drayton for the title of BB League Champion! Congratulations! And good luck!”

But she just smiled at me and went to the battle court at the entrance of the Academy. I was hoping we would go back on speaking terms, but it was wishful thinking.

I watched in glee as Sis and Drayton fought each other. I always loved Pokémon battles, be it watching them or participating in them. That love for battles and Pokémon got me to enroll in Blueberry Academy. I had even caught myself some Pokémon in both Blueberry Academy and Across the world.

I was so distracted, I had not noticed that Sis defeated Drayton.

“Congratulations, Carmine.” Drayton went to shake Sis’ hand. “I look forward to working alongside you as the representative of the League Club.”

Sis smiled to herself as she spoke the words that changed the entirety of Blueberry Academy completely.

“This was a good match. Too bad about the outcome… Ex-Champion.”

Everything became silent. The cheers had dried off as if terror was spreading throughout the court. No one could believe what she said. Even Drayton’s smile disappeared as Sis spoke these words to add insult to injury.

She then turned to every student.

“Alright, everyone! From today onwards, you will start training every day! No slacking!”

As I looked at Sis’ eyes, her pupils were purple and she had a toxic expression in her. I then ran away to my room, unable to hear Lacey and Gladys’ calls. I then lay down on my bed as I screamed and cried. My sister had completely changed and my school was starting to change.

My cries were interrupted by a knock on the door. I dried my tears and drank some water (I did cry a lot) before I went to my door and opened it. I was expecting either Lacey or Gladys since they worry about me, or Miss Briar since she’s a teacher, but I was not expecting Cyrano, the Academy’s DIRECTOR to be standing at my doorstep.

“D-Director Cyrano?!” I couldn’t hide my surprise.

“Hello, young Kieran.” The director smiled at me. “Would ya mind coming to Paldea’s Academy with me? I have a very special surprise for yer.”

“Um… of course!” I nodded. “I’ll get ready.”

Wowzers. I was going to Paldea. I cannot believe it. And the Director had a surprise for me? I could not hold my excitement. It felt like I had my emotions played with today.

JULIANA

Time has passed ever since I returned to Paldea from Kitakami. I had a busy schedule for the past few days. I completed the Pokédex for Kitakami, I fought a lot of Tera Raids for Professor Jacq’s research, I helped my mom with housework when I didn’t have class, I trained with Nemona so I could keep up my champion status, I explored the Treasures of Paldea with Arven and I surveyed the Team Star camps with Penny to make sure the Team Star Bosses are keeping up with the STCs started by Director Clavell.

Speaking of Director Clavell, my Rotom Phone rang and he had called me for something. I was in Kitakami and it was raining, so I put my Rotom Phone under my umbrella.

“Hello, is this Miss Juliana’s Phone number?” Director Clavell asked.

“Yes, Director.” I answered. “This is Juliana. Did you need something?”

“Thank goodness. I thought I caught the wrong number.” Director Clavell sighed before clearing his throat. “Anyway… Miss Julinana, it seems that you have been chosen for our Exchange Program for one of our partner Academies, Blueberry Academy of Unova. Would you mind meeting me and two of our guests at my office at Naranja Academy? I’d be more than pleased.”

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (20)

As the Director hung up the call, my jaw dropped. I could not believe that I was chosen for the Exchange Program three months into my studies at Naranja Academy. I regained my calm and went to Kitakami Road, where I would take my flight back home.

Notes:

1. Pecharunt's shelled form was easier to draw since it's literally a peach.

2. If AO3 had word colors, Carmine's dialouge text would be purple due to the influence of the mochi on her in Chapter 6.

3. Why aren't there anymore Grass type Pokémon in the Terarium besides Deerping, Sawsbuck, Snover, Abomasnow, Oddish, Gloom, Vileplume, Bellossom, Cottonee, Whimsicott and the starters?

Chapter 10: Chapter 9: Blueberry Academy

Chapter Text

Juliana arrived at Paldea after a long flight from Kitakami. Her destination was Mesagoza, but the plane landed in Levincia. She rode on Koraidon since the Paldean Tauros wouldn’t stop chasing after her if she went by foot.

Finally, she arrived to Naranja Academy, but when she arrived to the entrance hall, she saw a man in white.

“Well, ya must be Juliana, is that correct, lassy?” The man said.

“Yes, I am Juliana.” Juliana nodded. “And you might be…?”

“Why, my name is Cyrano!” The man bowed. “I am the Director of Blueberry Academy.”

“Wait… THE director?!” Juliana gasped.

“Why, of course!” Cyrano chuckled. “And there is also someone who wishes to see you.” He looked behind him. “Come on out, boy. Don’t be shy.”

A familiar black and purple hair popped out from behind Cyrano as shy yellow eyes stared in the distance. The boy, wearing a blue shirt and white shorts gasped as he covered his mouth in surprise.

“J-Juliana?!” He nearly screamed as he called out her name.

“Wait… Kieran?!” Juliana gasped. “I thought-!”

“Well, color me surprised!” Cyrano chuckled. “Ya actually do know the student chosen for our exchange program, Kieran, my boy.”

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (21)

“E-Exchange Program?!” Kieran shook his head. “Wh-why d-didn’t you say anything sooner, Director?!”

“Well, who am I to spoil the surprise?” Cyrano smiled.

“What is this commotion about?” Director Clavell groaned as he entered the scene.

“Velly, my old friend!” Cyrano smiled. “Just in time for our fateful reunion!”

“How many times do I have to tell you not to call me that in public, Cyrano?” The Naranja Director sighed. “And we were supposed to meet at my office and discuss the matter in private with Miss Juliana.”

“We were?” Cyrano took off his Fedora to scratch his head. “That must have flown off my mind.”

The response from the Blueberry Director caused Kieran to sigh in dismay since the former is very forgetful.

“I’m so sorry, Juliana…” He said. “This wasn’t what you thought would happen.”

“No, it’s ok.” Juliana said. “Anyway, I did not expect you to come as well, it was a lovely surprise.”

“R-really?” Kieran smiled. “I’m so happy.”

Director Clavell turned to Kieran.

“You must be Master Kieran, is that correct?” He asked.

“Y-yes sir.” The blueberry student nodded. “I was paired with Juliana for the school trip.”

“Interesting.” Clavell smiled. “It relieves me to see that Miss Juliana has made some friends on the school trip.” He cleared his throat. “As we were saying, Miss Juliana, Director Cyrano and I decided to choose you for our exchange program between Naranja and Blueberry Academy.”

“Yer gonna like Blueberry Academy.” Cyrano smirked. “It dedicates itself to battles and classes related to Pokémon. Kieran here is one of our students.”

Kieran only nods.

“Let us know when ya are ready for our flight!” Cyrano said.

In just five minutes, Juliana bought some items at the Pokémarts and the Delibird Presents found at Mesagoza and Levincia. Soon after she got ready, she, Cyrano and Kieran boarded their plane to Blueberry Academy. During the flight, Juliana couldn’t stop playing with the braid in her hair.

“Are you excited?” Kieran asked her.

“Yeah.” Juliana answered. “I’m also kind of nervous because I have never been to another academy. And I’ve only heard of Blueberry Academy from you, Miss Briar and your sister.”

Before Kieran could say anything, the plane landed near an ocean dock and when they came out of the plane, Juliana could see a marvelous blue dome floating in the ocean.

“Oh… my… goodness…” She couldn’t hide her surprise upon the sight of the building.

“Behold! Blueberry Academy!” Cyrano said. “This is the pride and joy of every student who enrolls here! And this academy is also built in the ocean and most of it is underwater! Do you want to know why?”

“Well…” Juliana would answer until a pink haired girl arrived.

“It is because of a special plant that is only seen underwater.” The girl answered. “This plant helps develop natural resources or so I heard.”

“Well done, Lacey, my girl!” Cyrano turned to the girl. “Ya are smarter than the rest of us here!”

“I knew about this last year.” Lacey sighed before turning to Juliana. “Hello, there. You must be the student from Naranja Academy chosen for our exchange program right?”

“Of course.” Juliana smiled. “I am Juliana, I’m sure you heard from me from Kieran, right?”

“Why, of course!” Lacey clapped her hand.

“Lacey is one of my Clubmates.” Kieran said. “Even though she is a year above me, she helps me with homework and Pokémon. From what I heard, she is the daughter of a Gym Leader. Almost forgot, she is also a Member of the-”

“Y’all seem to be getting along very well, now!” Cyrano chuckled. “Very well, I must go, but first, let me give yer Pokédex App a lil’ upgrade.”

Cyrano sent the Blueberry Pokédex to the Pokédex App on Juliana’s Rotom Phone and left Lacey in charge of the tour.

“Director, wait!” Lacey tried to call the Director, but he had left. She turned to sigh. “My sincerest apologies, Juliana. The Director has a habit of leaving some chores to me.” She crosses her hands into an X. “And it’s nor right! Also, would you like to battle?”

“Oh. Of course.” Juliana said.

“In Blueberry Academy, all our battles are done in Double Battle Styles.” Kieran said. “You will like them.”

Juliana and Lacey got in place at the Battle Court of Blueberry Academy’s Entrance. Juliana sent out Skeledirge and Milotic while Lacey sent out Plusle and Minun. Lacey was planning to do her Plus-Minus strategy despite Plusle having Volt Absorb and Minun having Lightning Rod.

Because of Juliana’s battle prowess, she was able to defeat Lacey’s first two Pokémon and Excadrill.

“Goodness, you are a really good battler.” Lacey said. “Though I wish I could have seen you Terastalize.”

“Oh. Sorry.” Juliana shook her head.

“It’s ok.” Lacey said. “I didn’t want to pressure you. Oh. Also, we got you a set of uniforms for you to wear. Here you go.”

Juliana got the uniforms and came back wearing a white long-sleeved shirt, white shorts and blue boots.

