Do you work with grandparents and other kin raising high school seniors? If so, please use and widely share this new resource from the - it has detailed directions for students raised by kin to complete the FAFSA, the federal financial aid application that opens doors to money to pay for college. As with most things, the instructions for these students are different than for students being raised by parents. The great news - in most circ*mstances, only the students' income and assets are considered in determining aid! So, it's very important to fill out the application correctly because it can help ensure bright futures for these young adults. https://lnkd.in/ggV-fZyS#KinshipCare #Grandfamilies #FAFSA

Direct cash programs with no budget requirements work (but includes supportive councelin) more often than not for homeless youth, which has a pilot program. It makes housing, finishing HS, and entering a job certification program for young people (especially those who have been in and out of foster care) with no support from families. Why waste money on programs that fail more often than succeed, when everyone who is housed and training for a job that can keep them in safe housing will produce a taxpayer.

We are thrilled to learn that the new FAFSA has made changes that make it easier for students experiencing homelessness to access financial aid support. In the past, the “determination process” (that students had to go through in order to be considered for financial aid) could be re-traumatizing for students. Students had to jump through many hoops & check off many boxes to prove their status. “Under the FAFSA Simplification Act, students will only have to go through the determination process once unless they have a change in circ*mstance or move institutions. Additionally, the act expanded the group of entities that could verify that a student was homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.”At My Private Professor, we recognize that students experiencing homelessness often struggle to receive the academic support that they need & deserve. We’re also aware of the numbers. According to the U.S. Dept. of Education, since 2008, the number of students experiencing homelessness identified by public schools each year has increased by 90%.That’s why we’ve made it a core part of our mission to help these students. For EVERY tutoring hour, we earmark a portion of funds to support students experiencing homelessness &/or in long-term foster care. If you’re interested in partnering with us to support this group of students, contact us at support@myprivateprofessor.com. We would love to work with you!#Education #GivingBack #EmpowerLearners #AcademicSuccess #StudentSuccess

We are fully aware that when people come into fostering it is not for the finances, and nor should it be. However it should not be a taboo subject. Understanding how the payments work and what they are allocated for is an important part of your research, because these payments alongside the grants are there to ensure that you can provide the child(ren) in your care with the best possible experience. "COVID Relief Funds Are an Overlooked Resource for Helping Homeless Students": From cell phones & laundry to hotel stays & car repairs, 5 districts across the U.S. are using federal money to help vulnerable kids get into and stay in the classroom. Federal lawmakers have given school districts an opportunity to address student homelessness with $800 million in American Rescue Plan-Homeless Children and Youth Funds, money that can be used for the identification, enrollment and school participation of children and youth experiencing homelessness. At the end of the day, it is the federal government's responsibility, regardless of the pandemic, to ensure our youth are provided with all the tools needed to navigate and succeed in their education.#homelessness #youth #housingcrisis #education #educationsystem #housingisahumanrighthttps://loom.ly/xCnBDXw

This National Foster Care Awareness Month, Let's Champion Education! Did you know? Only a small percentage of foster youth graduate college. While 93% aspire to attend, many face unique challenges that can make those dreams a struggle. According to the National Foster Youth Institute, studies have found that just 3-4% of former foster youth obtain a 4-year college degree, and only 2-6% receive a 2-year degree. Here's how you can make a difference:Donate to scholarship funds: Help ease the financial burden of college for foster youth.Mentor a foster student: Offer guidance and support as they navigate educational choices.Spread awareness: Share this post and raise awareness about the challenges faced by foster youth.Together, we can create a brighter future for foster students.#SupportFosterYouth #HigherEducationForAll #FosterCareAwarenessMonth

💗 Nothing more satisfying helping those who need it the most!👩🎓 Due to financial constraints, the vast majority of former foster kids who go to college never graduate. Recent studies show that 1 in 4 California kids who grew up in foster care end up homeless. Approximately 4,000 kids across the state age out of the foster care system every year.🙌 As a board member of Make It Home Bay Area (MIH),I'm proud of the significant impact our organization has on the well being of these kids as they transition out of foster homes and into college life. 💚 Plus, MIH repurposes a voluminous amount of unwanted furniture that would've gone to landfill!🛌 With college move-in days taking place across the country right now, MIH volunteers are working with students in need to ensure they arrive on campus ready to go. The Marin-based board members told the Marin Independent Journal that it is devoted to finding gently used furniture and other supplies that all new college students need for furnishing dorm rooms, apartments or other living spaces as foster kids move on to college.😍 There is a possible future where all kids interested in a college education can earn admission and get the financial support to finish. The IJ article:https://lnkd.in/g4Mc3gSQ. #greenbusiness #sustainability #nonprofit #givingback #community #marincounty #educationforall #socialmobility
