Which Primary Professions Should You Choose in WoW Cata? (2024)

With Azeroth’s current state being so chaotic, our primary goal should be to defeat Deathwing and restore order to our world. Primary professions can help in this goal by providing valuable buffs, allowing you to create gear, and helping you rake in the big bucks.

Of course, secondary professions serve their own purposes—that is a discussion for another article, though. This article will explain the basics of primary professions in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Classic and help you choose which ones to pursue based on your playstyle.

📌 The Basics

Each character has two primary profession slots. You can learn two gathering professions, two crafting professions, or one of each.

  • Gathering professions such as Skinning focus on collecting raw materials which can then be converted to valuable goods or sold to other players.
  • Crafting professions such as Leatherworking focus on converting raw materials into valuable goods, such as armor.

Your race, class, and goals will all factor in when you decide which two professions to pursue. Ultimately, though, it boils down to personal choice. No one can make this decision for you, but with this guide, your choice may become clear.

There are general trainers scattered throughout the lands who can teach you the basics of any primary profession. These trainers are listed below.

Which Primary Professions Should You Choose in WoW Cata? (2)

You may be wondering what your toon should look like to maximize your Herbalism experience. The following bullet points go over what the ideal herbalist looks like in WoW.

  • Race
    • Tauren have a racial passive that allows them to gather herbs faster and at an increased level.
  • Class
    • Druids don’t have to leave flight form to gather herbs, which makes them excellent for this task.
  • Profession Pairings
    • Alchemy and Inscription both require a lot of herbs, so it is not a bad idea to pair one of these two with Herbalism. If you’d prefer two gathering professions, Mining or Skinning both work well with this one. Mining may prove slightly more profitable.
  • Other Details
    • The Flight Master’s License will make the process of leveling Herbalism a lot easier, as it will allow you to fly in all Cataclysm zones.

These are not requirements. Anyone with any toon can enjoy and make use of Herbalism.

Which Primary Professions Should You Choose in WoW Cata? (3)

But wait! Why go through the effort of learning Herbalism? Probably should’ve covered that first…but oh well, here’s a few reasons to learn this profession!

  • Profession Ability
    • Lifeblood is an ability that grows as you level up your Herbalism skill. It grants increased haste and minor wound healing for a brief period of time. It is on a two minute cooldown. While this ability isn’t as strong as what some of the other professions offer, it still has value in situations where you may need a quick heal or haste.
  • Leveling
    • Gathering herbs now grants experience! This is determined by your level compared to the level of the zone you’re gathering in.
  • Gold Farming
    • The WoW Token prices are still fairly low, making right now an excellent time to farm for gold. Twilight Jasmine, found in the zone Twilight Highlands, often proves the most profitable herb across realms and servers. Your individual circ*mstances may vary, so it is always good to check prior to dedicating.

If you’re someone who dried out their pet cactus, WoW Herbalism may be your redemption.

🪨 Mining

Mining requires either a vigorous core body workout routine or a PC with World of Warcraft: Classic installed. Take your pick. Depending on which of those two options you’d prefer, you can either look for job openings in your area, move to the mountains and have a better chance at landing a job, or look below for virtual trainers.

Which Primary Professions Should You Choose in WoW Cata? (4)

But what should your toon look like?

  • Class
    • Druids make excellent gatherers in general thanks to their travel forms.
  • Profession Pairings
    • Blacksmithing, Engineering, and Jewelcrafting are all viable profession pairings. Jewelcrafters will likely benefit the most, as they need five minerals for each prospect. If you’d prefer two gathering professions, either Herbalism or Skinning will work depending on your personal tastes.
  • Other Details
    • The Flight Master’s License will make the process of leveling Mining a lot easier, as it will allow you to fly in all Cataclysm zones.

Again, these are only suggestions, not a requirement by any means to enjoy Mining.

Which Primary Professions Should You Choose in WoW Cata? (5)

Again, why learn Mining? Here’s a few reasons to learn this profession!

  • Profession Ability
    • Toughness is a passive trait skilled miners develop. It grants increased stamina. The exact amount is determined by your skill.
  • Leveling
    • Mining ore now grants experience! This is determined by your level compared to the level of the zone you’re gathering in.
  • Gold Farming
    • The WoW Token prices are still fairly low, making now an excellent time to farm for gold. Pyrite ore often fetches the highest price due to its rarity. Your individual circ*mstances may vary, so it is always good to check prior to dedicating.

Even if you failed every geology course you ever took, there is hope. Give up on academics and play WoW!

Which Primary Professions Should You Choose in WoW Cata? (6)

What does the best toon look like for a great Skinning experience?