“Wowzers.” Kieran smiled. “The uniform looks great on you.”

“I agree!” Lacey clapped her hand. “You will make yourself at home here! Come on! There’s something I want to show you!”

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (22)

The three of them descended the elevator to a dome-like structure filled with several biomes and many Pokémon.

“Behold! The Terarium!” Lacey said. “This is a place where Pokémon can live their lives happily and students can train and catch Pokémon!”

“There are four biomes you can travel to.” Kieran said. “A subtropical Savanna Biome, a breezy Coastal Biome, a craggy Canyon Biome and a freezing Polar Biome.”

“Which of these do you like?” Lacey asked.

“Well… the Coastal Biome is really impressive.” Juliana asked.

“You like the Coastal Biome?” Lacey felt happier with Juliana’s answer. “I love love love the Coastal Biome! It’s my favorite!”

“You’ll enjoy these biomes, Juliana.” Kieran said. “Oh no!” He then gasped. “I just remembered that I have class in the Polar Biome! I have to go! See you at the Central Plaza!”

“Speaking off, class is about to begin for us at the Coastal Biome.” Lacey said. “Come on, let’s go.”

Juliana attended her first Blueberry Class at the Coastal Biome, where the assignment was to catch an Alolan regional variant of a Pokémon like Exeggutor, Grimer, etc. She found a Grimer, caught it and then showed it to the teacher, where she got approval to finish the assignment. Soon after class, she was told of Blueberry Quests, or BBQs, by Lacey, where you have to do certain quests to get Blueberry Points, or BP.

She then rode Miraidon to Central Plaza, where Kieran was talking to a girl whose hair was decorated like construction nails.

“And that’s what has been happening…” Kieran said. “Do you know what has been causing Sis to change?”

“Unfortunately, I do not have the knowledge.” The girl shook her head before looking at her pocket watch. “It seems that there is no more time to converse. I will see you later, Kieran.”

“Alright…” He waved as the girl walked away. “Goodbye, Amarys.”

“Hey, Kieran.” Juliana walked up to him. “Who was that?”

“Oh.” Kieran turned around. “Hey, Juliana. Sorry about that. I was talking to a friend… well… I’m acquainted with her because she knows my Sis. Anyway… do you want to battle…? I want to show you how strong I’ve gotten.”

“Aright! And I have a small surprise for you.”

Juliana and Kieran went to the battle court at the Central Plaza, while Kieran sent out Yanmega and a Lapras he caught as part of his assignment at the Polar Biome, Juliana sent out Annihalape and Cornerstone Mask Ogerpon.

“Ogerpon!” Kieran’s eyes beamed with joy when he saw the ogre he spent time with in Kitakami. “I’m so happy to see you again! Did you miss me?!”

“Pon-pon!” Ogerpon chirped with joy when Kieran saw her.

The battle lasted long because while Juliana knew how Yanmega battled, she was new to facing Lapras, a Mantine he caught in Galar and his newly evolved Hydrapple.

“What is that Pokémon?” Juliana almost shouted when she saw Hydrapple.

“This is Hydrapple.” Kieran said. “I evolved Dipplin when I returned to Kitakami when I got the Technical Move for Dragon Cheer as a cheer up gift. Also… it’s time to Terastalize. Hydrapple!!”

Kieran charged up his newly gained Tera Orb and Terastalized his Hydrapple to a Dragon Type. Even with a five serpent Fickle Beam, it was no match for Ogerpon’s Cornerstone Mask Ivy Cudgel.

Kieran recalled Hydrapple after it was defeated and its Terastalization shattered.

“Aw man.” Kieran played with his hair. “I studied, caught and trained so many Pokémon yet I still lost. I’m not mad… I had so much fun.” His smile dropped. “Anyway, have you heard any word from my Sis?”

“No, I haven’t.” Juliana shook her head. “She didn’t call me ei-”

ARE YOU SERIOUS RIGHT NOW ?!” A shout can be heard from the Savanna Biome entrance to the Central Plaza. Juliana and Kieran hide near the battle court to see that Carmine was shaking her fists in anger as her hair flared and her purple-pupiled eyes glared at a League Club member who was trying to calm her down. “Was the assignment THAT DIFFICULT FOR YOU?!”

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (23)

“Wowzers…” Kieran shook his head. “Sis has become scarier lately.”

THAT’S Carmine?!” Juliana gasped.

“Shhhh!!” Kieran covered Juliana’s mouth. “Keep your voice down. We have to make sure she doesn’t hear us.”

“I gave you five days to train your Pokémon for our next battle and you have done NOTHING !!!” Carmine’s anger was growing. “You better give me a VALUABLE excuse or you will be punished!!”

“Forgive me, Carmine…” The student shook his head. “Things have been happening at home and I haven’t had the time to train, so-”

“Oh, so you’re fine with BEING WEAK FOREVER ?!” Carmine hissed. “If things are so bad at home, I’ll do you one favor. I’ll write YOUR RESIGNATION FROM THE CLUB for you. I don’t need WEAKLINGS WHO DON’T TAKE MY TRAINING SERIOUSLY. This is a waste of time. I’m leaving.”

She then walked out of the Central Plaza.

“Carmine!!” The student shouted as he followed her. “I’m sorry! Please! Give me another chance!”

“That was terrible to watch…” Juliana shook her head… “Are you sure that’s Carmine? She seems… more aggressive than when she was at Kitakami…”

“Unfortunately, that’s my Sis…” Kieran sighed. “She has been dedicating herself to training, so she changed the entire regimen of the League Club. She hasn’t slept for days and she only eats some… purple colored mochi…”

“Well, that’s a sight.” A young man with laid back eyes walked up to the both of them, causing Kieran to groan. “Well, if it isn’t Kieran and Kieran’s little friend.”

“What a surprise…” Kieran growled. “Just the annoying baka (idiot) I didn’t want to run into now of all times…”

“Come on, little K.” The young man scratched his head. “At least introduce me.”

“Don’t call me Little K in public…” Kieran facepalmed before turning to Juliana. “Anyway, Juliana, this is Drayton and. HE. IS. THE. WORST. He is the strongest student in all of Blueberry Academy… or should I say… he was the strongest student in all of Blueberry Academy. He means well, but-”

“Lovely intro. Thank you.” Drayton smiled.

“Drayton, this is Juliana.” Kieran continued. “Sis and I met her when we were chosen for the Joint Field Trip at Kitakami and-”

“What of Carmine?” Drayton faced Juliana. “Are you friends with her?”

“Yes, we are.” Juliana said, even though her friendship with Carmine was one sided since Juliana was sweet towards Carmine while Carmine hated her guts.

“Wonderful.” Drayton smiled. “I think this place is too public to speak, why don’t we move somewhere private, like the League Club? Come on, new friend. Little K.”

“Drayton, hold on!” Kieran was going to call Drayton out, but the young man had already left. “See? I told you he is the worst. He just does whatever he wants and avoids others’ opinions. Anyway… let’s follow him. We don’t want to keep him waiting, even though he doesn’t mind waiting…”

“Alright.” Juliana nodded. “What a way to start the exchange program.”

The both of them left the Terarium and took the elevator towards the League Club room.

Notes:

There were so many first time characters drawings like Cyrano and Lacey and it was difficult because I did not remember how Director Cyrano's outfit looks like and Lacey's hair and cardigan over her Uniform were complicated to draw with or without references.

Chapter 11: Chapter 10: Blueberry League

Summary:

Juliana is enrolled to the Blueberry League, meets the rest of the BB League Elite Four and reunites with Carmine

Chapter Text

Drayton, Juliana and Kieran enter a club with lots of League Related stuff.

“New friend, Little K.” Drayton said. “Welcome to the League Club.”

Juliana looked around.

“Dratyon, should we be here?” Kieran got nervous. “What if-?”

“Worried about Carmine?” Drayton pats Kieran’s head. “Don’t worry. She won’t come here. Now as we-”

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (24)

“Drayton!” A green haired girl walked up to Drayton. “There you are! You know she is looking for you.”

“I know, tell her to take her time, Gladys.” Drayton sighed.

“You know she is impatient.” The green haired girl crossed her arms before facing Juliana. “Oh. Forgive my intrusion. I did not notice you,”

“It’s ok.” Juliana said.

“This is Gladys.” Kieran introduced Gladys to Juliana. “She is a classmate of mine and also a member of the League Club.”

“Nice to meet you.” Gladys shook Juliana’s hand. “To explain, the League Club is the main epitome of the Blueberry League, or… BB League, and five of the strongest trainers are known as the BB League Champion and the BB League Elite Four.” She turns to Drayton. “And this… Human Slakoth… is one of them. So is Lacey, the girl who gave you the tour around the Academy.”

“And Amarys, the girl you saw with me earlier at the Central Plaza.” Kieran continued for Gladys.

“You know so much, Gladys.” Juliana said.

“Well…” Gladys fixed her rose hairpin. “I was a member of the BB League Elite Four, but I resigned since I believed I didn’t deserve my spot. I’m still a member of the League Club. The order of strength from weakest to strongest was Crispin, then me, then, Amarys, then Lacey and finally, Drayton. And now that Carmine became champion and I resigned as BB League Elite Four, the order, again from weakest to strongest, is Crispin, then Amarys, then Lacey, then Drayton and finally Carmine.”

“That’s all the explanation you need, new friend. Thanks, Gladys.” Drayton smiled, which made Gladys glare at him. “Now then, why don’t you and I have a little date at the cafeteria?”

“Drayton, are you serious?!” Kieran and Gladys shouted in unison.

“Of course, we can talk.” Juliana said, unaware of what’s to come for her.

“Good.” Drayton said. “Well, see you at the cafeteria.”

“Hold on, Drayton!” Kieran said as Drayton walked away.

“Not even Carmine can talk some sense into him.” Gladys sighed. “Apologies for that… Drayton is literally a human Slakoth, he is smart, but he just lazes around, and he also schemes something without telling anyone.”

