Ottumwa Symphony presents Music on the Green (6)

OTTUMWA — The Ottumwa Symphony Orchestra will host an evening of music under the open sky. Music on the Green, an event that has become a favorite for attendees, will be held Sunday, June 9 at 7 p.m. on the Marge Dodd Stage at Indian Hills Community College. Associate Conductor David Sharp will take up his baton for the event once again to lead the musicians.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair and picnic supper to enjoy as the orchestra plays.

"Every year, I try to bring a variety of musical sounds to our diverse audience, and this year will be no different," Sharp said. "I have arranged most of the music for this concert. This year’s performance will feature a concert overture, swing and Latin tunes, show tunes, music from television series, and hits by Simon and Garfunkel and Frank Sinatra."

Jim Clingman and Sarah Johnson, both local to the Ottumwa area, will be featured vocalists.

Jim Clingman

A graduate of the University of Iowa, Jim and his wife, Judy, own and operate Bridge City Realty in Ottumwa and Oskaloosa. An experienced vocalist, he has performed with the Ottumwa Symphony, Ottumwa Community Players, the Ottumwa Municipal Band, Oskaloosa Community Theatre and Iowa City Community Theater.

Jim served for many years on the Wapello County Board of Review, and currently serves as the Chairman of the Iowa Real Estate Commission, which oversees all licensed real estate agents throughout the state. The Clingmans make their home in Ottumwa and are the parents of five adult children and three grandchildren.

Sarah Deaton Johnson

A native of Davis County, Sarah began studying voice at an early age, continuing through her college years, with emphasis on Broadway, opera, jazz, spiritual and classical genres. Her passion for music continues to this day and she enjoys performing whenever the opportunity arises.

Sarah is a real estate sales professional with Bridge City Realty and works in both the Ottumwa and Oskaloosa offices, focusing on listing and selling residential real estate. She and her husband, Brandon have one son, Samuel. The Johnson family makes their home in Wapello County.

Bring a picnic, your favorite beverage, a comfortable chair, and, of course, your friends and family. In case of rain or inclement weather, the concert will be moved indoors to the Hellyer Student Life Center directly next to the stage. In the event of cancellation, the public will be notified by 3 p.m. There is no charge for admission, though a free-will offering will be taken.

The event is sponsored by the Ottumwa Regional Legacy Foundation.
