Fallout: New Vegas Walkthrough - Helping Cpl. William Farber (2024)

Helping Cpl. Farber - Spices/Food Additive

The spices are actually the easiest part. He mentions that the scientists were working on something to improve the taste of food. Keely had a project going that she was able to complete while exploring Vault 22 in “There Stands the Grass.” You can pick up a small container, merely labeled Food Additive, from one of the computers that Keely used in a small side room. It’s probably not worth going back to get it, but if you already found the food additive while you were in Vault 22, or are planning to go there soon, it’s worth keeping an eye out for it. Just hand it over to Farber to receive some experience.

Helping Cpl. Farber - Meat for Camp McCarran

If you want to help Cpl. Farber get some more meat for the kitchen, then you’ll need to travel a little bit.

There are three potential merchants you can contact to arrange for meat deliveries, although only the Crimson Caravan matters.

You can talk to Rudy Nash in Primm and Fitz at his little pit stop, if you want to get all that you can. Unfortunately, this seems to bug out fairly often. The unmarked quest won’t bring up the dialogue for them in most cases, without some serious tweaking in the console. Honestly, it really isn’t a big deal. If you don’t have any special options with them, I’d just ignore it.

The only merchant that actually matters is Blake at the Crimson Caravan compound. Go inside and find him while he’s on duty at his merchant stall. If you ask about meat deliveries, you’ll get a few options. With 50 points in Barter, you can convince him to just trade the meat for Camp McCarran’s overstocked vegetables. This is a pretty ideal outcome for Farber, as it balances his supplies back out. With 70 points in Speech, you can just convince him to cut Camp McCarran a really good deal. You can also just accept market terms, but that’s not really an ideal outcome.

The Crimson Caravan has enough supplies to cover all of Camp McCarran’s needs, so you’re actually done. Go back to Farber and report your success. He should start stocking Brahmin steaks for sale soon, which is fairly useful for anyone playing on hardcore mode.

Helping Cpl. Farber - Fixing the Camp McCarran Food Processor

Fallout: New Vegas Walkthrough - Helping Cpl. William Farber (1)

The Camp McCarran food processor is broken, and it’s really putting a damper on his cooking abilities.

If you have 80 points in Repair you should be able to just fix it with what’s there and be done in an instance.

If you don’t have the points in Repair, then you’ll need to go around and scavenge a bit. Note that a number of the items can be taken from the Camp McCarran kitchen, if you’re willing to steal. Just crouch down behind a counter and steal what you need.

For the most part, I’d suggest just keeping an eye open while you explore. I actually found H&H Tools a horrible looting location. You’re better off going to Cerulean Robotics. It has more rare equipment, weaker enemies, no traps and it’s tied in with “Wang Dang Atomic Tango.”

You can also buy a fair number of the miscellaneous items from Miguel’s Pawn Shop in Westside. They’re fairly cheap, and a number of items can be stolen from inside his store. Just look along the shelves.

Pilots lights are in most ovens. Check houses and kitchen while you loot. You just need two.

Pressure cookers are also in most kitchens, along with a normal pot.

Conductors are generally in toolboxes. Check toolboxes while you explore, buy two or check out Michael Angelo’s workshop. He should have a few lying around in his toolboxes. Sensor modules are also often in toolboxes.

Scrap metal is fairly easy to come by if you kill robots. You can also just buy some at the pawn shop or Gibson’s scrap yard.

Firehose nozzles are a bit of a pain, since they’re a little rare. You might find a few in Camp McCarran’s firehouse boxes. Check abandoned buildings for the boxes until you find two.

Steam gauge assemblies are a bit of a pain, along with the four fission batteries. Luckily, you don’t have to go far. Go outside and approach the main entrance to Camp McCarran. On the right side of the terminal building, past the dummies, is a small outdoor garage. There should be a steam gauge assembly and four fission batteries on the shelf. They also should just count as salvage, not stealing.

You can buy another steam gauge assembly from Chet in Goodsprings or at Gibson’s scrap yard.

Once you have everything that you need, use the spare parts to fix the food processor. You’ll get a discount on Farber’s food supplies and a fair bit of experience.

This post is part of the series: Fallout: New Vegas Walkthrough - Camp McCarran - Part 2

There’s a lot of quests at Camp McCarran and I’ll try to cover all of them. I’ll cover how to get Corporal Betsy to go to therapy, fix the stove, secure good food for the camp and also handle how to blow up the monorail for Caesar and interrogate or free the prisoner.