“It’s alright.” Juliana smiled.

Poor girl… ” Gladys thought to herself. “ Her kindness will become her downfall… Carmine is gonna use that kindness for her own goals…

“Thank you for telling Juliana everything, Gladys.” Kieran smiled.

“Of course.” Gladys said. “I have a report to give now. I’ll see you soon. Oh. And… welcome to the League Club. Apparently, Drayton placed you in here as a trial member…”

Gladys left. Kieran felt like his concerns shouldn’t be told in public, so he took Juliana to her new dorm, which Juliana commented that it’s bluer than her room at Naranja academy.

“Well… it’s called Blueberry Academy mostly because of the blue.” Kieran giggled. “Anyway… there’s something I want to talk about… it’s about Drayton, and… about Sis.”

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (25)

“About Carmine?” Juliana asked.

Kieran’s smile dropped.

“When we returned to Blueberry Academy from the School Trip to Kitakami, Sis… changed.” He started. “Her… attitude became worse and she completely changed. She must have grown her hair or something because it’s now in a ponytail. As I said in the Terarium, she barely sleeps and all she eats is some purple colored Mochi. Now she became the BB League Champion and the only Pokémon I see with her are Morpeko and Sinistcha, and I’ve seen a little toy floating around her. As for the BB League, she completely changed it, she wants everyone to train every day without rest and that is… really worrying me and Gladys. She barely speaks to me now and when I try to start a conversation with her, she just… smiles at me without saying a word…” Tears start to fall down his eyes. “I… I started having nightmares about the worse to come and-”

He couldn’t finish his sentence as he started crying. Juliana hugged him and patted him in the back to calm him down. Kieran’s cries have been quieter and quieter as Juliana calmed him down.

“I’m sorry, Juliana…” He said as he dried his tears. “I’m such a crybaby, am I?”

“Of course not.” Juliana shook her head. “You had to let it out sometime. It’s okay to cry, you know.”

Kieran smiled.

“Sis changed, yet you still stayed the same.” He said. “I’m sure you can talk some sense to my Sis. She’ll understand.”

“I hope so.” Juliana said. “Anyway, you wanted to talk about Drayton?”

“Drayton.” Kieran took a deep breath. “He has been scheming a lot lately! And not only that, he had to repeat the same year THREE TIMES now! Part of me doesn’t trust him, but I’m still indebted to him since he's gifted me the T-M for Dragon Cheer. Sis, on the other hand, doesn’t trust him. I don't know what he’s planning, but please be careful.”

“I’ll be careful. Don’t worry.” Juliana smiled.

“I have to admit, your presence calms me down.” Kieran smiles. “I’m happy to be friends and classmates, Juliana.”

“Me too, Kieran.” Juliana nodded as she left towards the cafeteria.

When she arrived, she saw Carmine standing in front of Lacey, Amarys and a red-orange haired boy facing Drayton.

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (26)

“Alright, what are you planning BEHIND MY BACK, you bozo?!” Carmine was interrogating Drayton.

“Well, our honored guest has arrived.” Drayton smiled as Juliana approached him.

Carmine’s face turned from anger to surprise upon the sight of the girl she met at Kitakami.

“Wait… JULIANA?!” She gasped.

“Hello, Carmine.” Juliana smiled. “Long time no see.”

“Why are YOU here?!” the black and scarlet haired girl asked.

“You didn’t know?” Lacey shook her head. “She was chosen for our exchange program to attend this academy.”

“I-I didn’t know.” Carmine shook her head.

“You all know why we’re here at the cafeteria, right?” Drayton said.

“Spill the beans, Drayton, my man.” The red-orange haired boy said excitedly.

“Well, we are here to welcome Juliana to the League Club and the BB League Challenge.” Drayton said.

WHAT?!” Carmine grew in anger.

“We are all gathered to vote for Juliana to join.” Drayton smirked. “And I say yes, what do you think, Lacey?”

“I did give her a tour, but unfortunately, I have to follow the rules, so that is a no for me.” Lacey shook her head. “What do you say, Crispin?”

“Oh yeah!” Crispin shook her head. “I don’t mind her joining! It would be fun!”

“I would also have to decline.” The girl Kieran called Amarys. “The rules say that exchange students cannot enter.”

“Well, two say yes and two say no.” Drayton said. “What do you say, Queen Bee Champion?”

“I don’t care who enrolls, be it an outsider or resident.” Carmine shook her head before facing Juliana, her purple pupils glowing within her yellow irises. “I DO NOT LOSE. I’ll file a report.”

“Carmine, wait!” Lacey called out as Carmine walked away. She then turned to Drayton, extremely angry. “Look what you did, Drayton! Forcing others to do as you say!” She crosses her arms into an X. “It’s just not right!”

Lacey, Amarys and Crispin then walked off.

“Well, you are now officially a member of the League Club.” Drayton said. “Go talk to the receptionist at the Academy Entrance and she will sign you up.”

Juliana nodded before taking the elevator ride to the Academy Entrance, with Drayton following her. They went towards the reception desk near the battle court.

“Hello, I would like to register for the League Club.” Juliana said.

“Apologies, Miss.” The receptionist said. “But exchange students are not allowed to join the BB League.”

“Don’t worry, the Champion, the other BB League Elite Four members and I talked about it.” Drayton.

“Sir Drayton, even if you talked about it, we have to abide by the rules.” The receptionist sighed.

“Don’t worry. He is telling the truth.” Carmine said as she, Kieran and Gladys arrived. “We did talk about it, so would you mind entering my friend to the League Club and the BB League Challenge?”

“Ah, Miss Champion!” The receptionist gasped. “Of course! I’ll start the registration!”

“Thanks, Carmine.” Juliana smiled.

“I’m doing this for you ONCE and ONLY ONCE. ” Carmine said. “Also, I don’t want you to HOLD BACK . I heard you are a CHAMPION RANKED trainer and I know you are STRONG ENOUGH to beat everyone in the club.”

“I won’t hold back, Carmine.” Juliana smiled confidently. “And I promise to give you a battle that will make you have so much fun.”

WONDERFUL .” Carmine smiled darkly. “I swear to you. You won’t face the COWARDLY BATTLER CARMINE FROM KITAKAMI . You will face BLUEBERRY ACADEMY LEAGUE CHAMPIOM CARMINE.”

Kieran went to his sister.

“Hey, Sis.” He said. “Don’t you think you should talk to Juliana nicely? She is our friend after all.”

“Hush, Kiki.” Carmine said. “You know that I’m giving her advice as her FRIEND. I have to go.”

“Um, Carmine?” Gladys said. “Registration is done.”

Carmine had already left.

“There we go.” The receptionist said. “Registration of Miss Juliana from Paldea is done. And since you were recommended by the Champion, we have given you a rise of the ranks so you can challenge the Elite Four. Let me register each of the BB League Elite Four Locations to your Rotom Phone.”

The Receptionist then sent the location of Each BB League Elite Four Plaza to Juliana’s Rotom Phone. Crispin is at the Savannah Plaza, Lacey at the Coastal Plaza, Amarys at the Canyon Plaza and Drayton at the Polar Plaza.

“Do not worry about Order.” Drayton said. “You can challenge us at any phase. First, you will have to beat our Elite Trials. We’re counting on you.”

With that Drayton left.

“Hey, can we talk?” Gladys said. “It’s about Carmine. Meet me at the Central Plaza, alright?”

Gladys walked up, fixing her rose hairpin and her hair.

“Why would Gladys want to talk about Carmine?” Juliana asked.

“I think she is suspecting something about sis.” Kieran sighed. “Let’s go.”

The both of them went to the Terarium and rode Koraidon to the Central Plaza.

Chapter Text

Kieran and Juliana had a long ride to the Central Plaza since they had to climb a lot with Koraidon. As promised, Gladys was waiting for them.

“Sorry we’re late, Gladys.” Kieran said.

“Did we make you wait?” Juliana asked.

“Don’t worry.” Gladys smiled. “I just got here too.”

“What did you want to talk about that is related to Carmine?” Juliana said.

“There is something I need to tell you.” Glady said. “Kieran, you said that Carmine only eats purple mochi, right?”

“Yes.” Kieran nodded.

“It seems that Carmine is mostly seen with four Pokémon.” Gladys explained. “One of them is similar to a Peach-shaped toy, a dog-like Pokémom, a monkey-like Pokémon and a pheasant-like Pokémon. These four were seen around her one time. I got a machine called the Synchro Machine and I was using Comfey as surveillance, and one time she saw these four Pokémon with her. They must have terrified her since she sensed some sort of toxic aura.”

As they heard Gladys’ explanation, terror went towards Juliana and Kieran. They have some idea in mind, yet they don’t know how to tell her.

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (27)

“The only other person I told about this observation is Lacey.” Gladys continued. “It’s difficult to keep a conversation with Amarys, Crispin is an airhead and everything I say to Drayton goes from one ear to the other.”

“Alright.” Juliana tried to stay calm. “Thanks for everything.”

“You’re welcome. I have to go.” Gladys waved as she walked away.

“Th-th-this is bad…” Kieran shook her head. “Is Gladys saying… th-that S-Sis caught the LOYAL THREE?!”

“I can’t believe it…” Juliana said. “Okidogi, Munkidori and Fezandipiti?”

“What do we do?” Kieran said. “If she uses these Pokémon and you use Ogerpon-”

“Don’t worry, Kieran.” Juliana said. “I’ll fight the BB League Elite Four and challenge Carmine. Keep an eye just in case.”

“Alright, thanks, Juliana.” Kieran nodded and smiled.

Meanwhile, Carmine and Pecharunt went to a hidden section of the Savannah Biome. Florian and Terapagos were waiting for her.

“Apologies for the delay.” Carmine said. “The outsider is falling for the trap. Crispin, Drayton and Amarys are playing their roles very well.”

