>> good afternoon, i'm james torres. it's the friday kicking off memorial day weekend, and we already have some trouble in traffic. behind me here is a caltrans camera that shows a big rig that caught fire over here on the right right hand side of this screen, there was a fire truck that was blocking some of those lanes. this is the westbound side of the bay bridge headed toward yerba buena island. if you're headed to san francisco, three lanes of traffic are still moving at this point, but all of that behind it is moving pretty slow. we'll take you live now at the bay bridge midway span, where you can see traffic is backed up quite a bit. you'd have to really get into the screen there because there is just a little bit of fogginess hanging out on top of the bay bridge. at this point, it will likely take you more than an hour to get to san francisco from oakland. here's what we're learning. the san francisco fire department posted this video on x showing the truck's trailer fully involved in flames. we're not sure if the truck crashed. we're learning the trailer was filled with produce and a detached after the fire started. there are no reports of any injuries. the

cause of the fire, we still don't know just yet, but the fire department says the trailer's rear, the rear brakes may have overheated. we'll take you live now over to the bay bridge toll plaza. a better idea of just how much this traffic is backing up. we'll keep an eye on it and update you once the scene is clear. and if you're staying put for a memorial day, let's take a look at your weather meteorologist, roberta gonzalez joins us now with what kind of temperatures you can expect to see over the next few days. roberta. >> oh, james, i believe we all feel the difference already. it's a wind of change. take a look at our live weather camera at this hour. it's may gray. it is a gray slate from the coast. all the way into our inland areas. bank of cloudiness down roughly about 1200 feet. so not obscuring visibility around the bay or in the city, but along the sea shore. we do have some coastal fog and some cloudiness. only 54 degrees there. 53 in oakland. check out the tri-valley at 61 degrees, we have now jumped up to 68 in

santa rosa, but boy, the other side of the story happens to be the very gusty winds 27 mile per hour gusts right here, right now in the nicasio area. concord buchanan field with the 29 mile per hour gusts, temperature in comparison to yesterday, with the windy conditions going down substantially in some areas, anywhere from 10 to 15 degrees. go ahead and pinpoint your neighborhood. we're talking about temperatures from 58 degrees on pacifica, and even slightly cooler than that in half moon bay. this is your friday forecast, and these winds are going to stay with us throughout the afternoon and into the evening hours as well. we're talking only 70 degrees when the average highs right around 79 in throughout livermore and pleasanton. 60s pretty common around the peninsula today and 72 degrees in napa. if you're heading to bottle rock. and everyone i know is while you're going to have to dress in layers substantially cooler today and gusty winds same on saturday with additional meltdown in the temperatures. but a pleasant day for your

sunday. hey james, next time around we'll talk more about the memorial day forecast. and just for you, i will even feature a pollen report. >> looking forward to it. roberta. thank you. the doors, of course, are now open at bottlerock in napa. the festival is hosted by the napa valley expo. it kicked off, or rather kicks off this afternoon at 1230 with performances from grace bowers, stevie nicks, megan thee stallion, nelly and bebe rexha are also set to perform today. one day tickets are still available for today. they'll cost you nearly $250. week end performances include pearl jam and ed sheeran, but those shows are already sold out. we'll have a live report from bottlerock coming up right here at 1230. in san francisco, the 46th annual carnival festival is taking over the mission district. it's a two day festival starting tomorrow, highlighting latin culture from all types of countries. it's full of food, music, dancing, lots of colors, a giant parade that happens sunday morning. i had a chance to speak to the festival's executive director, who says the festival gives you

a little taste of everything from everywhere. >> here, what we have that's so unique is that we talk about and we showcase, nicaraguan culture, jamaican. and then we go to mexico and then we go to brazil, colombia, and then we go to cuba and guatemala. so you get all of that in our special carnival in san francisco. >> the event is free. you can find it along harrison street between 16th and 24th. and if the bay bridge wasn't any example, expect some delays on the roadways this afternoon. expect travel, experts say right now is the start of the busiest travel time of memorial day weekend. we are monitoring all the major roadways across the bay area from now until 7:00. tonight will be the most congested today, triple a predicts about 44 million. americans will do some type of traveling this holiday weekend, with 38.5 million of those by car. >> we recommend getting out before 11:00 if you can, or if your night out will not leaving until after 7 p.m. and if you're