  • Race
    • Worgen are naturally excellent skinners. They can skin quicker and have increased skill. Trolls have an edge against beasts, so they can kill skinnable creatures more efficiently compared to other races.
  • Class
    • If you plan to run around and skin the corpses left behind by other players, you may want to play a Druid. If not, any class that can kill quickly and survive long fights will work.
  • Profession Pairings
    • Leatherworking and Skinning work exceptionally well together, as leatherworkers almost always need more materials.

Can’t stress enough that these are not requirements. Anyone can enjoy and make use of Skinning.

Which Primary Professions Should You Choose in WoW Cata? (7)

Why Skinning?

  • Profession Ability
    • Master of Anatomy, the profession ability for Skinning, gives an extra +80 critical strike rating.
  • Ease
    • Unlike other gathering professions, you won’t need to search for specific routes a lot of the time. You’ll naturally run into skinnable mobs as you level. This makes Skinning the best profession for beginners.
  • Gold Farming
    • The WoW Token prices are still fairly low, making now an excellent time to farm for gold. Blackened Dragonscales can fetch higher prices compared to the other new leathers, making it profitable to farm. Your individual circ*mstances may vary, so it is always good to check prior to dedicating.

One quick tip, make sure the beast you’re about to skin isn’t a sleeping Druid!

Alchemy is one of the most adaptive professions in Classic. You can produce items to aid in combat, gold farming, or even mount collecting! Just try not to blow anything up.

Which Primary Professions Should You Choose in WoW Cata? (8)

Now, what kind of toon can maximize your Alchemy experience?

  • Race
    • Goblins have the racial passive Better Living Through Chemistry, which increases their Alchemy skill. They’re also known for making things combust, so if you’re worried about accidental explosions…just blame them on your Goblin nature. You’ll be forgiven.
  • Profession Pairings
    • Herbalists gather many of the materials used in Alchemy recipes. As such, it isn’t a bad idea to have a toon that knows both.
  • Other Details
    • You’ll want quite a bit of gold to spend on materials, especially while leveling.

These are not requirements. Anyone with any toon can enjoy and make use of Alchemy.

Which Primary Professions Should You Choose in WoW Cata? (9)

So, why Alchemy?

  • Profession Ability
    • Mixology, the inherent perk of Alchemy, grants you increased effects from elixirs and flasks so long as you can make them.
  • Fun
    • Deepstone Oil allows you to take on several interesting, screenshot worthy poses. If you’re also an archeologist, you can eventually discover how to turn into a dragon. There are more, but those two perks of Alchemy make it the most worthwhile.
  • Gold Farming
    • The WoW Token prices are still fairly low, making right now an excellent time to farm for gold. Potions of Treasure Finding can be sold individually for around 100 gold each or they can be used to find additional materials when farming, making them highly profitable. Your individual circ*mstances may vary, so it is always good to check prior to dedicating.

Cool guys make alchemical explosions. Be a cool guy.

🔨 Blacksmithing

Blacksmithing brings the heat! Really, though, you gotta imagine how hot and sweaty blacksmiths must get. Or even worse, how high the average temperature of Ironforge is–it’s a miracle that there’s snow within a thirty-mile radius! If the sweltering heat doesn’t bother you, go ask one of these trainers how to forge mighty weapons. They’ll certainly teach you.

What does the ideal Blacksmith look like?

  • Class
    • Plate armor wearing classes work well here, as they can directly benefit from the profession.
  • Profession Pairings
    • Mining and Blacksmithing work well together. Blacksmiths need a lot of metal, and unless you have a fountain of gold, Mining is often the best way to get it.
  • Other Details
    • Gold is a necessity for buying materials.

These are not requirements. Anyone with any toon can enjoy and make use of Blacksmithing.

Which Primary Professions Should You Choose in WoW Cata? (11)

Why should you go through the effort of learning Blacksmithing?

  • Profession Ability
    • With Blacksmithing, you can gain two additional sockets for your gear. This will usually mean an extra +80 to your stat of choice, making this profession well worth it for those indulging in endgame content.
  • Utility
    • Do Rogues unnerve you? Good. They really should. Blacksmiths can make Obsidium Skeleton Keys, allowing you to avoid outlaws and pick locks!
  • Gold Farming
    • The WoW Token prices are still fairly low, making right now an excellent time to farm for gold. Useful items such as Pyrium Weapon Chains can go for over 100 gold at times, making their recipes valuable to have on hand. Your individual circ*mstances may vary, so it is always good to check prior to dedicating.

If the heat ever gets to you, take a trip to Northrend.

🧙🏼 Enchanting

Ever wanted to be a fairytale prince or princess who could enchant items to do boring tasks? Well, World of Warcraft takes a slightly more bloody take on that concept. Instead of randomly finding your laundry done, you’ll find yourself randomly dodging attacks that could end your legacy. Doesn’t that sound fun to you? Well, it sounded fun to these enchanters, now skilled enough to train you!