“So it is working.” Florian smiled. He is never seen with a negative expression. “Now the trap will be unleashed when you win and beat that girl. Isn’t that right, Terapagos?”

“Tera-Tera.” Terapagos chirped.

“Pecha!” Pecharunt said.

“The outsider WON’T SEE WHAT’S COMING .” Carmine smiled darkly. “The ULTIMATE STAGE will begin and the TOXIC CHAIN will do its part. Pecharunt and Terapagos will be the main stars while we will play our roles.”

“Terapagos and Pecharunt will pass the torch to us as the main stars.” Florian said. “The other students will be part of our army as soon as you do your thing.”

THE OUTSIDER WON’T SEE WHAT’S COMING!” Carmine laughed darkly.

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (28)

On the other side, Juliana strategized for her challenges at the BB League if she wanted to face the Elite Four and Carmine. She kept Skeledirge and Ogerpon while she did some BBQs for BP to unlock more Pokémon for the Biome and also pay for the Elite Trials.

Once her strategy was done, she decided to face the BB League Elite Four with Skeledirge, Ogerpon, Overquil, Serperior, Alolan Muk and Alolan Golem. She also caught a Delphox and Minior for a certain Elite Trial.

The first Trial she went to was the Fairy Elite Trial, where Lacey was waiting for her.

“Hello, Juliana.” Lacey said. “I apologize for voting against you joining the League Club and facing the BB League. I didn’t want to involve you in any drama regarding the club since I heard Carmine is not on good terms with you.”

“Carmine is not on good terms with me?” Juliana was saddened. “But she was very-”

“I know it’s hard to accept.” Lacey shook her head. “But don’t let that take you down. I owe you a trial.”

“Of course.” Juliana nods.

They went to a small corner of the Coastal Biome, where Lacey does her trial, which is a quiz regarding Cute Pokémon.

Juliana knew the details of some Pokémon since she did some Pokédex work while doing the BBQs. She knew Pikachu stored electricity on its cheeks, Venonat could see better in the night thanks to its eyes and could tell the different colored Miniors and spotted the Authentic Sinistea.

“Now, for the final question.” Lacey said. “Come on out, Granbull!” A Granbull stood beside Lacey. “My buddy Granbull is very cute, don’t you think? Now for our question… which body part do I use as a pillow?”

Juliana was not confused by the question since she heard Lacey had a secret.

“The… tummy.” The Paldean girl answered.

“Ding ding ding!” Lacey clapped. “You are correct! Granbull’s belly is so soft that you can use it as a pillow! Congratulations! You passed my test! Your prize is a battle against me! Once you are ready, we can begin.”

Juliana used Overquil and Alolan Muk for Lacey’s Whimsicott, Granbull, Primarina and Alcremeie and swapped Overquill to Cornerstone Mask Ogerpon for Lacey’s Galarian Slowbro and Skeledirge for Lacey’s Excadrill, which she did not know was Terastalized to a Fairy Type so her Torch Songs were worse than helpful.

But it didn’t matter, despite Lacey knocking down her Skeledirge, she managed to defeat the Fairy BB League Elite Four. Lacey praised the Pokémon for their cuteness and their battling styles. After they took a picture Juliana got a badge that had the similar design as the Gym Badges, which Arven and Team Star got the inspiration from, and was given the Technical Move Alluring Voice.

As Juliana left the Coastal Plaza, she ran into Florian.

“Well, if it isn’t Juliana.” He said. “I heard so much about you from Carmine.”

“Who are you?!” Juliana asked.

“I am Florian.” Florian said. “I used to be a student just like you. I was a student of Uva Academy, but I had to abandon my studies because some Pokémon trio took down everyone at my party except Terapagos. Now I am Carmine’s advisor. You know Carmine is strong, so there is no way you will win. Give up.”

“I won’t give up!” Juliana said. “And I won’t be held back!”

“You remind me of myself.” Florian’s smile never dropped. “But you will regret not abandoning your challenge.”

With that, Florian left.

Who is that boy? ” Juliana thought to herself. “ And why does he look like me? Except for the attire and the eyes.

Kieran was heard arriving.

“Hey, Juliana, are you ok?” He asked. “I heard you defeated Lacey from Gladys’ Confey. Congratulations.

“I’m…” Juliana changed her expression. “By the way, did you see a boy who looks like me?”

“No, I haven’t.” Kieran shook his head. “Good luck with the other BB League members.”

As Juliana did Crispin, Amarys and Drayton’s trials and fought them, she couldn't help but feel suspicious. Everytime she defeated each and one of them, they would change behind her back as she left and Florian would always tell her to not fight Carmine, despite the fact that Carmine is more than happy to battle her.

Kieran went to Juliana.

“Juliana, are you ok?” He asked.

“Hey, Kieran?” Juliana said. “I need to tell you something… can we go to your room? And can you bring Gladys?”

“Ok…” Kieran was getting nervous.

They went to Kieran’s room. Gladys and Lacey arrived. Kieran was shocked to see Lacey.

“Oh. Hi, Lacey.” Kieran said. “I didn’t notice you.”

“Sorry for startling you.” Lacey said. “I can’t help but feel suspicious of Crispin, Amarys and Drayton’s behavior.”

“I know how you feel.” Juliana said. “I cannot help but… say that I have been seeing a strange boy who looks just like me. I asked Kieran, but he didn’t see anything.”

“So you’re not the only one who is suspecting something?” Gladys shook her head.

“What did that boy say?” Lacey asked.

“He apparently doesn’t want me to fight Carmine.” Juliana said.

“But Sis is more than excited to battle you.” Kieran said. “Why would he not want you to battle her?”

“Are they… planning something?” Lacey asked.

“We’ll investigate as Juliana battles Carmine.” Gladys said. “Maybe we’ll get some answers.”

Kieran hugged Juliana and silently wished her good luck. The Paldean girl went to the Academy Entrance’s reception desk and told the receptionist that she would like to battle Carmine. The receptionist nodded and grabbed a microphone.

“Attention, everyone.” The receptionist said. “Please gather at the Academy Entrance’s Battle Court. The battle between Exchange Student Juliana and Champion Carmine is about to begin.”

Later after everyone gathered around the court, Juliana and Carmine faced each other on opposite sides of the field.

“It is finally time.” Carmine said. “I risked everything to get here. I tossed away everything. Friends, acquaintances, dreams and family. I trained and trained everyday. I fought and defeated the Blueberry League Elite Four and Became Champion. Everything I did… all of it.” She glared at Juliana. “ALL OF THIS IS TO DEFEAT YOU RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW!!!!

Carmine sent out Hatterenne and Kingdra while Juliana sent out Skeledirge and Wellspring Mask Ogerpon.

“Today will be the day that you lose to me!” Carmine said. Then she saw Ogerpon. She then laughed darkly. “YOU REALLY HAVE SOME NERVE, BRINGING THAT OGRE NOW OF ALL TIME?!

“Pon…” Ogerpon was sad to see how much Carmine changed in a bad way.

Sis was spiteful towards Ogerpon… ” Kieran thought to himself. “ Even though she did tell everyone in Mossui Town that Ogerpon is innocent… then why is she hating Ogerpon now…?

The battle against Carmine was difficult, Juliana had to figure out how to fight Venasaur, Hatterene, Kingdra and Metagross, the latter two being Pokémon Drayton and Amarys have respectively. She still prevailed.

“I warned you.” Florian appeared from behind the crowd. “ I warned you not to fight Carmine. The show is about to begin.”

“Show?” A Blueberry student said in confusion.

Carmine smiled darkly as she sent out Pecharunt.

“That’s one of the Pokémon Comfey saw!” Gladys gasped.

“Graaaah!!” Ogerpon was angry upon the sight of Pecharunt. “Pon! Pon!”

“Ogerpon knows that Pokémon?!” Kieran gasped.

Carmine laughed as her appearance completely changed.

PECHARUNT!!! ” She shouted. “ TIME TO UNLEASH THE TOXIC CHAIN!! TIME FOR ALL OF BLUEBERRY ACADEMY TO BE PART OF THE SCRIPT OF HISTORY!!!!

Pecharunt first fired Mochi at everyone present and everyone took a bite except for Juliana, Kieran, Lacey and Gladys.

Pecharunt unleashed a toxic chain that wraps the entirety of Blueberry Academy.

“Let’s get out of here!!” Lacey said as she grabbed Juliana’s hand, since she was frozen in horror and she, Juliana, Kieran and Gladys ran towards the docks where planes land.

“I don’t believe this…” Gladys said. “Carmine, why?”

“This is all my fault…” Kieran said. “If only I didn’t lie to her….”

“You had a reason, Kieran…” Gladys said.

“This wasn’t supposed to happen.” Lacey said, crossing her hands into an X. “Carmine is supposed to surrender her position as champion and give it to Juliana. And Crispin would be dropped out of the BB League Elite Four.”

“Um, Lacey…” Gladys said. “Juliana is not talking at all…”

“Juliana?” Kieran said.

“I can’t believe these two would do something like this…” Juliana said, all the light having gotten out of her eyes. “I’ve… never been betrayed…”

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (30)

“What do we do?” Kieran said.

“There is only one place left to hide so we can plan something.” Juliana said.

“Where is it?” Gladys asked.

“The Great Crater of Paldea.” Juliana answered. “The one place known as Area Zero.”

Notes:

Hope you enjoyed first part of the Indigo Disk Section of the Dark Path AU.

I have no idea on what I'm gonna do aside from Kieran, Juliana, Lacey and Gladys trying to do something to stop the toxic reign to rescue Carmine and the entirety of Blueberry Academy.