traveling back on memorial day on that monday, as many of us are going to do, wait until after dinner time. really, after 6 or 7 p.m. that way you'll have the clearest traffic out there. >> triple a says most of us are eager for adventure, so both roadways and airports should be packed throughout the summer. population for popular destinations include las vegas and florida. we're already seeing long lines at bay area airports. this was the scene our crews found at san francisco bay, oakland international airport as people waited for security. air travel is at the highest level in five years this weekend, with more than 3 million people expected to fly to their destinations. just today alone. some people we spoke to were prepared. >> we got here three hours early, tsa takes us a long time, so but the lines have been really long, so hopefully we can get through. >> while there have been some long lines for bag checks and tsa at last check, there have not been any major issues. of course, that could change as the day goes on. we'll keep an eye

on that for you. airlines advised to double check your boarding pass, and of course, always give yourself plenty of extra time. you might get a little relief at the gas pump this weekend. gas prices are falling nationwide, including here in california. the national average this morning is about a nickel less than a month ago. however, prices are about a nickel higher than this time last year. politicians on both aisles pointing fingers. republicans are blaming democrats for discouraging energy exploration while democrats blame big oil instead of working to lower gas prices for americans ahead of a busy memorial day weekend, big oil company executives are huddling to find ways to keep prices high and keep their profits soaring. a-a-a-ah predicts a 4% increase in car travel this holiday weekend compared to last memorial day. california is averaging $5.13 a gallon for gas. napa has about the highest price in the bay area at 549, just in time for bottlerock san

francisco, averaging about 533 a gallon. oakland at 526. in san jose, gas is 522 a gallon, all of which are down slightly from yesterday. we're following a developing story out of oakland. police detained two people after a shooting at skyline high school's graduation last night. three people were hurt. ktvu is amanda quintana reporting the latest? >> i was just taking pictures of the graduates. you know, i was going great because we're graduating, you know, it's graduation. and then next thing you know, i hear like the gunshots. at first i thought it was fireworks, but i seen people running. so you know, i was just running with them, you know, shots rang out toward the end of skyline high school's graduation ceremony just before eight thursday night, causing chaos on campus. >> i saw a lot of people crying. i saw a lot of people getting worried, panicking and running the opposite direction, of course, and as as we would all expect, this mother was frantically looking for her daughter. >> you know, i just came to get her and he was like a nice scene. i didn't see someone that got shot too, and i saw the

group of guys and they shot again near our car, where we were parked. so pretty much unfortunately, a high school graduation to end like this is horrible. there needs to be better. >> when police arrived, they found two adult victims, a man and a woman on the north side of the campus. they were transported to the hospital and are expected to be okay. a third person transported themselves to the hospital. >> we do know there were, multiple suspects, but we're trying to identify exactly how many police said they're investigating a fight that might have happened right before the shooting. >> officers have detained two people. it's unclear if either of those two were the shooter or were even arrested. the new police chief, floyd mitchell, was at his first police commission meeting at the time and left to go to the scene. you may remember there was also a shooting at skyline at the start of the school year back in september. that time, students hid under desks and in closets for hours as the school was on lockdown. no one was injured

then. >> definitely on a day like this , some of the students are graduated. there's supposed to be the happiest day of their lives. i don't it's crazy. i just hope that they can put this in the past and move forward and make sure this doesn't happen again. >> police believe this was an isolated incident. we've reached out to opd and hope to get an update today in oakland. amanda quintana, ktvu, fox two news political, community and health care leaders in santa clara county are stepping up their fight to save the trauma center at regional medical center of san jose. >> the group is urging state attorney general rob bonta to investigate what they're calling a, quote, discriminatory closure of a critical health care facility. they say shutting down the trauma center would lead to delayed care and urgent medical situations for many low income families. it's set to close in august. a hospital says it's because it's not enough people are using the trauma center. if it does shut down. the closest trauma centers to the area are miles away at santa clara valley medical center and stanford hospital. new at noon, a video

