A Garden Picnic in Singapore (2024)

One fine morning, 3 friends finally set-out to have the Pinterest Picnic that they’ve been planning for months. Life and busy schedules can get in the way and planning a picnic, much like planning a party, can be daunting. Here, Alicia, Renuka and myself show you how we put together a picturesque Garden Picnic in Singapore.

Choose a Suitable Location

Singapore is known as a garden city so there are many spots to choose from but if you’re looking for a quiet and picturesque spot, you may have to go a little out of your way and they may not be as easily accessible. My favourite spots for aesthetic garden picnics in Singapore are Singapore Botanic Gardens and Hort Park.

Weather and Time

The weather in Singapore can have a significant impact on your picnic experience, as we have a tropical rainforest climate that is generally warm and humid, with average temperatures ranging from 28°C to 38°C. Always monitor weather updates and consider rescheduling your outing if severe weather, such as thunderstorms and lightning is expected. Plan your picnic during cooler times of the day, such as early morning before 10am or late afternoon pass 5pm.

The best time to have a picnic is a weekday morning if you want to avoid the crowd as no parks are spared from crowds on weekends and holidays.

Things to Bring

Garden Picnic Food

Here are some suggestions for simple yet aesthetic food that you can purchase readily from convenient stores.

  • Strawberries
  • Wine or Champagne
  • Sparkling Water
  • Bento Cake
  • Cupcakes
  • Salad
  • Sandwiches
  • Cheese
  • French Loaf

Necessities but make it cute.

I know you may be wondering why it is a must to bring a chopping board or a cake stand? The ground you sit on may not be as flat as a table so they help to hold your drinks and food from sliding or rocking. Baking Paper helps to absorb moisture or oil from cooked food and it keeps it from touching directly onto the containers or plates which makes for easier cleaning later too.

It’s advisable to bring 2 mats1 reusable plastic mat to avoid moist ground and 1 cloth mat for comfort.

Be Environmentally-Conscious

Enjoy your picnic but be mindful of the environment. Here are some things you can do to be environmentally-conscious while you enjoy your picnic.

Try not to use plastic plates, cups and utensils.

Although it is unavoidable, I try to avoid using plastic as much as I can. Plastic utensils may be much lighter and far more convenient, but I choose not to use them because they’re just ugly. I understand we all have busy lives and you don’t have time to carry, wash and dry utensils, then I’m sorry to break it to you but, you can’t expect an aesthetically pleasing set-up. Plastic cheapens the look.

Bring your own trash bag.

Although there are bins in our parks, it may be a walking distance from your picnic spot so it’s always good to bring a few pieces of trash bags to throw your rubbish in, to pack any soiled items and to keep the area clean. Do note that leaving your trash behind will be considered littering and you will be fined which even applies to tourists.

Do not pluck any flowers or cause damages.

In case you’re a tourist, you may not know that you can get fined for plucking flowers even if its by the road here in Singapore. We are also not allowed to feed any animals you come into contact with as it may be hazardous to them. Do not enter any closed barriers as it is considered an offence and you can get fined of up to SGD$2000. There are designated pathways to walk and cycle and many big open spaces to have your picnic. Singapore is dedicated to keeping our environment clean and safe for us and for our wildlife too hence the regulations.

You can refer to the National Parks Act for more information.

We were lucky that the weather was waltzing from sunny to cloudy that morning. We spent hours sharing deep thoughts over strawberries in champagne and cake. I’ve always loved Pinterest Picnics but I was too shy to share it with anyone because setting it up can be quite a hassle and I don’t wanna be extra. So it was nice that they jumped onto the idea and decided to make this happen together.