Chapter Text

Because they were in a hurry, Kieran, Lacey, Gladys and Juliana had to rush to take a flight to Paldea to explain the situation. Lacey had to drag Juliana because the latter was frozen in betrayal. Kieran looked back so many times due to disbelief that his sister did something so terrible. He was worried about Carmine, but not just Carmine… Amarys, Crispin, Drayton, Briar and Cyrano are caught in the crossfire caused by that Pokémon, Pecharunt…

“This cannot be happening…” He sighed. “Sis would never…”

“Comfey was right…” Lacey said as she turned to Gladys. “That Pokémon is the cause of it all. It corrupted our school.”

“I’m sorry I didn’t warn the others.” Gladys shook her head. “No one would take an Ex-Elite Four seriously.”

“Please don’t blame yourself, Gladys.” Lacey crossed her hands to an X. “You know you tried your hardest. You even sacrificed yourself to save Crispin from being demoted. Even Carmine praises you for that.”

“Our flight is almost here.” Juliana said as she walked towards the gate for their flight to Paldea.

“Is Juliana ok?” Lacey asked.

“She has been awfully quiet ever since we went our way to the airport.” Gladys said. “Hey, we shouldn’t keep her waiting.”

After they took their seats on their… empty flight, Kieran sat next to Juliana to reassure her everything would be ok, but Juliana didn’t look at him. Seeing her like this broke his heart… that heartbreak was worse than when he had the argument with Carmine about him hiding the truth of Ogerpon, worse than when Carmine refused to talk to him, worse than when Carmine spat on Drayton’s pride and changed the League Club.

This is not what I want… ” Juliana thought to herself. “ Carmine played with our friendship… played with my concerns… played with my victory… Kieran will do the same… I know it…

As the plane landed on Mesagoza and the four of them got out, Gladys noticed Juliana going slower.

“Juliana?” The green haired Galarian asked. “Are you ok?”

“I’ve… never felt so betrayed…” Juliana mumbled out loud. “I never should have gone to Kitakami… I never should have caught Ogerpon… I never should have gone to Blueberry Academy.”

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (31)

“Hey.” Gladys shook her head. “Don’t say that. If you never went on that trip, you would have never befriended Kieran.”

“Carmine was my friend… now she did this.” Juliana said. ‘But she betrayed us.”

Having heard enough, Kieran goes to Juliana.

“Juliana, listen to me!” He shouted. “Don’t lose hope! You don’t have to feel that way just because something took control of my sis! You’re not the only one who feels upset! Gladys is upset! Lacey is upset! I’m upset! But we are confident that we can help my sis! So please! Don’t go to the dark path too!”

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (32)

Juliana opened her eyes and realized Kieran was right. She wasn’t alone in this struggle. Kieran, Gladys and Lacey were with her.

“Kieran…” Juliana shook her head. “I’m so sorry… I must have hurt your feelings when I said those words.”

“You didn’t hurt my feelings.” Kieran shook his head. “Of course… If it was me instead, I would have said worse things, but it doesn’t matter.” He smiles. “Because I have you, Lacey and Gladys.”

“You are so selfless.” Gladys smiled. “I wonder if you would have been our champion instead of Carmine.”

“Oh. There’s no time to waste.” Juliana said. “We have to go warn someone about what happened. Maybe La Primera can help.”

“Who?” Gladys asked.

“You’ll meet her.” Juliana said as she went to the Pokémon League building.

The three of them followed Juliana, with Lacey being distracted by Tadenmaus due to their adorableness and her Excadrill had to drag her back to the others.

As they were about to ask the security guard for access to the Pokémon League Building, the doors opened and Geeta was standing at its doorstep, with Rika standing behind her.

“Greetings, Champion Juliana.” Geeta smiled and waved. “Did not expect to see you so soon.”

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (33)

“Primera, I apologize for the sudden visit, but can you help us with something?” Juliana asked.

“Of course.” Geeta nodded. “But can we speak inside? I fear it might rain badly.”

The Top Champion, The Ground Type Elite Four, the Champion-rank student, Kieran, Gladys and Lacey got inside the Pokémon League building. Juliana explained the situation to Geeta and Rika as best she could so she couldn’t lose her patience.

“So that is what happened?” Rika hummed. “To think a Pokémon caused all of this. And not only that, it is puppeteering the current champion, who is the boy’s sister.”

“That is correct.” Gladys nodded. “Unfortunately, I could not avert this situation faster. I take the blame for all of it.”

“Please, do not blame yourself, Miss Gladys.” Geeta said. “You would not want to sully your good name as a Gym Trainer from Galar, right?”

“You’re a Gym Trainer?” Juliana turned to Gladys.

“I forgot to mention that…” Gladys sighed. “Apologies. You see, I am from Turrfield and I am aspiring to be a Gym Trainer for our Leader Milo. I was chosen, but I could not use a Pokémon I had since I was a baby, Comfey, but Milo didn’t mind.”

“Then why are you studying in Blueberry Academy?” Juliana asked.

“Because I felt like I was not strong enough as a Gym Trainer.” Gladys said. “Anyway, we strayed ourselves off topic.”

“There is another reason why we are in this meeting.” Geeta said. “You see, I had plans to give Briar access to a restricted area in the Great Crater of Paldea for investigations reasons, but since the incident happened, we would have to delay the news until the storm calms, however, since you are here, you can help us with the investigation.”

“Us?” Kieran said.

“Of course!” Rika smiled. “I heard you are all strong trainers, so that you can experience new thrills for your Treasure Hunt!”

“Of course!” Lacey said. “Blueberry Academy may be a mess, but this research can be helpful for our journey!”

“I’m in too.” Gladys nodded.

“Me three.” Kieran nodded. “I want to save my sis!”

“So it is decided, Primera.” Juliana said. “We’re all going.”

“What a relief.” Geeta smiled. “It gives me joy to see that you all are entering. Be careful now. And, Champion Juliana, we would like to have a word with you.”

Kieran gulped. Was Juliana in trouble? Did she do something wrong? He shook his head as he, Gladys and Lacey left.

“Well, I heard you have been doing a lot of hardwork as Champion, Juliana.” Geeta said.

“Thank you, Primera.” Juliana said. “I have been extremely busy with the Pokédex, the Field Trip and the exchange program.”

“However…” Rika’s angry smile turned to a glare. “You still entered forbidden territory in the Great Crater of Paldea, especially Area Zero! What were you thinking, lass?!”

“I’m sorry…” Juliana sighed. “The thing is-”

“Oh, now you’re sorry!” Rika was still angry. “You should have been sorry when-”

“It is alright, Rika.” Geeta reassured her employee. “Champion Juliana sensed that Paldea was in danger, so she had to do something.”

“Fine.” Rika sighed in defeat. “If you say so, boss.”

“And before you go, Champion Juliana. I want you to have this.” Geeta said as she gave Juliana an Indigo Disk.

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (34)

“Whoa… is this a T-M?” Juliana asked.

“It’s not a T-M.” Geeta said. “This may help you in your investigation. If you find nothing of use, you may return it to me.”

“Of course.” Juliana nodded. “Gracias, Primera. (Thank you, Primera.)”

After the meeting with Geeta and Rika, Juliana, Kieran, Lacey and Amarys made some switches in their teams for their adventure in Area Zero. Juliana kept Skeledirge and Ogerpon in her party while bringing some more friends… Walking Wake, Milotic, a Torterra she got from a picnic with Jacq as an egg and Koraidon. Kieran put Mantine back home so his grandparents could take care of it and put Hydrapple, Lapras, Yanmega, an Archaludon which he evolved from a Duraladon he found with Drayton, a Delphox he found on one of his classes with Crispin and an Umbreon he got from Juliana as an egg during their trip in Kitakami. Lacey kept her original team of Whimsicott, Granbull, Galarian Slowbro, Primarina, Alcremie and Excadrill, but she did catch a Fidough, an Eevee (so she can evolve it into Sylveon), a Red Flower Floette and a Tinkatuff. Gladys had to switch her entire team except for Comfey and Sawsbuck. She caught an Arboliva, a Tsareena, a Gogoat and a Todescruel.

“You’re not using your Blueberry Team?” Juliana asked.

“The others needed some new friends.” Gladys smiled. “And this helps with the lack of Grass Types in the Terarium. Don’t worry about them being scared of Venomoth. He’s friendly.”

The four of them arrived at the Zero Gate and took the teleporter that took them to the First research station, which was way easier than flying on Koraidon since Gladys had a fear of heights… due to grass being weak to flying.

Once they got out of the first research station, Kieran, Gladys and Lacey looked in awe at the scenery in front of them. Gladys had completely forgotten her fear of heights.

“Oh my.” Lacey covered her mouth in surprise. “Who would have known something that only appeared in myths and fairy tales existed…”

“Wowzers.” Kieran muttered.

“What a marvelous place…” Gladys gasped. “How do you know so much about this, Juliana?”

“I’ve been here with my friends from Naranja Academy.” Juliana said. “Three to be exact, Nemona, a champion-ranked trainer and my rivals, Arven, the son of the esteemed Professor Sada, and Penny, who is good with her hacking skills and technology.”

Penny… ” Gladys thought to herself. “ I could have sworn I heard that name from Steel Peony himself, but no… it must be my imagination .”

Suddenly, Koraidon pops out of its Pokéball and barks at Juliana.

“Goodness, that thing scared me!” Gladys shrieked. “You are way too big to jump out like that, you know that, Agias?”

The Winged King tilted its head in confusion because Gladys got that nickname thanks to Amarys.

“So you went here too?” Kieran asked Koraidon.

“Grooh.” Koraidon barked.

“Come on. There is no time to waste.” Lacey shook her head. “We have to hurry.”

“I know where to go.” Juliana said. “Follow me.”

Juliana recalled Koraidon to its Pokéball and the four trainers went to the Zero Lab by foot while avoiding the ancient Paradox Pokémon, but it was difficult since Lacey was distracted by a Scream Tail and confused it for an actual Jigglypuff, Kieran got scared by a Roaring Moon and Gladys caught a Brute Bonnet.