game giant is opening a new store in san francisco's troubled union square. nintendo today announcing plans to open a new store next year in union square. it will be only the company's second store in the united states. the other in new york city. it also has three of its home, three in its home country of japan. in a statement to ktvu, nintendo says the store will provide a way for visitors to experience the world of nintendo, its product and characters. of course, this is contrast to a range of companies leaving union square, including macy's, which announced it is departing the shopping district back in february. turning to technology, a police department along the peninsula is getting creative when it comes to crime fighting. plus, shutting down its midwest operations, lagunitas brewing eyes a comeback to where it was first created here in the bay area

tracker, the program is in its infancy, but some residents say it may already be a success. the threat of having a tracer in place could maybe, give, thieves second thoughts about, you know, hitting that house. >> atherton police say they'll also bring in the use of their traffic cameras to help track tracers that are moving through the town. they concede it will take time to tell if the rate of burglaries continues ascending past last year's total, or if it drops precipitously in atherton. jesse gary ktvu, fox two news. >> lagunitas brewing is closing its operation in the midwest and is moving all of its brewing back to petaluma. the company opened its chicago brewing operation ten years ago, and it expanded into the eastern half of the u.s. but now it's closing that huge brewery in august and consolidating all that brewing back to the north bay. lagunitas says it is working to future proof the organization amid changing tides in the industry.

at the age of 53, spurlock's family confirmed he died a result of complications from cancer. morgan spurlock was best known for his documentary where for 30 days he only ate food from mcdonald's. they made $22 million at the box office back in 2004, and sparked a conversation about fast food. mcdonald's got rid of the supersize option after the release of the film. developing news now, where we're learning that a couple from the u.s. was killed by gunmen in port au prince, haiti, missouri state representative ben baker posted a photo of the couple on his facebook page. he is the father of natalie lloyd. she and her husband, david lloyd, were among three people shot and killed as they left a group activity at a local church last night. they

oakland police telling us as of just about a half hour ago, as people were leaving the ceremony, two groups of people got into a fight in the school parking lot. as that fight escalated, three people were eventually shot. they are all expected to be okay. they have now arrested one person. police are still looking for other shooters as well as witnesses. they ask anyone who might have video or photos of the incident to give opd a call. memorial day weekend in the bay area kicks off with the bottlerock music festival. doors just opened in napa valley and we have ktvu tom vacar live there now with what you can expect if you're headed north to this year's event. tom vacar. what are you seeing out there? >> well, i want you to see it. this is bottlerock. this is the premier music wine and food festival that everybody across the nation and really around the world knows. it's now in its 11th year. it never stopped, even during the pandemic. was delayed a little bit. for 11

years. they've been rocking here and talking and having a lot of fun. it is sold out for the weekend. but here's the good news there is still general admission tickets available for today only, and since it's open till 10:00, you got plenty of time to get up here. but mind you, there will be traffic and you can partake in this event. now they have a capacity of 40,000 people, generally keeping a little under that to make sure it doesn't get too crowded. and what happens is that they've got some great acts, to say the least. ed sheeran, pearl jam, mana if you're coming up to napa to do anything else, do not avoid napa. simply avoid the area around the expo because that's the only place that's going to really have some serious traffic. the rest of napa is open, and those merchants and vineyards are really going to appreciate that. now, this is, again, decidedly one of the great tickets, one of the very great tickets in california music and festivals. and you are invited here to have

lives. they say 46 people died in car crashes during memorial day weekend last year. new at noon a beleaguered san francisco aquarium has now been stripped of a key accreditation. the association of zoos and aquariums announced today that it's removing aquarium of the bay's certification. it says it's over concerns about the aquarium's financial instability and staffing capabilities, and employee morale, and turnover. the aquarium of the bay's chairman says the accreditation is among the reasons why the board asked its president and ceo, george jacob, to resign wednesday. the aquarium will remain open despite the loss of accreditation. and new at noon, a group seeking the recall of oakland mayor shengtao says they have enough signatures to put the recall on the november ballot. the group called oakland united to recall shengtao says they collected more than 30,000 signatures, surpassing the required 25,000. they say when they collect over 40,000 signatures, then they will submit them for verification. they argue mayor tao has failed

in many ways to crack down on crime. >> the mayor, as you know, failed to apply for a grant that would have brought 15 to $20 million to oakland to fight retail theft. simply slept on it . missed the deadline, which has happened before. >> the group says they believe the recall will be successful. the point to a poll indicating that 56% of likely voters would vote to replace tao. a property in alameda that's listed for $400,000 sounds like a deal to potential buyers, but as ktvu jana katsuyama reports, there's just one complication the waterfront property is underwater. >> drive along grand street in alameda and you'll see a line of multi-million dollar homes. so when alameda county put a piece of property up for auction last year, the owner who bought the land for just over $100,000, said he was excited for the opportunity to own.