Which Primary Professions Should You Choose in WoW Cata? (12)

You may be wondering what your toon should look like to maximize your Enchanting experience. The following bullet points go over what the ideal enchanter looks like in WoW.

  • Race
    • Blood Elves have the racial passive Arcane Affinity, which increases their Enchanting skill.
  • Profession Pairings
    • Tailors produce crafted items that can be disenchanted and repurposed into dusts. Tailoring and Enchanting go well together thanks to this.
  • Other Details
    • Like other crafting professions, you’ll want plenty of gold on hand.

These are not requirements. Anyone with any toon can enjoy and make use of Enchanting.

Which Primary Professions Should You Choose in WoW Cata? (13)

But wait! Why Enchanting?

  • Profession Ability
    • Enchanters can increase their stats by enchanting their rings. Since you have two rings, this can add up to a hefty advantage.
  • Pets
    • You can make a Magic Lamp to follow you around. That’s all the convincing you should need.
  • Gold Farming
    • The WoW Token prices are still fairly low, making right now an excellent time to farm for gold. That aforementioned Magic Lamp is going for well over a thousand gold in some places! Your individual circ*mstances may vary, so it is always good to check prior to dedicating.

Remember to apply your enchants after you make them!

Beep? Boop? Is the translator still not working? Dang, I guess I’ll need a stronger hammer! The last one broke when I smacked it.

Which Primary Professions Should You Choose in WoW Cata? (14)

You may be wondering what your toon should look like to maximize your Engineering experience. The following bullet points go over what the ideal engineer looks like in WoW.

  • Race
    • Gnomes have a natural talent for smacking things with hammers and, unlike me, making them work that way. Thanks to their increased skill in Engineering, they’re the most obvious choice.
  • Class
    • Most ranged classes appreciate the Loot-A-Rang device that can be created by Engineers, especially when leveling. Also, a lot of bursty DPS specializations will like the main profession ability.
  • Profession Pairings
    • Mining and Engineering go well together, as engineers need a source of metal and miners need a source of joy.
  • Other Details
    • You’ll once again want a lot of gold for materials. You’ll also want a lot of patience, as some recipes must be discovered by crafting others.

These are not requirements. Anyone with any toon can enjoy and make use of Engineering.

Which Primary Professions Should You Choose in WoW Cata? (15)

But wait! Why go through the effort of learning Engineering?

  • Profession Ability
    • Synapse Springs can give you a quick boost to your highest primary stat. If used regularly, it can average out to +80 of that stat.
  • Fun and Chaos
    • You can blow things up with a Big Daddy bomb, collect the remains with a Loot-A-Rang, and then ride away into the night on a Mechano-Hog with your trusty Personal World Destroyer trying to keep up. Sounds badass, right?
  • Gold Farming
    • The WoW Token prices are still fairly low, making right now an excellent time to farm for gold. Lil’ Smoky, a friendly robot companion made by skilled engineers, can be sold for over 100 gold. If you want a reason besides cuteness to start crafting these fellas, that’s your reason. Your individual circ*mstances may vary, so it is always good to check prior to dedicating.

Hello? Is this in the right language now? Finally! You have no idea how many hammers I broke trying to fix this translator…

📜 Inscription

Back in the day, only select individuals learned how to be scribes. At least that’s what high school taught me about ancient Egypt. Looking at Uldum, a zone inspired by Egyptian history, we can see that things have changed. Scribes can now make Glyphs to make spells deadlier, more cost-efficient, or even make you look cool. On top of that, nowadays, anyone can learn how to be a scribe with the help of these trainers!

  • Neutral Trainers
    • Scribe Lanloer, Shattrath (56.6, 74.6)
    • Recorder Lidio, Shattrath (36.2, 44.6)
    • Professor Pallin, Dalaran (42.6, 37.6)
    • Arthur Denny, Icecrown (71.6, 20.8)
  • Alliance Trainers
    • Tink Brightbolt, Borean Tundra (57.6, 71.6)
    • Thoth, The Exodar (40.6, 39.0)
    • Mindri Dinkles, Howling Fjord (58.2, 62.6)
    • Michael Schwan, Hellfire Peninsula (54.0, 65.6)
    • Feyden Darkin, Darnassus (56.6, 31.6)
    • Elise Brightletter, Ironforge (61.6, 45.2)
    • Catarina Stanford, Stormwind (49.8, 74.4)
  • Horde Trainers
    • Zantasia, Silvermoon City (69.6, 24.6)
    • Poshken Hardbinder, Thunder Bluff (29.2, 21.8)
    • Nerog, Orgimmar (55.2, 55.8)
    • Neferatti, Hellfire Peninsula (52.2, 36.0)
    • Margaux Parchley, Undercity (61.0, 58.6)
    • Jo’mah, Orgrimmar (56.2, 46.6)
    • Booker Kells, Howling Fjord (79.4, 29.2)
    • Adelene Sunlance, Borean Tundra (41.2, 53.8)

Which Primary Professions Should You Choose in WoW Cata? (16)

Forget everything you’ve heard about aliens and the pyramids. Clearly, all they had to do was use the right Glyphs!