Finally, they arrived at the bottom, well… supposed bottom of Area Zero, where the Zero Lab is.

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (35)

“What is this place?” Gladys looked around. “First, we were in a land, now we were in a cave…”

“I feel like I’m in a sci-fi movie.” Kieran giggled to himself.

“How do we get in?” Lacey asked.

“When I first arrived, I had to unlock four locks to activate that machine and enter Zero Lab, but it doesn’t appear to be the case here.” Juliana said.

The four went to the machine near Zero Lab. When Juliana tried to open the gate with the push of the button, nothing happened.

“ACCESS TO ZERO LAB LOCKED DUE TO INACTIVITY.” The machine said.

“It can speak?!” Kieran squeaked.

“Of course, Kieran.” Gladys said. “It’s the same as the Self-Heal Machines and the Technical Move Machine back at the Terarium.”

“What does it mean by inactivity?” Lacey said.

“INDIGO DISK DETECTED.” The machine said. “PLEASE INSERT INDIGO DISK.”

Juliana took out the Indigo Disk into the machine.

“INDIGO DISK INSERTED.” The machine said. “RELOCATING ZERO LAB ELEVATOR TO AREA ZERO UNDERDEPTHS.”

The gates of the Zero Lab opened.

“It worked.” Juliana said. “Let’s go inside.”

As they carefully approached the Zero Lab’s indoors, Juliana pressed the button on the elevator and the elevator opened. She, Kieran, Gladys and Lacey entered the elevator and as the doors closed, the elevator started going down.

“Is it just me or is the elevator going faster and faster and further down.” Gladys asked.

“That’s what elevators do.” Lacey said. “But you are right, we are going faster and further.”

“Hey, everyone?” Kieran asked. “Where are we going? That machine said we were being redirected.”

“You do have a point, Kieran.” Gladys said.

Suddenly, Juliana’s Rotom Phone rang and she picked it up.

“Hey, little buddy.” Arven’s voice rang through the speaker.

“Hi, Arven.” Juliana said. “I believe you got the details from someone that I’m returning to Area Zero?”

“Mostly from Director Clavell.” Arven said. “Apparently, he got some information that there is some hidden treasure in Area Zero. Maybe it might be related to the research my Mom was doing. It has something to do with a new Terastalization phenomenon or something along those lines.”

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (36)

“Alright.” Juliana said. “I’ll get as much information as I can and hand it over to you and the Director.”

“Be careful, little buddy.” Arven said before he hung up.

“That’s your friend?” Kieran asked.

“Oh yeah.” Juliana said. “I should introduce you to him sometime when all of this is done.”

“For now, we need to focus on the mission.” Lacey said. “The mission of saving Blueberry Academy and our classmates.”

The four of them are waiting for their extremely long elevator ride to end.

Chapter Text

Kieran and Juliana had fallen asleep during the elevator ride, and they were woken up by the sound of rumbles.

“It seems the elevator stopped.” Glady said. “Is everyone ready?”

“We’re ready.” Lacey said.

Juliana pressed the open button on the elevator, but as soon as the elevator doors opened, the four students were surprised by the sight of crystal caves and glitter surrounding the area.

“Oh… my… goodness!!” Kieran’s surprise turned to excitement as he ran out of the elevator. “This is so amazing!! I’ve never seen something so… so… so beautiful!!”

“I know…” Juliana said. “I wonder why Miss Briar is intent on researching this place.”

“Hey… I found something.” Lacey’s attention on a desk filled with documents.

“Those must be notes written by Professor Sada.” Juliana said as she took the notes, recognizing the hand writing. “This has some new notes… ‘It seems that the scientists here discovered a new species and a mysterious phenomenon that connects the Terastalization phenomenon. The name given to the species is Terapagos and the phenomenon is called the Stellar Tera Type.’”

“Terapagos…” Kieran said. “I think I heard that when that Florian boy helped the Pokémon controlling Sis manipulate the Toxic chain.”

“And it also says something about a… ‘Stellar’ Tera type…” Lacey said. “I think this might be the thing your Top Champion and Miss Briar were trying to research, right, Kieran?”

“Yeah.” Kieran said. “That was why Miss Briar, Sis and I left the Field trip to Kitakami earlier. I traveled around the world with Miss Briar thanks to Gladys and Lacey’s recommendation. I was planning to participate in the BB League, but then Director Cyrano asked me to accompany him to Paldea to pick up Juliana for the beginning of the Foreign exchange program.”

“The Director did what?!” Lacey shook her head. “He knows you have a lot of classes and training to do!” She crosses her hands into an X. “What he did is not right!”

“Lacey, please calm down.” Gladys reassured her clubmate. “We can talk to the director about this after everything is solved.”

“I’m sorry…” Lacey sighed. “The Director can be… a bit forgetful at times.”

“It’s ok.” Juliana said as she put the notes back on the desk they were placed. “Let’s go discover this place.”

As Lacey, Juliana, Kieran and Gladys explored, they discovered that the place is very connected to Area Zero, and not only that, the only Pokémon that reside there are Carbink and Glimmet.

Suddenly, they see a gigantic crystal blocking the path ahead.

“Well, this… makes things harder.” Juliana said.

“How do we break this… gigantic crystal?” Lacey asked.

“Maybe Juliana’s Agias can use one of its moves to pierce the barrier.” Gladys suggested.

“Hold on!” Kieran said. “If we use brute force, won’t that exhaust Koraidon? And not only that, this is no normal barrier of crystal. Maybe we should try to figure out where this thing comes from.”

The four then heard a squeak, turned around and saw a Glimmora surrounder in a light blue colored light.

“Huh?” Gladys said. “This is new… I’ve never seen such a beautiful specimen… the petals it has… could it be a grass type?”

She was slowly about to approach the aggressive Pokémon when Kieran pulled her back.

“Gladys!” He shouted. “That thing is dangerous! And it’s no grass type! We need someone to take it down!”

“I’ll do it.” Juliana said as she sent out Milotic.

As soon as the battle begin, the wild Glimmora terstalized, but not into a rock or a poison Tera type, but into the new Stellar Tera Type that Professor Sada wrote in her notes. The crown was shaped like a small turtle surrounded by 18 crystals, representing all the types known from Normal to fairy.

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (37)

“What the?!” Juliana said. “So that’s the Stellar Tera Type that Professor Sada wrote about?! Well, this will be an exciting challenge! Let’s do this, Milotic!”

The battle took longer than expected because just like every other Tera Pokémon, it was required to attack Glimmora twice. Once the Glimmora was defeated, the crystal barrier disappeared into glitter.

“Wowzers!” Kieran squeaked. “The thing just… disappeared into thin air after that Pokémon was defeated!”

“And not only that, the path is cleared.” Lacey said. “Come on, we have no time to waste.”

As the journey continued, the group would encounter more crystal barriers and Juliana volunteered to take each of the Stellar Tera Pokémon down. The second crystal was summoned by a Noivern, the third crystal was summoned by a Sandy Shocks and the fourth crystal was summoned by Gargancl. Lacey, Gladys and Kieran had to call her by order, with Kieran even riding his Lapras to get her. He was caught off guard by the tree where Gargancl was standing.

“Isn’t it beautiful?” Juliana said.

“I know…” Kieran said. “It reminds me of the wisteria in Kitakami.”

They looked at the tree in silence when Kieran took a deep breath.

“Hey, Juliana…” He turned to the Paldean student. “Do you… have any fears when it comes to what has been happening recently…?”

“Honestly, I didn’t expect Carmine to… not be on good terms with me.” Juliana sighed. “I thought we would be good friends… after all… I lied to her about Ogerpon. And not only that, I witnessed your argument with her at your front door.”

“You’re not the only one who’s worried about Sis…” Kieran said. “Before Sis became the BB League Champion, she had challenged me to a sparring match and… I lost. I didn’t knock out any of my Pokémon. The team I had were Yanmega, Furret, Lapras, Poliwrath, Gliscor and Hydrapple… Do you want to know what she said when she mercilessly beat me?”

“What did she say?” Juliana asked.

“She said… ‘You should not have gone to the Dreaded Den with that outsider. If you really wanted to be strong, you should have been the one who was lied to.’ It was like… that… Pokémon was playing with my feelings by pretending to be my Sis… No one liked how my sis changed… yet… I still was loved, despite the fact that my sis was controlled into becoming a tyrant…”

“And you said you had nightmares?” Juliana asked.

“Yes…” Kieran nodded.

He couldn’t finish his words… he had broken down in tears and collapsed on his knees. Juliana went to him and hugged him tightly, petting his black and purple hair and whispering words of comfort to his ears as the boy sobbed loudly. Lapras even sensed her trainer’s sadness and nuzzled her head onto his.

Kieran calmed down before taking deep breaths, with Juliana patting him on his shoulder. The last time he was cheered up like this was when Carmine attacked some bullies who haunted him with Cursola.

“Are you feeling better?” Juliana asked.

“Yeah.” Kieran nodded. “Thank you, Juliana… And you two, Lapras.”

Lapras chirped.

“Oh yeah.” Kieran remembered. “We have to go meet up with Lacey and Gladys. We must have kept them.”

They returned to see Lacey and Gladys finishing repelling the wild Glimmet and Carbink.

“Apologies for the wait.” Juliana said. “We should keep going.”

Before they continued, Gladys stopped Juliana.

“One thing I should mention.” The Grass Gym Trainer said. “While you and Kieran were taking your time, we got attacked by these Pokémon. While Lacey’s Team is still intact, my team is completely spent.”

“Oh. Sorry about that.” Juliana sighed.

“It’s ok.” Gladys smiled. “I still have some training to do. So far, I still have Arboliva and Comfey. So if anything happens, you better come save me.”

The four of them continued until they arrived at a small chamber where a small crystal rested upon a bigger crystal.

“Is this… it?” Lacey asked.

“It seems so.” Gladys said. “There is a small stone over there. This could be what this Professor of Juliana’s could be talking about.”