>> it is not easy to purchase a property. we tried, my wife and me since 2014. we were not able to do that. >> the lot is nestled in a lagoon surrounded by the alameda west lagoon homeowners association. but it was a shock when he and his real estate agent actually saw the lot. the property at 610 grand street is in the lagoon, 10,000ft!s, entirely underwater, and right next to a grand street bridge that boats go under to get from one side to another. >> these are, you know, an average working person, and you save up 100, no, $100,000, to lose it. it's heartbreaking. >> the real estate agent said she was surprised to learn the lot is actually zoned as a residential parcel. the owner has now put it up online for sale, clearly marked as an open water lot, the new listing is $400,000, and the realtor says the owner is hoping to recoup

highway 101 northf blossom hill road. aleast two lanes are shut down at this moment. authorities say if you're headed in that direction to expect delays or use alternate routes, there's no word on if there are any injuries or what caused that collision. we'll keep an eye on that story and bring you updates once we learn them. several business owners in san francisco's noe valley neighborhood are expressing their concerns about a planned paving project this summer. most of the work is scheduled to take place on 24th street. the city plans to repave that road and other surrounding streets while making improvements to the sidewalks and bus stops in noe valley, but some business owners say the four month project would keep people away during the important summertime. >> large sections of our commercial corridor are being blocked off. people will just avoid going. >> i know that the road here does need work, but but hopefully that the city can work with us with the merchant association and really work on something where it's a win win, win win situation. >> san francisco's public works department says these roads in

out. this is our marine layer and it's made it all the way inland towards monument peak, which stands 2500ft tall. this deck has been lowering down to about 1500 feet. we do have visibility restricted down to five miles in half moon bay with the cloudiness 54 degrees there. otherwise, we're sunny in concord at 62. sunshine at the rose garden district, back in through saratoga into also los gatos. now just a recap. we started off in flirting with 90 degrees on tuesday. we had mid 80s on wednesday, dipping into the high 70s yesterday and today. we're going to struggle to reach the low 70s inland cloud deck along the coast, also in southern california, just socked in in san diego. this is a perfectly aligned trough and watch when it digs through the bay area. this is our futurecast . and later on by the evening commute, you see, we begin to fill back in with the cloudiness. everybody except the north bay is mostly cloudy. saturday morning we wake up to

are still shut down. you're taking a live look here at a caltrans camera where again, it's really not looking much different than what we've seen the last couple of times that we've taken this picture here that big rig that caught fire, still sitting there on the right hand side of your screen, a number of crews and tow trucks are there on the scene. hopefully to remove this at some point in the near future. three lanes of traffic still flowing through here, but that is creating an enormous backup all throughout the bay bridge that's backing all the way up into the city of oakland. san francisco fire posting a video on x showing the trucks trailer fully involved in flames. you see the black smoke coming out of the car. this is westbound on the bridge just east of yerba buena island. once the chp and fire department were on scene, they allowed traffic to pass only in the left lane. they say the

trailer was filled with produce. the tractor detached from it after the fire started. no word of any injuries at this point, and the cause of the fire is still not yet known. but the fire department says the trailer's rear brakes may have overheated. a live look now at the bay bridge toll plaza. i'm not sure many of those cars have moved even an inch at this point here, giving you a better idea of just how much this traffic is backing up. if you have to head over to the city at some point, just be mindful. at this point, it will certainly take you well over an hour from oakland to get into san francisco. so people across the country will pause on memorial day to salute fallen military servicemen and women. the holiday was created in the aftermath of the civil war. it was originally called decoration day, but was then renamed memorial day in 1971. it is specifically set aside to remember those who have given their lives for their country. a new usaa survey reveals that fewer than half of american adults understand the meaning.