  • Now, what does the ideal toon for Inscription look like?Class
    • The best class for Inscription is the one you enjoy the most, as all classes benefit from Glyphs. However, if you’re a Shadow Priest who despises Shadowform, you’ll find the Glyph of Shadow item to be incredibly helpful for showing off your transmog.
  • Profession Pairings
    • Scribes need ink, and ink is made from herbs. Due to this, Inscription and Herbalism pair well together.
  • Other Details
    • Are you tired of hearing that crafting professions need gold yet?

These are not requirements. Anyone with any toon can enjoy and make use of Inscription.

Which Primary Professions Should You Choose in WoW Cata? (17)

All you need to know before going through the effort of learning Inscription?

  • Profession Ability
    • Scribes get unique and powerful shoulder enchants as their exclusive perk. This can save you from reputation grinds while also providing better benefits.
  • Origami
    • You can make an Origami Rock. That’s right, a rock made out of paper. Just add in the scissors and you’ve got a whole paradox.
  • Gold Farming
    • The WoW Token prices are still fairly low, making right now an excellent time to farm for gold. While it’s not much, the daily quest Forged Documents can make some consistent gold if you’re a scribe. It’s easier than playing the Auction House for sure, although not nearly as profitable. Your individual circ*mstances may vary, so it is always good to check prior to dedicating.

Rituals of the New Moon turns you into a wolf, the Origami Rock turns you insane as you try to comprehend it, and Inscription can turn you into a respected WoW player if you try it out. This is what King Tut died for.

These are not requirements. Anyone with any toon can enjoy and make use of Jewelcrafting.

But wait! Why should you go through the effort of learning Jewelcrafting? Probably should’ve covered that first…but oh well, here’s a few reasons to learn this profession!

  • Profession Ability
    • You can equip up to three Chimera’s Eye Gems, increasing your stats greatly.

👢 Leatherworking

Those shiny rocks were tasty, but now I’m in the mood for some jerky. Luckily, this section is all about Leatherworking! Which Primary Professions Should You Choose in WoW Cata? (21)

Why go through the effort of learning Leatherworking?

  • Profession Ability
    • Bracer enchants are here! With these enchants, you can get perks such as an extra +195 stamina.

    • You don’t have to just make armor. Leg armor kits, drums to signal battle, and rare stylish hats are also possibilities!
  • Gold Farming
    • The WoW Token prices are still fairly low, making right now an excellent time to farm for gold. Most of the Stylin’ hats sell for large sums of gold, which makes sense–they have a low drop rate for the recipe. Your individual circ*mstances may vary, so it is always good to check prior to dedicating.

Unfortunately, you can’t make flavorful jerky with this profession. For that, you’ll need to visit cooking, a secondary profession.

🧵 Tailoring

Finishing up strong with Tailoring! If you’ve been battling humanoid mobs, you’ve probably amassed a collection of cloth. This is the profession where that cloth is best used. Ask these trainers where they got their shirt and they’ll teach you how to make your own!

The ideal toon for your Tailoring experience?

  • Class
    • Tailors can create cloth gear, so any class that makes use of this gear will see benefit.
  • Profession Pairings
    • Enchanters often use items created by tailors for disenchanting. Tailoring and Enchanting work well together because of their connection in that.
  • Other Details
    • This is the last time you’ll hear me say that you need gold. I promise.

These are not requirements. Anyone with any toon can enjoy and make use of Tailoring.

Which Primary Professions Should You Choose in WoW Cata? (23)

Here’s all you need to know about picking Tailoring!

  • Profession Ability
    • Embroidery can turn your cloak into the occasional harbinger of powerful buffs. Available buffs include an increase to spirit, attack power, or intellect. These buffs are triggered by chance upon spells being used.
  • Aesthetics
    • As a tailor, you can make many things, including a Fireweave Cowl or a High Society Top Hat. Fireweave Cowls boast an impressive item level of 339, making them quite useful in combat. High Society Top Hats have an item level of 1, making them utterly useless in anything other than a fashion competition. That, along with the flying carpets, should sufficiently show just how versatile Tailoring is. Try to keep the blood on your Boots of the Black Flame and away from your Dress Shoes!
  • Gold Farming
    • The WoW Token prices are still fairly low, making right now an excellent time to farm for gold. Rustic Workman’s Shirts, a fine choice for transmog fans, can sell for over 200 gold quite easily. Your individual circ*mstances may vary, so it is always good to check prior to dedicating.

Don’t beg for the shirt off someone’s back! Just make your own.