“Not so fast.” Florian’s voice was heard as he and Terapagos arrived. “I will not let you near that rock.”

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (38)

“Not you again.” Lacey got angry. “Do you ever stop hindering us?!” She then crossed her arms into an X. “What you are doing is absolutely not right!”

“Don’t think I don’t know what you are doing.” Florian mused. “You want to awaken the Hidden Treasure of Area Zero. So you can see the truth of Carmine’s current state, so you can ‘rescue’ her from Pecharunt’s Malignant Chain and release her grasp on Pecharunt, Okidogi and Fezandipiti.”

“How do you know?!” Juliana gasped.

“I am from another dimension.” Florian explained. “Where I am from, these ancient Pokémon like ‘Great Tusk’, ‘Walking Wake’ and ‘Winged King’ that you have are replaced by futuristic Pokémon like ‘Iron Treads’, ‘Iron Leaves’ and ‘Iron Serpent’. In my world, you were the tyrant, Kieran, but you made these decisions by your own will, not by some mochi.”

“I-I was a m-monster?!” Kieran was left in denial.

“Exactly.” Florian continued. “This Terapagos I have by my side was caught by you, you used it against me, and when you Terastalized it, you tried to recall it, only for your Master Ball to shatter. All because I was the one who lied to you about Ogerpon.”

“How could you…” Gladys growled, angry that Florian was making her classmate vulnerable. “You’re playing with Kieran’s mind!”

“As I was investigating mysterious creatures in Area Zero, I was ambushed by Iron Leaves, Iron Boulder and Iron Crown. My Pokémon protected me and they were badly injured to the point that they had to be placed at a Pokémon center.” Florian kept going. “Only Terapagos was intact. And I took the elevator to the time machine placed by Professor Turo… and I traveled to your dimension, where I met Carmine as she was growling how she needs to get stronger.”

“Liar!” Juliana shouted, angry at Florian. “You played with Carmine!”

“I see that you do not believe me.” Florian never got angry, just kept a dark smile. “Then why don’t you battle me?”

Kieran stepped infront of Juliana, Gladys and Lacey and sent out Hydrapple.

“I’ll battle you.” He said, his voice no longer showing fear.

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (39)

His black and purple hair was blowing in non-existant wind, the tie he is wearing with his Summer Uniform was getting loose and Hydrapple growled, its five Syrpent heads glaring at Florian.

“Very well.” Florian said. “Come, Terapagos. The Indigo Disk.”

Terapagos took the battlefield and transformed into its Terastal Form with its Tera Shift ability.

Did it just… transform?” Kieran thought to himself. “I mustn’t be held back by fear. I have to do this… for Sis… for the entirety of Blueberry Academy.

“Zen Headbutt.” Florian commanded.

“Syrup Bomb, Hydrapple!!” Kieran shouted.

Terapagos’ Zen headbutt dealt little damage while its Tera Shell made sure that Syrup Bomb dealt less damage, but Terapagos was caught off guard by Hydrapple’s Supersweet syrup.

“How many abilities does that Pokémon have?!” Juliana asked.

“You do have a Pokémon that has five abilities in the Ogre that Kieran talks about.” Gladys said, reminding Juliana of Ogerpon’s ability depending on the mask she wears.

“Oh… yeah.” Juliana was dumbstruck.

Kieran’s Hydrapple was lucky to land a critical with its five headed Fickle Beam, weakening Terapagos.

I won…” Kieran thought, smiling to himself. “I finally won one battle… now I can save Sis…

“Don’t think this is the end.” Florian said as he took out a Tera Orb. His body was surrounded by Crystal. “You wish to know why Terapagos is called the Hidden Treasure of Area Zero. This… is why.”

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (40)

More crystals appeared on Florian’s body as he charged his Tera Orb and tossed it at Terapagos, Terastalizing it to its Stellar Form.

“No way…” Lacey was terrified. “Is this…?”

“Its strongest form…” Gladys shook her head.

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (41)

“We have to help Kieran! He can’t handle this alone!” Juliana shouted.

The three girls went to Kieran’s side and sent out their Pokémon, Wellspring Mask for Ogerpon, Arboliva for Gladys and Whimsicott for Lacey.

“Alright… Whimsicott! Tailwind!” Lacey commanded.

“Arboliva! Energy Ball!” Lacey shouted.

“Ogerpon! Low Sweep!” Juliana said.

“Hydrapple! Syrup Bomb!” Kieran called.

The battle was extremely long, since Terapagos would easily knock their Pokémon out with Tera Starstorm, create barriers with Terastal Energy and steal Terastal Energy. Gladys was out since Arboliva and Comfey were her only remaining Pokémon, Lacey was stuck with Galarian Slowbro, Primarina and Excadrill, Kieran was only able to use Lapras and Juliana was stuck with Walking Wake and Skeledirge.

Suddenly, the crystal slumbering on the bigger stone started glowing and floating to Kieran’s location.

“Huh?!” Kieran looked behind him in surprise.

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (42)

The crystal awakened and another Terapagos landed infront of Kieran as it looked at him with confidence.

“So the other Terapagos woke up.” Florian said. “Well, this will be interesting.”

“Tera-Tera!” The recently awakened Terapagos looked at Kieran.

“You… want to battle with me?” Kieran shook his head in disbelief. “Of course. I’ll do what I can.”

Thanks to their new friend, the four students defeated Florian’s Terapagos, shattering its Stellar Terastalization and transforming it to its weak form.

Kieran looked at Florian and saw that he was about to disappear.

“Wait… don’t leave… how can I save my sis?” He said.

“It is up to you…” Florian said. “The only way to save Carmine… and the rest of Blueberry Academy… is by defeating Pecharunt… Take care… and… save Carmine…”

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (43)

Kieran tried to reach his hand out to Florian, but he and his Terapagos disappeared.

“He’s gone…” Gladys said.

“He probably returned back to his home.” Juliana said. “Where he can be at peace.”

Kieran turned to the wild Terapagos. Smiling to himself, he gently tapped the small crystal turtle with a Pokéball, sealing it inside. The Pokéball twirled three times and clicked, meaning that he caught Terapagos, the Indigo Disk, the Hidden Treasure of Area Zero.

Suddenly, Juliana gets a message from an unknown origin on her Rotom Phone. After reading the message, she goes to Kieran.

“Kieran, we have to go to the Crystal Pool.” She said.

Notes:

New Party:

Kieran: Terapagos (Stellar Tera), Lapras (Tera Water), Archaludon, Delphox (Tera Fire), Umbreon (Tera Normal), Hydrapple (Tera Dragon)

I decided to give Terapagos to Kieran instead of Juliana since 1. Juliana already has Ogerpon and 2. Kieran was using Terapagos himself, but instead of strenght to defeat the Player, Kieran will use Terapagos as an ally that can save his sister from Pecharunt

The next chapter will be a combination of a different version of a certain event and the final battle against Pecharunt.

Chapter 15: Final Story Chapter: The Final Battle

Chapter Text

Without hesitation, Juliana, Kieran, Lacey and Gladys had to fly to Kitakami. Juliana told the others that they had to go to the Crystal Pool, but she couldn’t tell the other details. Kieran felt the strange feeling of homesickness during the flight. He was going back home, but without his sister, who was in danger. How would he tell his grandparents about what happened?

Once they landed in Kitakami and arrived at Mossui Town, Kieran had to leave Yanmega with his grandparents. Just like Furret, Poliwrath and Hydrapple, Yanmega was best friends with him ever since he was little and Yanmega was a Yanma, and not only that, Yanmega was friendly with Carmine, something that Kieran considered.

But Kieran knew that Yanmega was scared of his grandmother’s Chandelure, so it was better that Yanmega could get to know Mantine, despite Flying being strong against Fire.

Much to his surprise, he didn’t see Carmine’s Mightyena, Ninetales, Swadloon, Basculegion, Mienshao and Chandelure… Maybe she did take them with her to Blueberry Academy. That gave him relief because like him, Carmine loves Pokémon. He did promise to his Pokémon that they would save his sister and have both parties meet.

“Kieran? Are you coming?” Gladys’ voice echoed, getting his attention.

“Coming!” He said.

He said his goodbyes to his Pokémon and his grandparents, who were unaware of their granddaughter’s current state.

The four students then walked across Reveler’s Road, ran through Oni Mountain, visited Ogerpon’s old home at the Dreaded Den and avoided many Koffing, Slugma and Geodude at the first half of the Infernal Pass. As they climbed the stairs to the Crystal Pool, Kieran felt Terapagos’ Pokéball shake. He tried to whisper some words to calm it down, but the shaking continued.

They arrived at the crystal pool, the water still glimmering and the crystals glowing brighter and brighter.

“What a beautiful place.” Lacey said. “The water is so crystalline… and the gems are as bright as a Tera Orb about to charge…”

“Why did you want us to come here, Juliana?” Kieran asked.

Before Juliana could answer, Terapagos popped out of its Pokéball. It walked to the farthest end of the pool and squeaked, summoning a cloud of crystal steam. The steam would turn purple and a piece of the toxic chain would appear. Kieran covered his mouth in terror as the steam cleared.

“N-no way…” He squeaked. “S-Sis?!”

Carmine was surrounded by Toxic Chains, her Blueberry Academy Winter Uniform and black and Scarlet Hair flowing like she was underwater, her eyes were closed as if she was sleeping, but she had a pained expression… like she was trapped and she wanted to get out. Like she didn’t want any of this to happen. Like she was trying to call for help.

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (44)

“Sis… is that you?” Kieran tried to reach out to her.

Ki…ki…” A voice rang. It was Carmine’s voice. Her mouth wasn’t opening for her to speak. It was like she was trying to talk via Terapagos. “Kiki… please… help… I want… to wake… up… from this nightmare… I… didn’t want… any of this to… happen… Help me… Kiki…

Is Carmine… calling for help?” Juliana thought to herself. “And… is she… actually struggling? Now that I think about it… the way she behaved towards the League Club Members, especially Drayton and Lacey… that wasn’t Carmine at all… it was Pecharunt controlling her… but the attitude was Carmine herself…

The illusion then disappeared. Kieran was shaking. The person he saw was his sister, and the voice he heard was hers. He never knew… that when he had confronted her at Loyalty Plaza for stealing the Teal Mask, it was the beginning of her being trapped in the Toxic Chain.

“Kieran?” Lacey went to him. “Are you ok?”

“I-I’m fine.” Kieran turned to her. “I was… just thinking about what happened.”

“Tera?” Terapagos went to its trainer.

“Thank you, Terapagos.” Kieran smiled at the small turtle Pokémon. “If it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t have known what was happening with my Sis.”

“I never thought Terapagos would manipulate the Crystal Pool’s powers.” Juliana mused. “So Miss Briar was right, the Crystal Pool is connected to the Great Crater of Paldea. And now that we saw that power in Terapagos, there one thing we have to do.”

“That’s right.” Lacey nodded. “We have to return to Blueberry Academy and stop the Pokémon controlling Carmine… Pecharunt.”

“Let’s stop this Mochi Mayhem… right here, right now.” Kieran nodded.

The four students then went back to Kitakami Road to take their flight back to Blueberry Academy. The flight was long because it had been delayed so many times. When they arrived, it was nighttime, but the skies were purple because of Pecharunt’s Malignant Chain.

“What… happened?” Lacey covered his mouth in terror.

“Hey, you guys!” Crispin’s voice echoed as he, Amarys and Drayton ran to them.

“Crispin! Amarys! Drayton!” Gladys said as she, Lacey and Kieran ran up to the other Three Elite Four.

“Thank goodness you’re ok!!” Kieran cried. “I was so worried about you!”

“Apologies for making you worry.” Amarys said. “We had managed to evacuate some students to their dormitories while that Pokémon unleashed its wrath.”

“Unfortunately, we were not able to save everyone.” Drayton sighed. “We were worried we couldn’t find you when the… thing happened and-”

“What matters is that you guys are ok!” Crispin smiled. “Now what’s the plan, Chief Kieran?”

“M-Me?!” Kieran was shocked when Crispin called him Chief.

“Of course you’re the Chief, Little K.” Drayton smiles. “You put everyone together when your Sister was at its worst.”

“Everyone.” Kieran said, tearing up as Drayton said that he put everyone together. “The only thing we have to do is to defeat the Pokémon Controlling Sis.”

“Alright!” Crispin cheered. “Let’s do this!”

“The question is… where is Carmine?” Juliana asked.

“She is still at the Academy’s Entrance’s Battle Court.” Amarys answered. “She has been waiting for you, Juliana.”

“Let’s do this.” Lacey said.

Kieran, Juliana, Gladys and the Blueberry League approached the Battle Court at the entrance, where Carmine… or rather, Toxic Carmine was waiting for them.

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (45)

“Greetings, and Welcome to my lair.” She said. “You took your time, Juliana. You do know why I have trained so hard, right? You took Kiki away from me, you persuaded that evil Ogre to join you and you disgraced the Loyal Three. Now… this will be payback for all you did.”

“None of this is true.” Juliana said. “You are manipulating Carmine’s body. You are using her for your own deeds. And not only that, you caused Blueberry Academy so much trouble. Ogerpon was only trying to fit in with everyone alongside her first friend, but you made her the villain, by stealing the masks, hurting her friend and causing a misunderstanding.”

“Silence!” Pecharunt was speaking through Carmine now. “Carmine accepted me! She is my family right after that Ogre took down my three compatriots, Okidogi, Munkidori and Fezandipiti and separated me from my first family!”

“Stop this!” Kieran said. “Give me back my sis! And stop this madness! This… Mochi Mayhem!”

“And you…” Pecharunt used Carmine’s body to communicate with Kieran. “What do you plan to do, Kiki? You hurt your sister by working with that outsider. Yet, she holds no ill will towards you. But… what would you do if you were the one lied to instead of Carmine?”

“Stop.” Kieran said. “I do not want to answer that question. I’ll never hate Juliana or my Sis. I’m not gonna be taken by your toxic words. I will save my sis from you.”

“Very well…” Pecharunt huffed through Carmine. “Then you leave me no choice. Okidogi, Munkidori, Fezandipiti. Attack.”

The Loyal Three came out of their hiding spots to attack them, but a Petal Blizzard stopped their tracks. Juliana and Kieran turned around and saw Gladys send out her Comfey. Behind her, Lacey sent out Whimsicott, Drayton sent out Talonflame, Amarys sent out Skarmory and Drayton sent out Dragonite.

“Everyone…?” Juliana smiled.

“You go take care of that Pokémon and save Queen Bee Carmine.” Drayton said. “We’ll take care of these three lackeys.”

“Good luck.” Gladys said. “And save Carmine.”

“Thank you.” Kieran smiled.

Juliana and Kieran faced Pecharunt. Juliana sent out Wellspring Mask Ogerpon and Kieran sent out Terapagos.

“We begin this Ultimate Battle!!” Pecharunt communicated through Carmine’s body. “I will make Carmine’s Desire to defeat you come true!!”

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (46)

Terapagos transformed into its Terastal Form.

“It’s time, Kieran.” Juliana turned to Kieran, with confidence in her voice.

“Yes.” Kieran nodded. “Time to Terastalize!”

Kieran and Juliana charged their Tera Orbs, which were given unlimited charges alongside Lacey’s and Gladys’ Tera Orbs, and Terastalized Terapagos into its Stellar Form and Ogerpon’s Wellspring Mask respectively.

“Terapagos! Tera Starstorm!” Kieran shouted.

“Ogerpon! Ivy Cudgel!” Juliana commanded.

Their attacks hit Pecharunt as Pecharunt unleashed a Malignant chain, badly poisoning Ogerpon and confusing her with its Poison Puppeteer ability, however, because of her close bond with Juliana, she dispelled the toxic poison and snapped out of confusion faster.

As the battles continued, Okidogi, Munkidori and Fezandipiti were defeated, however, Lacey and Gladys’ Pokémon were defeated due to Fairy and Grass being weak to poison, Crispin’s Pokémon are poisoned due to Toxic Chain and Amarys and Drayton would have joined, but decided to tend to their clubmates.

Pehcarunt was running low on energy, its connection with Carmine was getting weaker and weaker…

“No…” Pecharunt communicated through Carmine. “This… wasn’t supposed to happen… I have… to fufill her wish…”

“Unfortunately, we will ot allow it.” Juliana said coldly. “Ogerpon. Ivy Cudgel.”

With a Wellspring Mask-powered Ivy Cudgel, Ogerpon defeated Pecharunt. The four Pokéball shattered as Pecharunt started losing control of Carmine. Pecharunt, Okidogi, Munkidori and Fezandipit have been released, with the Loyal Three running away as their Master was losing more and more control.

“No…” Pecharunt used the last of its connection with Carmine. “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!”

Pecharunt transformed into its Toy form and went into a slumber, losing its connection to Carmine and the Toxic Chain surrounding the Blueberry Academy disappeared. Carmine collapsed to the ground with Kieran catching her.

“Sis!” He called out to her.

“Carmine!” Juliana, Gladys and Lacey called out. Crispin, Amarys and Drayton stayed behind.

Carmine opened her eyes. They were back to normal. Her yellow irises with black pupils looked at her younger brother.

“Ki…ki…?” She said weakly.

“Sis…” Kieran said, tears streaming down his eyes.

A Dark Path Walked - AuraMage111 - Pocket Monsters: Scarlet & Violet (47)

“Thank you… and… I’m… sorry.” Carmine looked down.

“I-I’m happy to s-see and s-speak to y-you again… Carmine…” Kieran didn’t care that his older sister was controlled, he was happy to see her.

“Kiki…” Tears streamed down Carmine’s eyes. “You… I… * sniffle * WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHH!!”

Carmine started crying as she held her beloved little brother. She was finally freed from the nightmare she was facing.

“Welcome back… Carmine…” Kieran sobbed. “You’re… back… WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!”

Kieran also started crying.

“Kieran… Carmine…” Juliana said as she dried her tears.

“You both must have suffered a lot.” Gladys said. “But… I’m happy you are all ok. In the end, everything is back to normal.”

“I agree.” Lacey nodded “I think we all deserve a nice break. Go back to our studies… And I think… return to League Club activities if Carmine wants.”

“Yeah.” Gladys nodded.

As the days passed, Carmine recovered from what happened to her and the first thing she did was apologize to everyone in Blueberry Academy and the League Club for the way she acted, but she did not expect that everyone would easily forgive her. They missed the Carmine everyone knew, the tsundere older sister who would do anything for Kieran. She had also resigned from the League Club rankings since she believed she didn’t deserve her spot as the BB League Champion, but Juliana didn’t want to accept the resignation yet, so she challenged Carmine for the title so the latter could resign in peace.

“Juliana, are you sure?” Carmine asked with hesitation. “You know I-”

“Don’t be scared, Carmine.” Juliana smiled. “We’re friends. Let’s just battle like we did in Kitakami, for fun!”

“Friends…” Carmine smiled sadly before nodding. “Alrignt, I’ll give you the best battle that will make you eat Blueberry Dirt!”

“Sis! Juliana!” Kieran said as he and Gladys arrived. “Before the battle starts, can we take a picture?”

“A picture? Already?” Juliana asked.

“Kieran said it’s to commemorate our friendship.” Gladys said.

“Of course.” Carmine smiled. “Hey, Juliana, can I borrow your Roto-Stick again?”

“Of course.” Juliana smiled as she gave her Roto-Stick to Carmine so they could take a picture to remember the best days of their friendship and their time in Blueberry Academy.
